Steroids in the NFL (1 Viewer)

The steroid thing is what it is and I'll leave it at that. We all know what's up and its obviously not just football. Its marijuana as well.... The funny thing is you have a case like Onterrio Smith or Pretty Ricky who are pretty much out of the league for dope. Dope which doesn't enhance performance and if anything depriciates performance. Now you have guys like Romo, Shaun Rogers, MERRIMAN :( etc. who use to enhance.

The punishments should be equal but both should be more severe. Many announcers are unhappy with the amount of protection QB's receive in the rule book. Hmm I wonder why?! The BULK of the animals coming at them are roid raging. Honestly though, how tragic or dramatic of an instance needs to take place before something is truely done about this. Tagliabue got out prior to the brewing storm.

Small hijack.

I think the punishment for Steriods needs to be very severe but pentalizing the use of dope is more of an image issue for the NFL. I think if the average NFL fan knew the amount of drugs given to players so they could play they would be shocked. Brett Farve got hooked on pain killers because he was taking them to be able to play.

end hijack.

I guess I've been thinking about this a lot since suspensions are being handed out regularly now. What really got under my skin is I had a hometown classmate and college teammate in Panthers and Giants training camps for 3 combined years. Prior to his last ditch effort in NY he played for Cologne in Europe. As much of a friend for so many years and having the opportunity to be teammates again in college meant alot. The respect was lost when prior to that 1st year in Panthers camp things changed. He was working out with the team (us) in preparation but we lost him for a few wks. He came back to workouts with a couple days to go before he departed. It was ridiculous!! His neck, upper chest, traps and arms were just not him and ESPECIALLY after 2 wks.!! He would deny up and down he used no performance enhancers but we walked in on him!! He said there is no way he could do it bc the team tested twice a week!? You know our group of friends behind closed doors did not want him to make it! For him to get signed by an NFL team even making league minimum would have been a let down in the system. Us knowing he cheated his way to good money let alone the hundreds of others making even more!

I agree completely. I am baffled by the pot issue in the NFL. I don't even understand why business is able to drug test you. Wal-Mart requires a drug test. What possible justification is there for that? And I believe that the NFL is out of line suspending players for using pot. Steriods are performance enhancing. Steroids give a player an unfair competitive advantage. But you are absolutely right about the amount of drugs that teams legally give to players. Similarly, the amount of unneccessary legal drugs prescribed in this country is totally out of hand. As long as it is prescribed we are fine with it. I think there is a massive amount of hypocrisy in this.

They aren't testing for HGH so the steroid policy is really still a joke.
Technically you could say they are.
The tests they give don't detect HGH. They know it. The players know it. It may be on the 'banned substances' list...but if you can't detect it, what good is it to say it's banned?
I agree. However, the NFL is allowed to keep drug tests for upwards of 3 years and test players at a later date. This is what happen with Bill Romanoski; Romo took THG but there was no THG test during the time he played. Once a THG test was created, they tested old tests of Bill Romanowski and found him positive for THG.Although not perfect a perfect process, it works quite well considering the testers will never catch up with the developers.

It's simply a control issue. The proletariat has to be controlled. But, this is not a sociopolitical dissertation. The NFL no vested interest in taking performance enhancers completely out of the game. The players have gotter bigger, faster and stronger because of them, making the game more popular. They have a vested interest in a program to feign an interest in erradicating them from the game, but if the program was in the least bit effective, we wouldn't ever hear about positive tests. When a testing program is working, players don't try and cheat it. They're cheating it, a lot of them. How many are using blood transfusions, or synthetic testosterone to shorten their recovery times? You want to see it end? Test all 53 suited players at the end of every Sunday and every Wednesday, from one month before camp until the end of the Superbowl for all prospective campers. Expensive? Yes, but you send the message. Start here, and back off to a 30% sample each of these days. Not random, so they can cycle on and off and maybe not get caught for years or ever. Dedicate more time and money to tracking down the suppliers of the "undetectable" drugs. Stay with the game. Stop with the one strike warning, two strike 4 game suspension, three strike one year method. You want it to stop? You get caught one time with performance enhancers in your system, and you lose one season, period. You get caught again, and your career is over. It's not like this is an addiction, this is cheating.

I'll take exception to throwing Shaun Rogers into that group. He reportedly did not test positive for steroids. He probably tested positive for ephedra (same as Julius Peppers). How ephedra is on the same list as steroids is beyond me. That's like putting aspirin on the same list as cocaine. Ephedra has about the same performancing enhancing effect as a strong cup of coffee or a Red Bull. It does not deserve to be on the same list as anabolic steroids. If you get a 4 game ban for ephedra, then you should get a lifetime ban for steroids. I know that a few athletes have supposedly died from taking products containing ephedra (Korey Stringer), but in those cases there were many combined factors such as extreme heat, dehydration, heart problems, etc that resulted in death. Ephedra used to be a product that you could buy at GNC for weight loss, and pseudoephedrine is still the main ingredient in most over the counter cold/allergy meds. Shaun Rogers should have known better since it's on the banned list, but he's not Barry Bonds. You could get a positive result for this substance if you took the wrong version of Sudafed.

Excellent idea and makes perfect sense. One problem making common sense and clean up possible.....NFL players union!

I don't think the NFL Player's Union is that opposed to testing as say other Player Unions.

That's a great point. It should be a graduated scale. Ephedrine (ephedra, ma huang-same drug, different names), should be banned, and should carry a suspension, but it in no way enhances your performance the same way that steroids do. It's also a lot stronger than a cup of coffee. Think more like 2 pots of coffee, at once, without the weight/discomfort of the liquid. It's energy. The Red Bull analogy is closer, because they use Guarana, which is similar in that they're both plants. Ephedrine deaths are caused by OD's, severe OD's, but you get the energy boost from 25 mg, but tolerances go up quickly, which is why the overdoses come. I know a lot about this drug, because I am asthmatic, and it's a natural asthma drug, from the ma huang plant/herb. I was livid when it was banned, because I went from a $3.00 a month OTC drug to manage my asthma as a beta 2 antagonist, which I had to use far less frequently, to a $15/ month chemical and prescription. As for competative advantage. It helps keep you from getting winded, and recover quicker from exertion. It doesn't make you faster, or stronger. Pseudoephedrine, the lab created version that is no where near as effective, fits in the same category though. As does cocaine and amphetamines. They give energy, and a little energy advantage, but not the huge strength, speed and durability advantage that HGH and the anabolic steroids do. Same with drugs like Pot, barbituates (downers-painkillers), and other drugs that are banned, but clearly give you no competative advantage. Why does the NFL test for them? Why do they care? I guess there is a competative disadvantage argument, but I don't buy it. Don't worry about crap that doesn't matter, and focus on the crap that does!!! Why cares if Ricky Williams likes to get high and do Yoga? It doesn't give him a competative advantage. You shouldn't suspend him for lifestyle choices. Yes, it's illegal, but you didn't suspend Patrick Buchanon for soliciting prositutes the night before the Superbowl. Testing for morality, just because you can, is idiotic. Test for things that matter, and dole out punishment that is fitting. Somebody mentioned that the players union is open to stronger testing. I don't think either side is. They both like it the way it is. They players get to continue using, the owners get to pretend they have a policy attempting to control it. Both have the best of both worlds. The shroud of secrecy of the program is also a problem for me. How many tests do players fail, and win on appeal, never get suspended, that we never hear about? Remember, we only hear about the test, after the appeal is lost, at the point of suspension, and after the player has already failed one random test, and been place in the 'testing program'. The 4 game is for a second failed test. A second hard confirmed failed test.

I personally think the NFL should not ban ephedra, but current policy was really driven by politics and the deaths of a couple high profile athletes. 25-50mg of ephedra combined with an Excedrin is the perfect combo to briefly kick off fatigue and overcome allergies and asthema. It can also help with weight loss if used responsibly. But it won't turn an athlete into Superman like steroids do.But as you said, it's easy for some of these guys to build up a tolerance and OD (thinking that more is always better). Plus if you have heart problems, you should not take ephedra. But you probably shouldn't be playing sports either.
