Panthers WR Smith misses second straight practice

November 15, 2007

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith missed his second straight practice Thursday with a shin injury.

The team provided no further details on the seriousness of the injury. Smith also sat out practice Wednesday.

The injury to Carolina's top receiver comes as the Panthers are finally getting healthier at quarterback. Vinny Testaverde and David Carr both practiced for a second straight day. Coach John Fox gave no indication who would start Sunday at Green Bay.

Starting safety Deke Cooper also returned to practice after sitting out Wednesday's workout with a shoulder injury. Running back DeShaun Foster was back on the field after missing a day with a sore toe.

Defensive tackle Damione Lewis (shoulder) missed his second straight practice.

If you're a Smith owner who's been forced to start him you probably hope he doesn't play so you can at least find someone with some upside.

According to fanball (or whoever does their news updates):

Steve Smith did not practice on Wednesday due to a leg injury, according to the Charlotte Observer. However, he is expected to play on Sunday against the Packers.

scarlett...........Well said. Have him in one league.... got him and Owens.... with Gore... thought I'd run away with the title... meanwhile Cotchery, Bowe, et al have proved more than serviceable... and Stevonne keeps putting up 3's n 4s every week.

I wish I had your depth. My WRs are Smith, Walker, Harrison and Branch. I've had no choice but to start Smith the past several weeks. Even in a PPR league he's been killing me outside of his one big game against Arizona.

I'm benching him for the first time this week so he's sure to blow up.
Don't see that happening against Harris and Woodson. If Carr starts there's a better chance of me nailing the girl in my avatar then there is of Smith blowing up.

I cannot believe how bad David Carr is. Last game I watched, he couldn't get one pass beyond the DL's hands. I wanted to kick my TV.....yes I own Steve Smith too.

Geez, dude. That's like winning the lottery....and dying before you get the money.
 I'm still in contention for my league title too if you can believe it. Of course, losing Peterson isn't going to help any. But yea, on paper my team looks damn good. The one title I've won in my league already is the best-looking bench. Nobody can touch what's on my bench every week.

He'll be on my bench for the first time this week as well. I just traded for AJohnson who I'll start with Holt. Smith has been a bid disappointment this season.

For those interested, here is what No. 1 WRs have done against Green Bay so far this season:

Week 1: Reggie Brown 1-14-0

Week 2: Plaxico Burress 2-32-1

Week 3: Vincent Jackson 6-98-1

Week 4: Vikings don't have a No. 1 WR

Week 5: Bernard Berrian 1-10-0 (he got hurt and didn't play much in the second half).

Week 6: Santana Moss 0-0-0

Week 8: Brandon Marshall 3-74-0

Week 9: Dwayne Bowe 0-0-0 (got hurt and barely played; no WR caught more than 2 passes)

Week 10: Vikings don't have a No. 1 WR

Only 2 TDs allowed and only one strong yardage game (by Jackson in Week 3). Packers don't give up much to No. 1 WRs.

Thanks for the workup on that Packersfan. The only WR there that can even be considered anywhere near Smith level would be Burress. I am pretty confident that Smith can get behind Harris, and probably Woodson too. Having said that, if Carr starts Smith is completely unstartable.
