Steve Smith, NY (1 Viewer)

With Toomer still recovering from surgery and Burress ailing, what are the chances of the rookie Steve Smith WR makes an impact? It seems that the opportunity is open for him to make a major impact. He my not be as huge as Boldin or Colston, or maybe he will. Any thoughts?

I think he is a nice sleeper for redrafts if taken at the very very end of a draft. Has a decent change to make some impact this year, but that will be minimized so long as Toomer can get out there and play.

I do like his dynasty prospects for a solid #2 fantasy WR as soon as his second year. Don't think he has superstar stats in him, but if Eli comes around that offense could put up good passing numbers for a while.

ive taken him at the end of a few redrafts this year. I like him as the 3rd best rookie wr this year behind CJ, and Gonzalez(as far as 07 impact goes)

Few rook WRs (if any) have had as many reps with the first unit as him. The Giants love the guy. There's no negative reports on him, like him making rookie mistakes that I've seen. I expect Plax and Amani to heal up and be OK when the season starts but each of them could use a good amount of subs in a ball game in order to stay healthy. Right now, now, I feel like he has the best opportunity of any rook WR.

There are a few that should start and thus have a better opportunity by week 1.

I'd be surprised but not shocked if Gilbride/Coughlin started him over either Plax or Amani in week 1 or 2. They have all this experience and production and all but yet they'd be benching the WR that did best in camp and in the spring. I think there's a hint of a chance that he could be a starter in week 1 or 2.

There is no chance he starts unless there's an injury to Plax or Amani. He is competing with Moss for the third WR spot.
I think Smith is a lock for the #3 WR, and by next year, he should be starting. If Burress or Toomer get hurt, I fully expect Smith to start. I see Moss as nothing more than a slot WR.

I agree with AB here. This kid had some of the best statsof all DIV 1 WRs against ranked opponents.I expect a bright future for SSmith. :P

Rather than having an outright #3 my sense is the Giants will use both of these guys (if healthy) in that role depending on the play call and situation. Obviously they want to get the ball in Moss's hands on screens and reverses, and use him to stretch the field. Smith I think will be used a lot for intermediate and possession type stuff, especially on third down. While you may not see Sinorice as anything more than a slot guy, that's not what the Giants spent a two on. They think he can be more than that. (He has the same skill set as his brother after all). Essentially he's still a rookie and has a long way to go - first off he needs to prove he can stay healthy - but it's way too early to write him off.

The Giants BLEW that 2nd on Moss and they know it. IMHO, Smith is the real deal.

Big fan of him...he's making plays every day in practice and should be a starter in NY by '08 at the latest.

I blogged about him a few weeks ago and, if anything, am more enthusiastic about his chances now than I was when I wrote the blarticle. Burress continues to sit out of camp and now Michael Jennings is lost for the season. Smith is going to see plenty of targets as either WR3 or, quite possibly a starter if injuries present themselves.

Steve Smith's skill set is far more toward a very good #2 than a slot receiver. With the direction of smaller (but not Moss small) WRs who can run great routes and have good-very good speed and great hands, Smith could be seen as having the chance to be a #1 WR... after all, Marvin Harrision, the "original" Steve Smith and the like are not big/tall and while fast they arent track stars either... but you don't see them being caught from behind either. I could see the "wishful thinking" upside with Smith in that light, though my expecations are certainly tempered in that regard.

I think Steve Smith is possibly the most polished WR in this draft class. The guy looks like an opening day rookie starter IMO. That said, if Toomer is healthy he will retain his starting spot. Burress will not be benched. I see the situation as Toomer fighting to retain his roster spot all season, but not holding out very long with Smith at his heels. I love Steve Smith in dynasty leauges, but I do think there are better late round rookie picks in redrafts.

Guys that probably will start at WR on opening day: Craig Davis + Jacoby Jones
