From RotoWorld:

Coach John Fox announced that WR Steve Smith has been suspended for the first two games of the season.

Coach John Fox just announced that wide receiver Steve Smith has been suspended for the first two games of the season for punching cornerback Ken Lucas on the sidelines during Friday's training camp practice in Spartanburg.

Fox, speaking after the Fan Fest scrimmage at Bank of America Stadium, said Smith's actions would not be tolerated and that Smith has been given conditions for the future regarding such behavior.

Fox said Lucas suffered a broken nose.

More details to come

Good way to add value to Mush & Hackett early. See who develops a nice rythm then throw Steve Smith back in the mix week 3.

Don't lock this thread. News like this is worthy of its own thread.TIA
According to Joe's response last night, this one should be locked as well. It's a duplicate. We'll see what happens ... :popcorn:But in an attempt at productivity, how far down does this push Steve Smith? He's gotta be late 3rd now?

Coach Fox best be wearing headgear and mouthguard when he tells Smith he's out for two games... if he knows whats good for him.

I'm going to drop Delhomme in my rankings just a hair. Which is really perfect when you think about it. He was a big time sleeper who was getting too much value talk around here and I didn't want to have to take him earlier than I wanted. Maybe this news scares enough off to let him fall

Is Smith going to play the preseason or his he away from the team until after week 2?

Missing the first two games you could discount him 12-17 percent and just move on, but if he also misses the rest of camp and the preseason games his numbers could go down even more.

Fox, speaking after the team's Fan Fest scrimmage Saturday at Bank of America Stadium, said Smith will be able to practice and play in the preseason, then will prohibited to be around the team for two weeks starting Sept. 2, the Monday before the first game.

Panthers.com is mum but Gantt said this

WR Steve Smith was suspended for the first two regular season games for punching CB Ken Lucas.

The decision was swift and sure, announced by head coach John Fox Saturday afternoon. He'll miss games against San Diego and Chicago, but will be back in training camp and will play in the preseason.

"What he did was wrong and we take it seriously," Panthers coach John Fox said. "We're trying to do what's fair."

Fox also called Smith's punch "inexcusable."

Lucas was left with a broken nose, and there's no timetable on his return.

My team with Smith and Brandon Marshall is in great shape.

I understand that missing games is the point, but it seems like odd punishment that he gets to continue normal routines with the team for the next 30 days, then has to go away for two weeks.Seems like they could suspend him from team activities now for the next 2 weeks, then make him inactive for the first 2 games but still around the team. Then at least some of the punishment comes now, right after the incident. Or would missing the next couple of weeks not be considered punishment...?

Jon Fox is about to get a can of whoopass opened on him.
John Fox should be fired for this
Steve Smith may be my favorite player in the NFL. Nonetheless, as a homer I am glad to see this suspension. Among other things, his past violence and the broken nose aspect adds to the justification of a suspension. I am a bit surprised to see 2 games instead of 1 but that's fine.

Steve Smith hates training camp and preseason games, so making him do both is punishment. What he loves is playing when it counts, and he can't for the first 2 games of the season.

If it was that easy to get out of camp without losing two week's game pay, then we'd see a hell of alot more fighting on the first day of camp.

I didn't mean he wouldn't lose 2 game checks, although I guess I see that being inactive doesn't mean you aren't paid. I guess the only way to make him lose the money is to do it how they are doing it. The whole stay with the team for the 30 days following the incident, then go away for 2 weeks timeline still seems strange to me.

He got 1 game the LAST time he did something like this. It would make no sense IMO to only give him 1 game for doing it again.

The suspension is expected to cost Smith $205,882, the pro-rated portion of his $1.75 million annual salary covering two games
wait he's only making 1.75 million for the year? that seems low
Don't get caught up in that. I'm sure that's just his base salary which is the part that counts against the salary cap. I'm sure SS like most other top tier players in the NFL has alot of easily reached incentives in his contract that allows the team to pay him his money without it being counted against the cap.

Typically, a "second offense" warrants greater punishment.

GLAD to see this thug get some punishment. The fact they only suspended Steve Smith says who they think was at fault for this altercation. Steve Smith is a coward that only sucker punches guys to gain an overwhelming early advantage and then waits for teammates to break up the fight never giving the other guy a chance to defend himself and retaliate.

Well, look at it this way.

This suspension should cause his stats to resemble his games with David Carr at QB. At least it's only 2 games and not the majority of the season like last year....

Apparently Fox forgot he's coaching in the NFL. Just wait till Gene Upshaw get hold of his sorry ###. This sucks though because I got the impression a lot of people were going to once again overpay for the annually overrated Smith. #$@!

Steve Smith apparently interned at Morgan Stanley this summer. Surprised he didn't tee off on a Junior VP after being told to fetch some Starbucks.
