Stewart Bradley Torn ACL per Howard Eskin (1 Viewer)

Be careful before investing too much in Mays. Certainly worth a flyer, but there's no guarantee he plays on passing downs.

He may win the job, but from this thread the question I'm hearing is, will he be fantasy worthy if he's not an every down LB.

Jordan's value will be better with Gaither inside than Mays. Gaither never proved he could shed blocks and play sideline-to-sideline. Regardless of who ends up playing on base downs, the biggest bump in production may go to Quintin Mikell.

Not sure I'm on board with that blog report, though. I'd turn his argument back on him. Why would they choose the veteran who couldn't hack it at MLB or WLB in the base defense over the young guy with better on-field Mike skills.

I just picked up Mays this morning in my league and am feeling confident about it:

2:59 PM - Joe Mays lines up as the middle linebacker when the No. 1 defense takes the field in drills.

And the initial second team snaps had Gaither at OLB, not MLB. Still early, but looking pretty definitive that Mays will have every chance to hold the job.

Brian Seltzer confirming on Twitter that Gaither has taken Bradley's spot in the first team nickel package.

Why would you go anywhere other than FBG for your IDP information, folks? :lmao:

So biggest upside for this year... Gaither or Mays?
Not a clear-cut case, but I'd argue 60% of Mays in the base defense is better than 40% of Gaither in the nickel. I don't think Gaither's slim chance of ending up in the base defense is enough to take the "upside" risk with him. This is going to be very similar to the Andra Davis/Leon Williams platoon in Cleveland if today's practice alignment holds through opening weekend.

Eagles sign Wilhelm... thought they might bring someone in.

Eagles | Agree to one-year deal with Wilhelm Mon Aug 3, 11:26 PM

Kevin Acee, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent LB Matt Wilhelm (Chargers). Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Matt Wilhelm, released by the Chargers prior to camp, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles needed Wilhelm after starter Stewart Bradley tore his ACL.

If Akeem Jordan, Wilhelm and Mays are all available, who are you targeting here? (In a 1:3 tackle to big play league)

Wilhelm working with the twos at MLB today. No surprise there, but he'll have to be pretty impressive to show he's a better base defensive thumper than Mays and/or a better coverage player than Gaither. Still think he's just a depth signing.

Moving Jordon breaks two positions and he goes what 230? I don't see it.

I say its between Mays and Wilhelm. Mays is probably the better run stuffer, Wilhelm has the NFL experience, yeah, he comes from a 3-4, but played mike in 4-3 at Ohio State. I think experience may win out in the end. Doubt either will be a three down player. You may see Sean Jones playing a LB role in nickel.

 Jordan will stay at Will and Gocong at Sam. Its between Gaither and Mays inside. Wilhelm is depth IMO or he wouldn't have been cut by SD. Gaither already showed he's a so-so MLB. Hopefully we see what Mays brings. I think Jordan wins the 3 down role with Gocong hence he will benefit the most

I think you may have misread my Jordan comment.

The Jones part is interesting though.

I did... my bad Zoom.

This is pretty much how I see it playing out as well.

Any updates for this thread after the first game?

How does Joe Mays look in preseason game action?
From Jene Bramel in the training camp thread:
There's a note in one of the Philly newspapers that suggests Gaither was replacing Mays in the nickel. At least in the first three series as I'm watching, Gaither replaced Mays on only two of six or seven nickel snaps. I don't think this is the way the team will line up, especially given the way they've practiced all week, but it's not as cut-and-dried as the paper made it out to be. My guess is that the Eagles wanted to get Mays plenty of playing time and, knowing they'd be facing a lot of spread sets, decided to leave him in there this week.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out next week vs IND and Week 3 vs JAC.

As far as in run support, Mays didn't stand out either way. He played downhill on the few more traditional sets the Pats used on offense. He certainly didn't seem to play poorly enough to get bumped down the depth chart.

On the Patriot side of the ball, the defense spent a lot of time in a four man front against Philadelphia. The Eagles ran their share of spread sets, too, but there's been speculation that injuries and the defensive line talent might push the team to some more 4-3. Richard Seymour was playing end in the 4-3 with Mayo in the middle. If the Patriots use more 4-3 than usual and Seymour stays at RE, he (Seymour) has some interesting upside.

From Eyes of the GuruJoe Mays got the call at MLB for the Eagles and remained on the field in the nickel package most of the time. I saw him in coverage some and he looked OK.

I have a trade offer for Bradley and was wondering what history/success rate LBs have with this type of injury when coming back. How have other players come back from this type of injury?

I don't think it'll be an issue. Recovery times are still well within a year, although there's still some indication that players take a full year to get playing strength and positional-spatial sense back.Chad Greenway comes to mind as just one player who returned to form after an ACL injury.

Thanks Jene. Tough call I have here. Bradley showed good signs last year of performing well but he wasn't a LB1. He could be replaced. I'm still on the fence and looking to be pushed one direction or the other. Hard enough to predict what will happen this year, let alone next year if he comes back.

If Mays couldn't get the nod over Gaither then it seems as though Bradley has his job waiting for him if he's able go rehab from this surgery sufficiently. Who'd you get offered in the trade anyway?

I was offered Vince Young. But before you think I am nuts, the scoring in our league is very different from the norm for QBs. During Young's 1st 2 seasons, he was #2 (behind Vick) and #10 in limited playing time due to injuries. When healthy, his worst games are usually average to other QBs, but his stellar games are way above anyone else. Our league places a premium on running QBs. SO even though Collins is the starter, Young is only 26 and could eventually start due to injury or whatever. If Bradley will probably never pass the LB2 range, the gamble on Young could be worth it. In the 5 years of our Dynasty League, the only QB that has come close to Young and Vick would maybe be Tyler Thigpen in the 2nd half last season. At least if my memory serves me correct. Having Young when starting gives me a minimum 10 point advantage over the opponent, typically.

After all that, I didn't want to make this an AC question. More concerned about Bradley's future next season and then I'll make my own choice. I was really hoping for more bleak news or history on ACL tears so I could pull the trigger.

You gotta be kidding me! My leagues don't place any abnormal premium on running qbs and Id take that trade if Bradley was healthy in dynasty. But it's a no brainer now. I'm pretty deep at lb though (willis, d.williams, lauranitis, d.harris, b.scott, merrimann, a.jordan, burnett, pierce, e.simms, diles). But my leagues are very deep (55-60 man rosters). If your league isn't that deep then u should be able to replace Bradley for sure. Good qb depth is hard to come by (unless you only start 1).

Its a 16 team dynasty. Very deep. As crazy as you might think the scoring system, it works out very well, and keeps all 16 teams competitive year in and year out. I'll probably pull the trigger on the trade.
