Sticker on QB Helmets? (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I've seen 2 preseason games now and all the QB's have green stickers on the backs of their helmets. What gives?

I wondered the same thing. It's like a red jersey, but only a green sticker. Maybe it has something to do with the helmet having radio capabilities to the coaches??!?!

Im thinking an impact monitor. With all the concussion talk it could be.

Ill throw out a wild guess and say its just for designation of the QB helmets with electronics...

probably testing something new and/or different with the make up of it and want to be able to see them from afar.

I googled and this is from a PFT post:
GREEN DOT HELPS REF TRACK WHO HAS AUDIOOne of the new things we noticed during last night's Hall of Fame game was that each of the quarterbacks had affixed to the backs of their helmets a small green dot.NFL spokesman Greg Aiello tells us that the sticker is a new device being used to help officials confirm that only one player on offense is wearing a helmet with a radio receiver from the coaching staff.

So, if a team plans to put two quarterbacks on the field at the same time, one of them must change helmets before entering the game.

I heard that the Refs check all helmets and put the stickers on them before the game. That way only 1 stickered helmet can be on the field at a time.

If a QB plays WR he has to change helmets if another is on the field.

They did it so that there can't ever be more than one player with the speakers in his helmet on the field at one time. So, no more Kordell "Slash" Stewart's playing wideout and not huddling with the others anymore.

Equating a sticker to a device just seems wrong....

Is this really that big of an issue that the NFL had to address it?

at least the NFL isnt letting Verizon sponsor this...i mean i could see it now the "can you hear me now" guy following the QB all over the place

They're testing all variables because they are considering letting 1 defensive player have audio. They need a way to control that, and using the current system to test that control is the easiest way to go about it.

I agree why not an NFL logo sticker so that it dosen't stand out so much? Nobody else will have a sticker on the back of their helmet, so why does it have to be puke green.

and is it really an advantage to have 1 extra guy on a team having the play broadcast in his helmet?

I could see if the whole team had it, and they could run the hurry up offense....but come on.

Well what's the difference anyway? If one guy has a radio, why not all of them? Back when they put the radio in the QB's helmets they were supposedly going to put them in the WR's helmets too so they could hear the snap count over the crowd noise.

I say get rid of all audio and let them play like they used to, and no more listening to the coach. Make the QBs learn how to call plays themselves, or use signals. I've never liked that.

And why can't the MLB or whatever defensive guy calls the defensive calls have one as well?

I'm with Anthony on this one, however, let them go the old way. Besides...it's not like 7 new players don't come in on every play anyway.

Apparently some of the teams that have QB's as holders were being a little sneaky and using the audio to call last second fake FG's if they saw something from the other team.

How would this impact that? They could still have the holder with audio as long as he was the only one, right? And doesn't the audio shut off automatically with like 10 seconds left on the play clock?

No audio helmets on special teams. QB's are supposed to switch. Also FG teams do not huddle, so you could look at how the other team lined up on you and still make the call in time.

are these super-stickers that are impossible to peel off or something? also, couldn't they still have a helmet or helmets that had the audio but was 'hidden' from the refs? i't doesn't seem worth it to cheat in such a way though. this rule is probably an effective deterrent and i'm sure they used the neon green to increase the chances of the refs noticing more of them than should be on the field.

This is the premier league in the world, and the best they can do is a green sticker? Green stickers belong on 2nd grade math tests that wind up on the fridge. However the sticker idea is not nearly as bad as the K balls being numbered with magic markers by hand. What is all that stuff printed on them for, why not just write everything in marker? Who is writing this stuff on the K balls, I thought they banned TO's sharpie. It just doesn't look very professional, maybe the NFL needs to charge more for preseason games so they can afford upgrades.
