Jacksonville's Marcus Stroud will be taking a visit to Buffalo, which could lead to a trade between the two teams for the defensive tackle's services.

The Jaguars have given Stroud permission to shop himself in a trade. Stroud's lofty salary (a team-high $6.3 million in 2008) and struggles to stay on the field have landed him on the trading block. Stroud has missed 12 games the past two seasons because of injuries and a steroid suspension.

Bills cut Tripplett

Bills Release DT Tripplett

Less than two years after signing defensive tackle Larry Tripplett to a five-year deal, the Bills parted ways with the veteran Friday. Tripplett never provided quite the impact Buffalo had hoped for. More to follow.
Making room for Stroud?

Buffalo's Interest Cools in Stroud

As for Tripplett’s replacement, don’t count on it being Jacksonville’s Marcus Stroud, who has three years left on his contract, and has the Jaguars’ permission to seek a trade.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection cut short his visit with the Bills in Buffalo on Friday after the team’s interest cooled upon learning Stroud was seeking a significant raise, a person familiar with the player’s visit told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity, because of the sensitive nature of the player’s visit, which was not confirmed by the Bills.

Stroud, scheduled to make $16.5 million over the three years remaining on his contract, is seeking to restructure his contract after the New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Kris Jenkins in a trade with Carolina earlier in the day. The Jets then came to terms with Jenkins, also a three-time Pro Bowl selection, on a new five-year contract worth $35 million, including $20 million in guaranteed money.

“I think negotiations are going to break down,” the person said.
Why the #### did they let Tripplett go if the Stroud deal was not locked up????? Who else is out there now. Un-#######-believable.ETA: The Buffalo News reported that Tripplett's release was also tied to a $1,000,000 roster bonus due as early as today. Funny though, because the $1,000,000 they saved in cutting Tripplett may be offset (and more) by the extra $1,000,000+ they have to pay Stroud after losing all of their leverage.

Trade up with Baltimore if/when Ellis falls. The man will be a stud for our defense.

We can give them thier 3rd rounder back.

I don't really understand it either. What made the Bills think that Stroud wasn't going to want a salary increase? I don't necessarily blame them for balking at throwing a bunch of money at a guy with an injury history and two drug related strikes against him, but did they seriously believe that he wouldn't want more money? Letting go of Tripplett doesn't necessarily bother me that much because it seems like he wasn't in the plans anyway at a $6M cost. My guess is that they were trying to get him to redo his deal for less money and then were forced to cut him before that bonus kicked in. But Tripplett definitely wasn't worth $6M.

It's definitely been frustrating to watch all of these DTs get traded though and the Bills just end up thinner at the position. Especially frustrating to watch a team like the Browns add TWO DTs via trade. That team has been throwing some serious money out there the last 3 years.

No. Let me look for the article. I think I read it in the Sporting News a couple weeks/months ago. I will check. The person said something along the lines that it is doubtful he will ever play at his pre injury level, and he thought he couldn't play a full schedule again. I don't want to start crazy rumors, so let me dig for the article.

Evidently its a done deal. Stroud to the Bills for a 3rd and 5th

I like the trade for both team, though I wish the Bills would have forked over a bit more compensation. Still, Stroud is turning thirty, and while he still has flashes of dominance, the injuries have limited his play in the past year or so. He'll be solid as a run stopper for the bills, which is what they desperately need, and the jags can drop his 5 million, 5.5 million and 6 million salary for the next three years. Stroud also wanted out of Jacksonville, but he will be missed here. I think we have his replacement, or a platoon of replacements, in house.

Though I wish the Bills would have forked over their 2nd round pick, as initially reported. Still, I'm happy that the Bills pick so high in the third. The overall compensation may very well be worth a late 2nd.

There is no question Stroud will help the Bills' defense, but I actually think that the 5th round pick should not have been necessary to get the deal done. At his age and with his injury history, I'd be surprised if they get more than two good seasons out of him.I ultimately agree with you though - a win-win for both teams.

Should be good news for Posluszny. I haven't heard anything about his rehab, but I can't imagine his forearm is going to inhibit him in '08.

While you may be right, I thought the release of Triplett gave the Jaguars much better leverage in their demands. I really thought they would hold out for a 2nd because the bills were in such a tight spot. :lmao:

What tight spot would that be? They have tons on money to spend.

No better alternative?

There was discussion that Poz's arm was actually healed enough to play before the season ended, except that they had already put him on IR. If so, he should be more than ready to go in '08.
