Super Troopers 2 is officially a go thanks to the over $2 million in donations the films Indiegogo page has received just one day into its campaign.

The Broken Lizard comedy group launched the page on Tuesday in the hopes of raising the $2 million needed to produce a barebones sequel to their 2001 cult classic.

The films Indiegogo page stated that, while the studio has given us permission to make the sequel, and agreed to distribute it (at least in the USA and Canada), we need to fund the movie ourselves.

The team said if they raised at least $2 million in the next month, then filming on the sequel could begin this summer. But raising more would be better for what they have planned.

Weve got some big stuff in the script, and if were able to raise enough money, youll get to see all of it. The more we raise, the more amazing stuff we can put in the movie, the page reads.

The film currently has $2,016,658 in funds raised, and the numbers are still climbing. The campaign still has 30 days to go and several of the perks are still up for grabs, including the chance to have the gang as the best men at your wedding for a $25,000 donation.

These guys are successful filmmakers.

Why did they need crowdfunding?
The campaign came about because, according to Jay Chandrasekhar, since we refused to write a sequel where the highway cops have morphed into super hero-vampires, Fox Searchlight proposed the following deal: theyll release the film, but we have to raise all of the money. It only took them a day.

In just over 24 hours, comedy group Broken Lizard raised the $2 million it needed to hit the gas on Super Troopers 2.

With its Indiegogo campaign just launched on Tuesday morning, Broken Lizard is assured to make at least a bare bones version of the film, according to the filmmakers. With 31 bonus days of fundraising still to go, they could put a lot of meat on those bones.

When Veronica Mars launched its Kickstarter campaign in 2013 the goal was also $2 million for a green light. The film hit that number in a matter of hours, on the way to a final total of $5.7 million.

because movie studios are afraid to make movies that don't have a budget of 100 million+ or are a sequel to a movie that was a hit on DVD. The DVD market is dead. Now there is streaming, VoD, etc. and movie studios are very slow to realize the possibilities.

Arguably the most re-watchable comedy movie of all time... glad they're going ahead with a sequel. One of those films you can go in with no expectations, but confident the cast will pull off a laugher.

I do find it impossible to believe FOX Searchlight wouldn't scrape together $2MM to fund a cult hit like this... This thing will do that number in it's sleep. Feels more like a publicity play, which I'm fine with.

Why should FOX Searchlight or Broken Lizard pay the 2 million when crowdsourcing will?

I'm wondering why any studio would. Even if they need to kick in money on top to get the full budget, why not burn through a few million first that requires no return on investment and gives them a larger share of profits?

Crowdsourcing is on fire right now. Think of an idea, get people to throw you money to make it, then throw you money to see/use it.

FOX is getting paid twice for this movie, not once.

It will not be retroactive, so you still don't get producer credit or future earnings from ST2
Crowdsourcing is going to be the way these small movies get filmed in the future, and legislation is being pushed through that would give everyone who contributes a small share of the movie based on what they invest. That will be kind of like a mini-stock market.

I was wondering if something like this existed already, or could be formed. I don't know entirely how all of this works - is the $2MM just for production, and then it's eventually sold to a distributor who shoulders the cost of marketing etc? And presumably this only pays the actors scale but they can negotiate back end points separately?

In this case the money is for the costs of filming and editing only. Distribution and marketing would be Fox Searchlight's money.

Maybe the quote I pull out the most from any movie in conversation that nobody ever gets:

"That little guy? I wouldn't worry about that little guy"

I watched it over the weekend and wasnt disappointed. I had lower expectations with it being a sequel, however I really enjoyed it. Plenty of new gags mixed in with some of the classics. Worth a watch for sure.
