Takeo Spikes torn rotator cuff -- to IR (1 Viewer)

The early money is probably on Spikes playing through the injury, although the Vikings win last night eliminated the Eagles from the playoffs and makes it easier to shut it down.

It appears that Stewart Bradley will play MLB and Omar Gaither move back out to WLB. That's interesting for any number of reasons. Bradley, presumably a SLB candidate, has apparently gotten snaps inside. With Chris Gocong more likely to be on this team in future seasons than Spikes, that's potentially a huge development for you dynasty owners.

Takeo Spikes had an impressive game Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, and it became even more impressive yesterday when Eagles coach Andy Reid revealed that his linebacker had a torn rotator cuff.

Reid said he was not sure when Spikes suffered the shoulder injury; it was not announced after the game. The veteran linebacker was seen with an ice pack wrapped around his left shoulder in the visiting locker room after the Eagles' 10-6 upset victory at Texas Stadium. The tear was revealed during an MRI examination yesterday morning.

"I think he played with it for a bit," Reid said.

He did not rule out the possibility that Spikes would continue to play with the injury when the Eagles face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Superdome. That decision could be easier now that the Eagles have been eliminated from the playoffs.

"We'll see how he's able to handle that," Reid said, adding that players have continued to play with the injury in the past.

Spikes finished the game with five tackles, including one for a 4-yard loss that put the Cowboys in a second-and-14 situation right before cornerback Lito Sheppard intercepted a Tony Romo pass, a turnover that led to the Eagles' only touchdown. Spikes also knocked down two passes.

If Spikes cannot play Sunday, Reid said the Eagles would likely move rookie Stewart Bradley to middle linebacker and slide Omar Gaither from the middle to Spikes' weak-side spot. He did not rule out, however, that rookie Akeem Jordan could move into the weak-side spot, with Gaither remaining in the middle.

Spikes was placed on injured reserve today.

No new information on how the Eagles will line up at linebacker this week.

Rookie Akeem Jordan will be the Eagles' starting weak-side linebacker in the team's final two games.

Fellow rookie Stewart Bradley will also see increased snaps on nickel downs. An undrafted player, Jordan is very undersized at 6-1/225. The Eagles could have problems defending the run against New Orleans and Buffalo.

Wasn't Bradley to be the SLB.

Head coach Andy Reid said on Wednesday that linebacker Takeo Spikes will have season-ending surgery on the rotator cuff that he tore Sunday against Dallas.

Reid said that the Eagles are in the process of placing Spikes on the injured reserve list. The surgery is tentatively scheduled for Friday and it will be done by Dr. James Andrews. Reid indicated that even if the Eagles were still in the playoff hunt, they would have made the decision to place Spikes on IR.

Reid will rotate two rookies, Stewart Bradley and Akeem Jordan, into the linebacker rotation. Bradley will work in as the nickel linebacker and Jordan will start on the weak side in the base formations.

He was but since Gocong has worked out fairly well, I think the long-term plan is too make him a MLB (he has had some time there) and move Gaither to WLB. But then again, they seem to like making Gaither play MLB when he is a WLB.Jordan is small and a ST player, not a long-term solution anywhere IMO.

Personally I would have assumed the Bradley gets the start not Jordan. I'll be interested in which one actually gets more PT.

I am getting the feeling that Spikes is done as an Eagle
fixed
I'm not sure how bad Spikes injury was, but he was playing pretty good football for the Eagles. Done for fantasy, not so sure if he's really done or not.As for Bradley, he was a beast out there (looked like he was playing the middle for the last half or so). Ended up with with 5Ts, 1A, 1 sack, and an INT, and almost single-handedly made the goal line stand late in the game against the Saints.

Should be interesting to see if he gets the start at Mike and if Gaither gets moved to the WILL next week. But Bradley looks like a player (I know, it was only 1 game).
