Taking the Zero (1 Viewer)

You guys ever heard of DRAFT DOMINATOR :banned: from FBG? It helps avoid these kind of issues while still maintaining a consistently strong team throughout the season.
:boxing: Used it, considered it, and still dealing with the issue, due to roster churn, injury, and Trades. New Strategy: draft best team possible and ignore bye unless extreme.

(Thumbs down on the comment, not on DD itself which is a must-have for an in-person draft)
I used DD and all my WRs and TEs (well 1 TE) are on BYEs including the bench except for TJ Housh... I'm taking the loss but I am done with bye weeks...

Our league put in a rule that charges you $10/player for starting someone on a bye or a definite out for the week due to injury. That's equal to two add/drops. The thought being that in our 12-team (start 1/2/3/1/1/1) leauge that since the WW is picked clean this would put someone back out there. If you would prefer not to, that is your right, but we get some additional $$$$ for the payouts. So the question becomes do you want to risk the loss and $10? Or would you rather give up a #6 RB or #2 TE? Well, that's my :goodposting:
we do the same except its 5 bucks which is the same as a transaction, 20 bucks has been brought it so far, half with stupidity and half by choice.

Our $300 per person league allows you to start a player who is on bye or injured...but with financial risk.

If you win the game, no problem...but if you lose the game, you owe twenty bucks for every non-viable player.

We usually collect and $160 per year this way.

In deep leagues, sometimes you have no choice ... there is not a starting player on waivers.

Moreover, in at least one league I play in there is a high likelihood of negative points from a player like a QB who produces a lot of incompletions/turnovers. Zero is better than minus for a really bad QB ...

There should be zero penalty for starting a bye week player IMHO.

Is intentionally taking a zero akin to "taking a dive"? Is it poor sportsmanship? I'm up against the other [5-0] team in my league, so it's not like it's an attractive risk to handicap myself by 13-20 points.
As long as its not breaking a rule I see nothing wrong with it. You're managing your team as you think is best for the long haul, which is the goal.
Agree, so long as it's clear you don't want to drop anyone and sacrifice the win.... other owners in that divison (esp if you are playing cross-division) will hate the freebie you are handing him.I've seen guys "scratch" a position and still win... but QB... wow.

I'm doing the same thing in one league with ALL of my RBs on bye. Although i didn't really do it intentionally, I've heard it referred to as 'stacking byes,' basically getting as many players with the same bye week as possible and essentially throwing that game to maintain a consistently strong team throughout the rest of the season.

I'm not picking a player just because I wont have bye week issues. I'd rather have the better player the rest of the season.

I will have to take a zero this week if both Boldin and Rudi are out (a flex spot)

Unless I want to cut Henry, Young or Brandon Marshall and pick up a scrub that may get me 6 pts at best. Then I lose a lot in the long run.

Have done it a few times. I generally won't cut a valuable player just so I can pick up some scrub to fill out my starting lineup. I'd rather take my chances taking the 0.

Original Poster checking back in...

Thanks for some great discussion. In the end, you guys collectively convinced me that taking a zero at the QB position is nuts. I needed to take off the rose-colored glasses and find someone on my roster that could be dropped. I decided to waive my backup PK, even if he is top 5 and I was planning to use him to cover my PK1's bye in a couple of weeks.

I just plucked Cleo Lemon off the waiver wire, and will roll dice with him today at Cleveland.

:hot:

4/1 at the half, looks like a pretty good decision...
