Favre has always proven to help the value of TE's with talent. From Jackie Harris, to Mark Chmura, to Keith Jackson, to Bubba Franks, to Donald Lee. If Favre goes to Tampa, can this kid be the next big thing at TE?
alex smith has always displayed the talent when given the opportunity. i feel like he currently isn't given enough opportunity to make plays on a consistent basis. favre would give him the chance to build a rapport with a new QB. could be a good situation...
Gruden likes TE's but Smith may find it difficult to make a splash this year.
The Bucs currently have Smith, John Gilmore, Ben Troupe and Jerremy Stevens at TE and that's how their depth chart shakes out right now. IMO by the time the season starts I thing the depth chart is Stevens, Gilmore, then Troupe and Smith in no particular order. The important thing I think is that in the red zone I see Tampa using a multiple TE set with 2-3 of the above possibly being in there at the same time. I think this translates into a nightmare if your trying to predict which of the TB TE's to play. My best guess is Stevens. Gruden loves Stevens and sees him as a match up problem for LB's and defensive backs in the red zone. He loves Gilmore and he is far and away the most physical and best blocker of all the TE's. Troupe is very athletic and has nice soft hands.
I think the Bucs have been waiting for Smith to emerge and be the stud they drafted him to be. I don't think that happens with the depth they have right now.
The TE position is literally wide open. Alex Smith is probably the front runner, but he has had the most opportunity and not done too much so far. I think it's going to take Troupe a little while to learn the O, and since he can't block worth crap he won't be able to be in the game too often. Jeremy Stevens is the guy I am watching. Gruden really wanted him back, and I think he could make a splash. But like I said, it's anyone's guess right now. Don't know if it's worth the roster spots to acquire any TB TEs right now. Wait until one of them emerges in pre-season.
