Agree 100%.

Along those same lines, one of my favorite dynasty trades ever, was getting a highly hyped TE, who did next to nothing his first 3 seasons as a throw in on a deal. That guy then instantly went on to be a top-5 TE for the next 5 years. I bring that up, because that guy was the only TE in the last 15 years to be drafted higher than Hockenson was...Vernon Davis.  The lesson seems twofold, be patient, and be especially patient with really high draft picks.

 
T.J. Hockenson (ankle) said he's "100 percent" healthy.

Hockenson said he wasn’t fully over his ankle surgery in mid-August. He also missed nine days of camp on the COVID-19 list. With Kenny Golladay (hamstring) looking questionable, Hockenson could see a higher than expected target share in Week 1. Hockenson has a plus matchup against a Chicago secondary that allowed the 12th-most fantasy points to tight ends last season.

T.J. Hockenson caught all five of his targets for 56 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against Chicago.

Hockenson was facing constant double teams with Kenny Golladay (hamstring) out. He boxed out safety Tashaun Gipson and made a contested catch in traffic for his touchdown. Hockenson looks fully healthy after missing four games last year. He's a TE1 for Week 2 against the Packers.

T.J. Hockenson caught 4-of-4 targets for 62 yards in the Lions' Week 2 loss to the Packers.

The Lions offense without Kenny Golladay has lacked rhythm, but it's given Hockenson more reps as a first- or second-look option in the passing game. Through two games, Hockenson has hauled in all nine of his targets and passed the eye test on tape. Neither game was a blow up, but they're good enough totals to keep Hockenson on the TE1/2 borderline depending on matchup. With Golladay returning, Hockenson's target totals could be more inconsistent. Luckily he catches the vulnerable Cardinals' defense in Week 3. Hockenson had a 6-131-1 receiving line in his first career game against them last season.

Given the huge TE days today (Higbee, Jonnu Smith, Jordan Reed, Mo Allie Cox, etc.) he was pretty far down the "breakout" list.

 
4 for 53 on 7 targets (tied with Golladay for team lead) and made some big catches at the end and drew a critical PI call on the game-winning, impressive, drive.

TJ is just OK.  As a 2-3 rd pick he is good.  As 7th overall not a good pick as he nowhere near Kelse, Kittle, Gronk in his prime.

T.J. Hockenson caught 4-of-7 targets for 53 yards in the Lions' Week 3 win over the Cardinals. 

Fantasy players know the Cardinals are a "flow-chart opponent" for opposing tight ends, but Matthew Stafford found Hockenson just one time behind halftime. This, as he hooked up with Jesse James for a touchdown. Stafford finally remembered his game-breaking seam stretcher after the break, but it was too late to truly goose Hockenson's fantasy day. Hockenson is working on establishing a 4/50 floor, but the Lions have thus far not hinted they will let him reach the ceiling. The Saints are a tough Week 4 matchup before the Lions' Week 5 bye.

Anyone have any input on his usage? He seemed non-existent for most of the game until the end. Not even sure he was on the field when James (other TE) caught both of his TDs.

 
T.J. Hockenson caught 2-of-5 targets for 17 yards and a touchdown in the Lions' Week 6 win over the Jaguars. 

It's the second straight week Hockenson has caught only two passes for sub-20 yards, though he managed to score both times out. Hockenson hasn't reached five catches since Week 1, while his season high for yardage is 62. The floor has proven acceptable in an awful year for the tight end position, but Hockenson needs to demonstrate more ceiling. Perhaps he will finally do so against the Falcons' bottom-barrel defense in Week 7.

They target him relentlessly at the goal-line, which is a good thing.  They threw it to him three straight times on the series he scored, including on the 4th down TC catch.

But for a guy who gets as much YAC as he does, they ignore him between the 20's. They should watch the way the 49ers use Kittle, I think they could do some similar things.

It’s weird because last year, they were feeding him everywhere on the field and he showed early Kittle like YAC ability. This year there hasn’t been any of it and they are him like a 37 year old Antonio Gates. The team is desperately in need of someone to make players in the middle of the field too.

Outside of week 1 last season, he was nowhere to be seen. 

I agree, use this guy more!

 
The Lions' track record of spending draft capital on TEs and RBs and then never featuring them is impressive.

It's baffling. Same thing every week; 4-5 targets. Going into yesterday he was 7th in Average Cushion league wide, 14th in Average Separation. Literally did not have a Contested Target all year. AYKM? Guy should be seeing 7-10 targets a week. MAKE THEM prove they can stop him. He's a problem for defenses every week and they are not exploiting that.

 
T.J. Hockenson caught 7-of-10 targets for 65 yards in Week 8 against the Colts.

The 10 targets led the team. It's another high-volume game for Hockenson, who scored the winning touchdown last week. Hockenson has had at least 50 yards or a touchdown every week. He could get another bump in targets with Kenny Golladay (hip) sidelined.

T.J. Hockenson (toe) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

An every-week TE1 all season, Hockenson is projected to lead the team in targets this week against the Vikings with Kenny Golladay (hip) out. But with Matthew Stafford (COVID list) now up in the air, it could be Chase Daniel throwing him the ball.

Lions TE T.J. Hockenson (toe) didn't practice Thursday. 

It's a new injury for Hockensen, and if he can't practice Friday, he could miss this week's game against Washington. Hockensen has Jesse James, the No. 2 tight end on Detroit's depth chart, would become a desperation option for fantasy players in deep leagues. Hockensen's absence would open up targets in the Lions offense, as the big tight end is second on the team with an 18 percent target share through Week 9.

Lions TE T.J. Hockenson (toe) is questionable for Week 10 against Washington. 

Added to Thursday's injury report, Hockensen was able to practice Friday -- a good sign for his Week 10 availability. The Lions can ill afford to lose their big tight end with Kenny Golladay (hip) sidelined. Jesse James, listed on the depth chart as the team's No. 2 tight end, would become a desperation streamer if Hockensen can't go.

The Vikings defense has been the worst I've seen under Mike Zimmer. Overall Washington has been a better defense than the Vikings have been. The strength of the Vikings defense is their LB and safeties right now though and perhaps they are better against the TE position than Washington is.

According to this Washington has given up 10.3 points per game to TE while the Vikings have given up 8.8 points to that position.

The main reason I mentioned that was to point out that the Lions were trying to force the ball to Hockenson a lot but they maybe need to find something else to do because the Vikings were all over it.

Hockenson did score earlier on in that game. He has done well this year.

I think this is on Stafford honestly. I've seen the same thing, where he locks on to TJ, telegraphs the throw, and the double coverage deflects the throw or outright INTs it.

Stafford does better when he buys some time (he can actually do this well if he doesn't panic) and let's TJ move away and then throw to an open position. Hockenson does this as well as anyone at the position outside of Kelce and Waller.  Nearly all of his TDs have come from making a second or third move on the DB in the endzone.  They just need to keep working on their timing between the '20s.

Its a positive from a FF perspective that they keep trying to get him the ball.

The one where Kendricks gets the interception he had Antonio Harris covering if Hockenson would have broke his route the other way, so Kendricks didn't have to worry about that.

The QB can't throw into that coverage.

 
T.J. HOCKENSON TE, DETROIT LIONS

Lions declared WR Kenny Golladay, WR Jamal Agnew, LB Jahlani Tavai, LB Jarrad Davis, DL Nick Williams, C Logan Stenberg, and QB David Blough inactive for Week 10 against Washington. 

Fantasy managers got a good scare Thursday when Hockensen missed practice with the toe injury. He was able to practice Friday and will get the green light against Washington. Golladay missing another game is a boon for Hockensen -- one of Week 10's few solid tight end options.

T.J. Hockenson (toe) caught 2-of-4 targets for 13 yards in the Lions' Week 10 win over Washington. 

Hockensen, who hurt his toe during Thursday's practice, looked to be limited through parts of the game. He rotated with Jesse James more often than usual and the results showed as much. His Week 10 performance was a break break for fantasy managers who have seen tight ends have big days against the Football Team. Hockensen drafters will have to hope their guy gets right for next week against the Panthers.

T.J. Hockenson (toe) was removed from the Week 11 injury report.

He'll continue to play through a toe injury that limited him in practice. The Lions scaled back Hockenson's snaps last week, giving him 66 percent of snaps. Hockenson is our No. 6 ranked tight end for Week 11.

T.J. Hockenson (toe) was "limited" in Monday and Tuesday's practices. 

There isn't any doubt about Hockenson's Thanksgiving status against the Texans, though his snaps have been dialed back a bit the past two weeks as he guts through his toe ailment. The short week won't help for Week 12, but Hockenson remains a no-brainer top eight option at fantasy's worst position.

T.J. Hockenson caught 5-of-8 targets for 89 yards in Detroit's Week 12 loss to the Texans.

Hockenson was (finally) a concerted part of Detroit's gameplan, recording a 10-yard pickup on the team's opening drive and hauling in a 51-yard bomb from Matthew Stafford on a reverse flea-flicker play. His 89 receiving yards were also a new season-high. Hockenson has now seen 15 targets the past two games without either Kenny Golladay (hip) or D'Andre Swift (concussion) available, keeping Hock locked in as a top-five tight end if only for his consistent onfield usage. Fantasy players have no choice but to start him against the Bears in Week 13 if both Golladay and Swift remain out.

7-84 on 9 targets

incredibly consistent this year, 50 yards or a TD in all but one game (which was the week he dealt with a big toe injury all week)

OTOH, hasn’t had an explosion game since WK 1 of 2019

will undoubtably go to the Pro Bowl but he’s just scratching the surface right now

 
if Detroit cant figure out how to use him properly theyre gonna lose him (tho it does seem to be getting better)

he could have double the stats

The next GM should make his extension an immediate priority. Two years + the 5th year club option remaining, he’s gonna command a boatload a year from now. 

Double might be a bit of a stretch - Wait,@Soulfly3 hyperbole? naw  :P  - but they def s/b targeting him 9-10 times a week instead of less than 7. They seem to have a relatively light number of route combinations compared to top tier offenses. Does he need to expand his route tree or do they need to expand his route tree? IOW, is it the team limiting him to what he’s capable of at this stage in his development? Given he seems to be exceptionally gifted in every observable area I’m guessing it’s the latter.

Bevell seems popular with the players. Stafford wasn’t comfortable with MP year 1 but seems to work well with Darrell. But I think we’re beyond choosing the HC / OC based on his level of comfort. Seems like things are trending towards moving Stafford while he still has first round + value. His cap hit will be more palpable than it’s been at any point since he came in the league.

Hock is gonna be on a long run of Pro Bowl regardless of who is in charge or calling plays or throwing to him. But today, he’s merely very good production wise. He’s nowhere near Kelce/Walker/Kittle. Beyond those three, no one is better (a couple are close.) He might be elite in 2021 but lot of questions to be answered this offseason.
