They were the top D a couple years ago for most of the season with one of the best return men (yards not scoring). They flat out stunk last year with a revolving door at one CB spot for 8 weeks. They were good the other 8 weeks. Rookie Mariani has been excellent and the D looks very good again.
Few things though-
Michael Griffin has an INT in just about every game and that simply isn't happening for the season. Yes they have excellent DBs, but that's borderline impossible for Griffin to do.
Jason Jones is being setup like Haynesworth and thriving. He is a grrr injury type guy though. I would say it's an almost certainty the guy misses some time. I hope I'm wrong, ya never want to wish that, but he seems to be the type. DE Hayes worries me in this way too.
Their LBers are a concern that's well hidden right now IMO between a talented DL and secondary. If they lose those two DL, they might be exposed and put up a horribly bad defensive performance "out of the blue."
Positive-
LBs are coming along nicely and Cecil is doing an excellent job.
Every single week I see Verner I love watching him more and more. I do not think the NFL has ever seen a CB with such a knack for touching the ball. Not in that he'll have some INT return or whatnot and look like Deion, it's just he touches the ball so often it's unreal. The other DBs afford him that opportunity. Eventually QBs are going to get him with well timed fakes and such, the WRs will stiff arm him while he's reaching for the ball and not to tackle, but right now it's just uncanny. I'd bet he's touched the ball more times than an opposing WR in every game he started.
I'd swear there's a forced fumble missing from this stat line, the other time he stood a guy up and recovered it. But I got four "starts" 2 INTs and 2FR 1 FF in my head, since defensive stats are grr subjective.
ETA 8 PD too
Hopefully positives outweigh the negatives and they continue to do well
