Terminology - "All-Purpose Yards" versus "Yards From Sc (1 Viewer)

These are the definitions of these terms I have always believed were correct. Maybe I'm wrong.

Yards From Scrimmage - The total of a player's rushing and receiving yardage. Does not include yardage on kick returns or yardage advancing fumble recoveries or laterals initiated past the line of scrimmage.

All-Purpose Yards - The total of a player's rushing and receiving and fumble recovery and lateral and kick return yardage.

For the most part, I think I have these correct. Perhaps yardage from laterals past the line of scrimmage is also included in Yards From Scrimmage, but I have always assumed it is not.

IMO, All-Purpose Yards is nearly meaningless. Lumping kick return yardage together with yards from scrimmage makes no sense, as they're entirely different things. When this or that TV talking head talks about a players All-Purpose Yardage, I pretty much tune them out. It doesn't matter much for NFL football; it's a novelty. It doesn't matter much for fantasy football; fantasy generally rewards only yards from scrimmage. But this isn't the point of my post. Doesn't matter much that I think it's meaningless.

I've noticed this past couple years that TV talking heads and NFL writers and fantasy folks are increasingly using the phrase All-Purpose Yards to denote a player's Yards From Scrimmage. In many cases (including most instances where a player does not return kicks), these numbers are equal, so it's not incorrect. Yet, it seems that the term Yards From Scrimmage would be preferable to the term All-Purpose Yards in instances where the numbers are equal, as Yards From Scrimmage is a more meaningful measure than All-Purpose Yards.

From context, however, it seems that folks are increasingly using the term All-Purpose Yards to describe a player's Yards From Scrimmage, as though they believe that All-Purpose Yards is a term which denotes a player's combined rushing and receiving yardage.

Is the term All-Purpose Yards becoming a synonym for Yards From Scrimmage ???

Topes,

I don't think the definitions have changed, and you have them right. I think what you're experiencing is the byproduct of 24-hour news cycles and the need for a lot more sports talking heads than ever before. So they're riffing and not being strident in their own use of the terms.
