Texans at Lions (1 Viewer)

As a Calvin, S Graham, and Daniels owner....youbwoukd think a long overtime would be good...but this blows so far

Well I was hoping the Lions would win just so that stupid rule didn't effect the game. But the Lions just love to lose on Thanksgiving I guess.

Oh man, that was all completely perfect. What a great start to the day to see that dumb goober Schwartz humiliated on national TV. I'm not sure what was better. The challenge flag or kicking on 3rd down from 47 yards away. I'm cracking up. :P

Well the Lions love to teach everyone new rules. Before today less than 1 percent of fans realized throwing the flag made automatically reviewable plays unreviewable.

Like you can't run along the big white line in the EZ as the QB? I think more than 1% know after the Mike Smith debacle last week. I'll admit I didn't realize it since it happened in preseason and they still reviewed it, granted that was with the better refs.

You do realize Detroit has already been sacked out of FG range twice already. That was not a terrible call. That said, Swartz is gone.

That's an absolutely terrible call to kick a 47 yard FG on 3rd down. The reason teams kick FG's on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd down is in case of a bad snap, the holder and sit on the ball and they can have another shot to kick a FG. A botched snap on a 47 yard attempt likely makes another FG attempt a 55 yarder. Dumb.Schartz is a dummy. The challenge flag was one thing, kicking a 47 yard FG on 3rd down tops that with ease. Ineptitude at its finest.

Whew, what a game. Can't say we didn't get our money's worth in entertainment value. Fell behind watching live action when I had to pause for awhile and finish off some cooking.

I feel for Detroit fans. After the Texans, the Lions are top two on my list of teams I cheer for. After seeing them make the playoffs last year it's almost harder to see them under perform this year. I was hoping for a Texans-Lions Super Bowl.

Freaking Texans are turning my hair gray the last two weeks though. Detroit did a good job much of the game giving Stafford time, but like Jacksonville last week I thought their pass blocking started to lapse more in the 2nd half. Or maybe that's Wade Phillip's adjustments. Only scoring 10 points in what amounted to the final 3 quarters was a difference maker.

Again impressed that the Texans have turned the corner. These are the kind of games that teams have to find a way to win, and too many years Houston never could.

I agree with those who are critical of both coaching staffs and how they handled the plays before the OT field goals. And both FGs were so close as it was, a few more yards could have easily made a difference.

On normal days, I might agree. In this games there were multiple instances on both sides where game-winning FG position was blown by either a turnover, a penalty, or a sack. At that point you just kick the ball on third down because any minus yardage is huge while a few plus yardage only provides very marginal improvement. I can understand the call the way the game had played out to that point.

The Texans were moving the ball when that ridiculous no-call/no-review happened and might have scored anyway. I think it's going too far to say that's why the Lions lost. It was completely absurd and nonsensical of course.

Someone linked to the 2012 rule book (have been working off the 2011 as hadn't seen a 2012 posted by the NFL until today).

The rule in question is not a specific if you throw the challenge flag when not allowed, you can't have a review done for you.

The rule is a general, if you commit a foul that delays the next snap, you cannot have a review done for you.

So the same rule would apply to delay of game, throwing a punch, or anything else that caused a delay in the game. Now I do question whether this delayed the next snap, since the next snap isn't allowed until the booth had a chance to signal down that the score was good or a replay was needed.

I suppose for consistency maybe they are not allowed to review after any dead ball foul by a team.

I agree. The rule is not all that clear. In my reading, a play in which there is an automatic review this stipulation does not apply. It would only apply is if it was a judgmental review which was not yet being reviewed, but the delay would help the review take place. All TD's are reviewed, so the delay caused no such benefit.
