Texans In-season Thread (2 Viewers)

Mathis on IR...Green game time decision

Running back Ahman Green increased the number of repetitions he had in practice Friday, but he will be a game-time decision Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at Reliant Stadium."He practiced much more (Friday)," coach Gary Kubiak said. "I would say he is still a game-time decision, but it was very encouraging."Jacoby Jones is less likely to be on the field. When he does return, Kubiak said he will return kicks and punts. Dexter Wynn will continue to handle those duties
As expected, the Texans placed receiver Jerome Mathis on injured reserve Saturday and activated Harry Williams from the practice squad.Mathis suffered a stress fracture of his lower leg against Indianapolis. He won't be eligible to return this season.Williams signed with the Texans in the offseason and was with them until the second roster reduction. Then he was signed to the practice squad.

Will Davis continue to get a lot of playing time when Jones and Johnson come back?
I would hope so as Walter looks average at best to me. Davis seems to be the WR, but there has been little indication from Kubiak and the Texans of what will happen over the next few weeks when everyone is healthy.

In his press conference, Kubiak suggested that Jacoby Jones and Ahman Green will practive this week and as of now look like goes for Week 6 versus Jacksonville. Will add linkage when the transcripts become available.

Good news on Green. Luckily was able to patch things together through bye weeks despite him. Will be curious to see how many carries Dayne is able to steal from a healthy Green.

Too bad Jacoby got hurt when he did. He had a great opportunity in front of him to make a meaningful real world & FF impact.

If Green is healthy there won't be many carries stolen unless the game is out of hand either way to keep the wear and tear down on him. Dayne is awful and the last two weeks has just proven it even further. Dayne is nothing more than 2 yards and a cloud of dust. The Texans have got to get healthy on offense. 2 big division games coming up and then 2 tough road games against SD and OAK. They've got to go at least 2-2 to keep a healthy record going into the BYE.

on if he could expect WR Jacoby Jones or WR Andre Johnson to practice) “Yes. When you look at Ahman (Green) and Jacoby (Jones), I would think that we’ve got an excellent chance for those two players to be back this week. Andre (Johnson), I think we’re still day-to-day; I can’t say that right now about him, even though he did do some running on Friday. We expect him to do some more tomorrow, and everything is looking very, very good. To say that he may be ready to go this week may still be a little bit of a reach. We’ll see, but I think we’re getting awful close

Nerd, what's your prospects on Jacoby for next week?
My understanding is that he will return both punts and kickoffs. I don't know how much ST TDs or yards matter in anyone's league. As a WR, I suspect that he will be the on the field quite a bit, but Davis, Walter and Jones closer to three equals than any of them attempting to replace Johnson. guessing 4 catches 55-60 yards and a couple of reverse carries.

So will they ease Ahman back in lightly with only a few carries or do you guys see a full workload early?

Daniels has really come on lately. If he could just throw in a TD every now and then....

Do you guys expect it to continue when all the WRs are healthy? Slight downtick due to less targets? Maybe an upgrade once defenses have to account for AJ?

Green will get his full carry load which is probbly around 15-18 carries. I would be surprised to see Green have a 25 carry game at any point. Dayne/Gado will still get 12 or so carries.

I think that Daniels is the 2nd option in the Texans passing game with everyone healty. For me. Changes in value are minimal in either direction as the texans are getting the ball to the WRs about the same as with Johnson just spread around more.

injury updates per Wed 10/10 pre conference

on RB Ahman Green practicing) “Yeah, he looked good. He took his normal reps and that was a positive for him, so I feel real good about him. Jacoby (Jones), I think is a day-to-day deal. He practiced and did more than he’s done in the past three weeks, but I think we’ll still wait and see. We’ll put the pads on him tomorrow. A couple of other things – Steve McKinney had his surgery today and everything went good. (Head athletic trainer) Kevin (Bastin) could tell you more about that if you want to know about it, but everything went good. And let’s see who else - we held out DeMeco (Ryans) today. He’s got a sore ankle, but he could have went if we needed to go. But we held him out and let him just get mental work.”(on the status of WR Andre Johnson) “You know, Andre (Johnson) ran today. He was out here right before practice and did a bunch of running. He’s made a lot of progress. I think we’re very, very encouraged in what we are seeing. I think as far as this week goes, he would still be very, very doubtful, but I think we were right on schedule with what we were thinking. Hopefully, next week we’re looking at getting him back.”
Short hand version- Green looking like a go; Jones still in the air (not as good as earlier reported); Andre Johnson week 7

Jacoby to play, but Davis and Walter to start.

Let’s see, what’s new? Nothing much; Jacoby (Jones) looked really good today, Ahman (Green), so we’re on schedule for them to be ready to go if there’s no setbacks. DeMeco (Ryans) was limited in practice, but I think he’s going to be fine. We just kind of limited him and kept him away from contact. Other than that, it’s encouraging because those other two look like they’re on schedule.”
(on if WR André Davis and WR Kevin Walter will still start) “Yes. Nothing will change. David (Anderson) will play in the three wides and then Jacoby (Jones) will be a backup for those guys.”

So looks like Jacoby is healthy? I'm in a return yard league and nabbed Jacoby post-draft when he showed pre-season flashes in the return game. How much action do you think he'll see at WR? I know Kubs said in pre-season they'd do a lot of 3wr sets, has that changed with AJ out or are they still doing a lot of 3wide?

Here was a quote from the Chronicle early this morning.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/5207980.html

The Texans saw some progress from wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who was more involved in practice Thursday. Coach Gary Kubiak said Jones is on target to return to the field this week, along with running back Ahman Green.

Jones has missed his last two starts with a separated shoulder, which he suffered on a 74-yard punt return against Indianapolis. Barring any setbacks, Kubiak said Jones will come off the bench as a receiver and return punts.

"He asked me how I felt in practice and I told him, 'Coach, I'm ready to go,' " Jones said."

Coolnerd, you seem to be the resident Texans expert. In another thread I have tried to figure out who to start this week vs the Jags in a 1 ppr league between Davis and Daniels. Who would you recommend.

Mathis is probably gonna be on Davis and you can see what the results of him covering the #1's of his other opponents.

Daniels would be a safer play and is close to being a startable TE in PPR every week, but if you wanted to bet for someone to make an expected huge play or two then Davis. Do see PT25's note on R. Mathis coverage skills, though.

I'm surprised that Ahman, a very capable receiver, has not been more involved in the passing game. Knowing that the Jax D is very good against the run as an OC I would try more screen plays so that the D line will have to hesitate before attacking. Just my :hey:

The first two games fell perfectly for the Texans and they took the air out of ball late in 3rd quarter. They attempted less than 30 passes in both of those games. Green was hurt in in week 3. I would say that we really have not seen what Green will be asked to do in the passing game yet.

A caller today on Sportsradio 610 asked about Charles Spencer. Didn't hear Kubiak's quotes directly, but the morning crew said that the latest from Kubiak was that he wasn't optimistic about Spencer playing again this year.

for those who have not followed the Texans closely, they are among the teams in the NFL who you take the injury info, especially thier initial report with a critical eye...more times than not the injury has been more serious than first reported.
There was a reason I posted earlier, see today's Andre Johnson speculation. per chron.com
Nov. 18 possible for Johnson's return, but date is hard to pin downBy DALE ROBERTSONCopyright 2007 Houston Chronicle Andre Johnson keeps wanting to believe his return date is closer, but he's no longer prepared to make predictions. His sprained knee will make the decision for him. "When it happened, I thought not needing surgery meant that after just a little rehab I'd be ready to get back out there," the Pro Bowl receiver said. "But it's not like that. It's a learning experience for me, the first time I've been through something like this."Early projections had him returning for Tennessee next week, but that seems unlikely. A safer bet might be Nov. 18 against New Orleans.

The theme of Johnson's injury being more serious than initially lead on continues

one more week. Andre Johnson said he remains frustrated at how long his rehabilitation is taking. For the first week or two after the injury, Johnson used to walk into the locker room in his immobilizer saying, "I might play this week." He could hardly bend his knee and everyone knew he wasn't going to go.

Those jokes have since stopped. Johnson had no idea it was going to take him more than a month to get back on the field.

"There's nothing funny about it anymore," he said.

Johnson said he was told by Dr. Walter Lowe that rehabilitation on an injury as serious as his takes about six weeks. Johnson just completed four weeks, which means Johnson will likely miss at least two more weeks. Then the Texans have to decide if they bring him out against Oakland or allow him to rest through the bye week and return against the New Orleans Saints, when he would have even more time to rehab.

Johnson still doesn't have his full range of motion. His leg breaks down after he runs for awhile.

"I was just joking around about if I could just go home and cut my leg off and get a new one," Johnson said. "It's real aggravating. I'm just doing whatever I need to do to get on the field.

"I wish I could say in a week or two I'll be back on the field. But I can't say that. ... After I run for so long, it gets pretty weak. I'm still in that stage of getting my strength back. I'm still working on my range of motion."

With how much Johnson means to this team, there is no reason the Texans should rush him back. The rest of the receivers have grown into a solid group, offering plenty of targets for quarterback Matt Schaub

Tough break for the Texans losing him for this long. I think we had a fair shot at a playoff berth with the roster before injuries. But losing Andre and the hit the return game has taken with losing Mathis for the year, and Jacoby for the time he's been out... I just don't think the Texans will be able to overcome that if it continues on for much longer.

The explosion from the offense and special teams was lost. Even though Davis and Walter have played well, they are still not the dynamic playmakers that scare defenses.

The offense has not played well without AJ which keeps the defense on the field. The passing game and pass protection has been decent, but we haven't been able to get a run game going in a single game yet. We rank 29th in rushing yards per game and 6th in passing. Reruns of what we saw against JAX may re-occur the rest of the season unless the offense can get something going with sustainable drives ending in TD's.

I was optomistic we could make it to 8-8 this year, but I'm not so sure anymore. @OAK, NO, TB & JAX week 17 are the only games I'm thinking we have a solid chance in. Everything else on the schedule looks pretty tough to me and I'm not even all that certain about @OAK or @CLE.

We need a win at home vs Tenn this weekend, if nothing if not to try and get the Vince monkey off our back.

(on QB Matt Schaub’s injury) “I’ll tell you what, Matt is just beat up, to be honest with you. He’s having an MRI. We’re concerned about his hip. The x-rays of his leg were negative. We’re concerned about his hip right now, so we’ll do the MRI this afternoon. But just in general, Matt’s beat up. He’s taken a lot of shots over the course of the first seven weeks of this season, and hopefully he’s just beat up and we can get him back healthy

Given what Rosenfels did in the second half today the Texans might be better off sitting Schaub for awhile if he's hurting. I'm a Schaub fan but it's hard to ignore the fact he hasn't thrown a TD in three games and Rosenfels put up some huge numbers today and almost led the Texans to the win.

The offensive line is crap. They seem to have fallen apart without McKinney. They are moving NO ONE in the running game at all since Flanagan's been in there. For a while today it looked like they couldn't even get a yard on the ground. At the beginning of the season Schaub was getting rid of quick and making the OL look a lot better. Now that they can't run it AT ALL he's taking a lot of shots. If they let Schaub take a beating like the last few weeks he's going to start looking like the old #8...McKinney's no All-Pro but I think his loss has been just as important as losing AJ...

As I posted in another thread:"You must have missed the 3 INT's and the lost fumble on the snap in the 1st 3 quarters. I don't care how good his 4th quarter looked against a prevent defense, Sage was awful."

I thought he started off poorly but finished strong. And the bottom line is he got the team into the end zone with frequency. Schaub has had major problems finishing drives for the past few games. Again, I like Schaub a lot but 0 TDs in his last three games is not a good sign at all.

Caught part of Kubiak on 610 this afternoon. Only stuff I found interesting. Owen Daniels is the emergency QB, so if Sage had been injured, Owen would have taken over at QB.

Tomorrow they should know more about Schaub and will decide them if they want to bring in a 3rd QB or not. They would want to get someone who has practice squad time remaining, if so.

Daniels started his collegiate career at Wisconsin as a quarterback.

What happened to him? Lotta passing yards for Houston this week but no OD.
I believe he was targetted a few times he didn't make the catch, though I can't tell you from memory whether it was the QB's fault or his or a good defensive play on them.

whats the latest on Schuab's injury?
From the Houston Chronicle:
With just one healthy quarterback heading into the week, coach Gary Kubiak remains hopeful Matt Schaub will be able to play against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Schaub has absorbed a few hard hits, and is suffering from a bruised thigh, bruised hip, sore lower leg and sore lower back.

Kubiak said he won't hesitate to start Sage Rosenfels if Schaub doesn't show drastic improvement in the coming days.

"I always look at it this way: You want to know if you put a player out there (that) he can protect himself," Kubiak said. "So that's your concern with Matt.

"But Sage is a fine player, and if Matt can't go, we go with Sage. And if Matt's capable but we don't think he's 100 percent, then maybe he's the backup."

If this game is moved to either Houston or Dallas, as a Chargers fan, I am going to be royally ticked off. Might as well give Houston a ninth home game because I am sure Dallas won't be a "neutral" site at all. Anyone remember when the Saints had a "home" game in Giants Stadium against the Giants?

Adam Schefter(sp) on NFLN just said the decision will be made on thursday. He is saying the Houston or Dallas option is likely.I will tell as a Houston fan, there is little to no support for them outside of metro Houston. Dallas, San antonio, and Austin do not regularly even carry Texans games on television and there is no significant Texans talk on sports radio in those markets either. Yeah, it is only a 4 hour car ride, but I would bet there are nearly as many Charger fans as Texans fans in the Dallas area. Not ideal for your Chargers, but not a real advantage for the Texans.

Andre Johnson- may have a chance to play against Raiders

Andre Davis- bruised ribs (day to day)

Ahman Green- swelling in the knee (day to day)

Matt Schaub- head (day to day) under went the battery of tests which were negative, but still has headaches

Joe Echemandu - tweeked hamstring (under going MRI), but Kubiak did not think it serious

Owen Daniels- high Ankle Sprain (under going MRI), apparently Daniels had the same injury in college and does not consider as serious as that one (day to day)

Roster moves

Craig Nall and Brandon Frye signed...Harry williams back to the practice squad

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5257820.html

The Texans have signed veteran quarterback Craig Nall as insurance for quarterback Matt Schaub, who suffered a concussion in the San Diego game and probably won't play against Oakland.

With Sage Rosenfels expected to start against the Raiders, the Texans needed a veteran who has enough experience to play in case something happens to Rosenfels.

Schaub should be healthy enough to return to the lineup for the New Orleans Saints, who visit Reliant Stadium after the Texans' bye week.

The Texans have been carrying two quarterbacks on the active roster, but Schaub's most recent injury has forced them to make other moves at that position. They signed Shane Boyd to the practice squad last week.

Nall was Green Bay's fifth-round pick in 2002. He was drafted by Texans offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, who was the Packers' head coach at the time. Nall was waived by Buffalo on Oct. 19.

"(The offense) is pretty familiar after being with (Sherman) for four years in Green Bay," Nall said on Tuesday. "I got a chance to look at it last night. It doesn't seem much different, especially in the passing game. The terminology is different. The run game is very different, so I'll have to catch up on it. But overall as a system, I hope I can pick it up very quick, and I'm confident I will."

Nall played at LSU and later transfered to Northwestern State. To make room on the roster for Nall, the Texans waived receiver Harry Williams.

The Texans also will move rookie offensive tackle Brandon Frye from the practice squad to the regular roster today. They'll have to make another move to clear a spot for Frye on the roster. Williams will be re-signed to the practice squad to replace Frye.
