Not looking good but not dead yet.

Addressing the team on Monday, a "furious" coach Rex Ryan told his players that the Jets will scrap their pass-heavy offense in favor of a run-first approach going forward."Ground and pound is back," reports beat writer Rich Cimini. According to LG/C Matt Slauson, Ryan was "emotionally hurt" after Sunday's loss to the Ravens, but "today, he was pissed." The approach would make sense if the Jets were generating any production from the running game. Through four games, New York ranks 30th in the league in yards-per-carry average (3.09) and starting running back Shonn Greene's 3.08 YPC clip ranks 50th among players with at least 15 rushing attempts. This is shaping up as a nightmare offense. Source: Rich Cimini on Twitter Oct 3 - 5:56 PM

So all the talking heads on this board bashing Greene, even the HC says this when asked about a RB rotation change..."How about we give Shonn Green a chance?"

what the hell are you rambling dude? I can never understand your position.from the quote it sounds like the Jets want to run more, nothing about giving or taking away from Greene specifically

Greene is no probowl running back I agree BUT that line is gawd awful, not sure any RB could be successful right now behind that mess

Keep an eye out for a Bilal Powell sighting. Rex seems pissed enough to yank anyone on a moment's notice, including Greene.

If my league didn't have such short benches I'd speculatively pick up Powell NOW.

joe mcknight had 100 yds rushing in week 17 last year, had a kick return td last night, and a huge blocked punt in week 1. if hes not opening eyes with his all around play then i dont know hell ever get a chance

Sooner or later someone should explain me the Powell hype on this boardThe guy was AWFUL in preseason (2.2 ypc) and he's behind Greene, Tomlinson & McKnight

Bilal Powell is a nobody. Fuhgedaboutit.

Shonn Greene is a solid back. He just isn't very explosive. He's not a guy who's going to break lots of 20+ yard runs and lead the league in YPC. He's a Rudi Johnson type. Plug him in and give him 25 carries, and he can grind his way to 100 yards.

And unless their o-line starts creating at least some push, it won't matter. Greene is an average talent at best, but expecting anyone to do much more than he's done in these circumstances is wishful thinking

Here is at least a scouting report from National Football Post. Backs have come from more out of nowhere.A taller back with a broader upper body and decent girth through his lower half. Showcases a good first step when asked to press the hole. Has the speed to get to the corner and run off tackle and looks comfortable quickly getting downhill. Displays good patience and exhibits some balance with his footwork once he gets into the open field. However, he isn't real fluid laterally and struggles to break down and make people miss in tight areas. Is more of a linear runner who does a nice job running with a low pad level and does a nice job not exposing too much of his frame. Possesses a strong lower half, pumps his legs through contact and can shrug off defenders and churn out tough yards inside. Exhibits a decent thump as a blocker as well, but doesn't do a good job of using his hands to stick to defenders through the play. Is more of just an initial pop guy who then will quickly fall off the block. Has the body control to catch the football out of the backfield, but isn't shifty enough to consistently make the initial man miss.Is more impressive in the open field than given credit for. Possesses good straight-line speed for his size, has the vision and patience to cut against the grain and accelerates well out of his breaks. Possesses a strong stiff arm to keep himself clean and set up blocks and use his sneaky speed to create in the open field. However, runs more upright once he gets into the clear and will expose himself to more hits at the second level. Impression: You almost have to wonder what was wrong with this guy as a junior. He's physical, presses the hole quickly and can be a threat in the open field. Isn't real sudden or shifty in tight areas and is more of a linear runner. But has a good enough size/speed combo to make an NFL roster and contribute in more of a zone-blocking scheme.

I'm not a Jets homer or insider....but just trying to read the tea leaves. To me they are pointing to Powell getting a look - and maybe a long look - at some point in the next few games if Greene continues to struggle (and he will struggle - no question about that). Rex has apparently told his team that they're going back to a "run-first" approach. That means the focus will be on Greene to deliver. If he doesn't, he will get pulled. Personally, I don't think the Jets braintrust has a tremendous amount of confidence in LT being their 1st/2nd down back. I think it's the same with McKnight - or else he would have been given a shot already. He's been on the team for a couple of years and I don't sense that he's in their plans as a bell cow type back. I think he's a perfect returner and backup for LT - a 3rd down COP guy. For the lead role they want someone who can run between the tackles and move the chains. A grind-it-out ball control guy. I don't think an aging LT or McKnight fits the bill. There were reports that Ryan and Tannenbaum were celebrating and high-fiving each other when they were able to snag Powell in the 4th round. They are very high on this kid. Personally I see him as the next in line for Greene's gig - not LT or McKnight.

Question for Jets homers. Do the Jets have the talent to fix their oline issues? I'm in the Powell camp when it comes to replacing Greene but if it happens I definitely see an increased role for McKnight as well. Interesting to see Rex use him at corner again this week.

Mangold makes a huge difference.... As I wrote in another thread, I get that Hunter at RT has looked real bad but, that happens when you transition 1 guy. Last year they transitioned Slausson at LG and he looked bad for a while too - people went nuts and then they were in the Championship game. The rest of the OL stayed relatively healthy and Slausson was allowed to develop.. AND... HUNTER PLAYED DECENT AT RT ONCE WOODY WENT DOWN and played well in 6 games!!!!So, yeah, if Mangold can come back and healthy he makes that much of a difference.Just the other night we saw errant snaps and bad reads at the line - an unhealthy Mangold fixes THAT in his sleep and at least gives the team a chance.Right now we're talking a Street FA playing Center!!!!!!That said, I have never ever owned Greene in FF.... But, I do think it has to get better as the OL gets better.

They did.He sucks.

I don't think Greene is anything special as a RB, but he is better than he has produced so far this season. The O-line has had issues to say the least and the Jets have faced pretty good run defenses in three of their first four games in Dallas, Baltimore and Jacksonville. They face the Patriots this week who are averaging allowing 4.8 per carry to opposing runners tied for 23rd in the League. So this is his week to show he deserves the touches. If Greene can produce against the Pats the rest of the schedule looks promising with two against the Bills, another one versus the Pats, KC, Miami, and Philly. Also his weeks 14-16 of KC, Philly and NYG isn't bad at all.

haha, I like Ryan but just because he says something doesn't make it so. Joe B had the perfect retort to the Rex quote..."Without the offensive line opening holes, it'll be more like "ground and punt"."

Plus his speed and quickness could be what the running game needs. He may be the only back on the roster that can make something happen when the blocking lanes aren't there.
