That Vikings Defense (1 Viewer)

I know my Steelers have got some OLine problems, but still and all, I was EXTREMELY impressed by the Vikes first team D last night. I wonder if this is not going to be the best defense in football? They already had a great defensive line, and now Jared Allen? Unreal.

They will be the first defense I will draft if I can get them. I will also avoid starting any running backs except the elite ones against this team. My only concern is if Tavaris Jackson remains inconsistent, the defense may be on the field too long. But other than that, these guys could be DOMINANT.

What do you guys think?

I rarely pick a D early in my re-drafts. This year is an exception, as Minny appears to be on another level.
Just keep in mind that good NFL defense doesn't always translate to good fantasy defense. However, MN ranked in the top 5 last year and should better that this year. I agree that MN should be one of the top two fantasy defenses in 2008.

I would say especially if you've got a scoring system that rewards points for sacks. There's going to be a LOT of sacks. Mucho speed on that defensive line.

I said in another post, Ray Edwards is going to make a ton of $$$ because of Williams/Williams and Allen. He will have one on one matchups all year. If Madieu Williams can stay on the field, that defense is scary good.

I think in a redraft league they go pretty high. In a new keeper league I play in, they went in the 10th. I took Ray Rice.

In redrafts what round?

I got them at 10.11 yesterday. Traded up to do it, as I didn't think they'd have lasted to the late 11th.

If you watched the Steeler game last night (especially the first half), one of the things that impressed me the most was how the Vikes handled screen passes. The Steelers with Big Ben and Fast Willie are generally very good at screens; they have good timing. It's of course a great play to use against an overaggressive defense.

But last night Pittsburgh tried a couple screens in the first half, and those Vikings were so friggin fast that even though they were rushing Big Ben, Parker got totally stuffed. That was when I was shaking my head and muttering, "Dang these guys are good."

i know week 3 of the preseason is most indicative, but the Seahawks did carve them up pretty good in week 1

MIN DEF looks good and should be strong early. If they can get decent QB play to sustain drives on offense then they should be strong season long. If QB play is poor then the DEF may begin to wear down towards the playoffs, both FF and NFL.

I think the Minn. DT will get a lot of FF points, the offense for Minn. not great and the DT will be on the field more. They will get tired by 4th quarter though since they have the 4th hardest sch. for 2008.

Noone's worried about that secondary, eh?

They did finish dead LAST in yards allowed last year.

Though I do acknowledge that's in part to how well they were able to stuff the run.

I got them late in a redraft last year as my 2nd DST and was very pleased... but I doubt I'm able to get them again this year. I see other DSTs that are less heralded that will probably crack the top 5 or so... so I'll probably roll the dice with one of those teams' Def.

teams literally completely gaveup on the run game last year and totally were passing, yes they gaveup the most yards passing but also faced the most attempts against, look at yards per attempt and they were middle of the pack around 16th I believe...the pass D isnt as bad as most think, but the run D was so good teams had no choice but to pass, thus gaining alot of yards through the air...couple that with no pass rush and QBs had tons of time...enter Jared Allen to help that and I expect the D as a whole to be dominant, like you saw last night in the 1st half when the Steelers did nothing and only scored because Gus thought his WR changes uniforms...

I am less concerned with that this year. Last year they couldn't pressure the passer giving the offense time to allow routes to open up. The addition of Allen should decrease that time. Cedric Griffin really improved over last season and Charles Gordon/Marcus McCauley are showing that they are capable nickel backs. Hopefully Madieu returns healthy as I think he would be a great asset back there. Tyrell might become good, but I hate relying on a rookie in the secondary.

Fat Pat sat out that game. Healthy Pat = stout defense, broken Pat = :blackdot:

I know it is a little off topic, but the guy that I have been impressed with on the Viking defense is Letroy Guion - their draft pick from Florida State. DT with a little quickness and hits really hard. I like his potential!

Guppy move

I haven't done a mock or real draft yet that Minn D was available past the 7th round. That's too steep a price to pay for me. I'll gamble on the Tennessees, Buffalos, and Dallases in the 11th or 12th instead.
