The 100 Greatest Songs of 1982 #1. Little Red Corvette (1 Viewer)

The original Valerie is good, but I prefer the remix from '87 a bit more, probably because I was used to that version by the time I heard the original. Good song either way.

What’s wild is Madness was in essence a one-hit wonder here in the States
not really - One Step Beyond and It Must Be Love both got a lot of airplay in the US.
It Must Be Love was their only other top 40 song here in the States, but One Step Beyond didn't chart here. House of Fun should have been a monster hit here!
i think One Step Beyond is their best song. its Devo on steroids. Our House got more views because MTV was in more homes in 1982.

Once again, ladies and gentlemen, Prince Buster

(One Step Beyond is a cover of one of his B-sides)

One Step Beyond - Prince Buster

Prince Buster wasn't huge because the world wasn't hip to the songs of the Jamaican streets -- Jamaican ska -- in 1964.

92. Steve Winwood “Valerie” (from Talking Back To The Night)

Legendary blues rocker Steve Winwood sort of reinvented himself in the 80s with a series of pop hits. I suspect that, much like Heart (who also filled the 80s with pop hits and ballads), he isn’t too fond of this period, even if it made him more money than ever before.

Still, “Valerie” is a nice catchy pop song that is sung expertly. It may not be “Gimme Some Lovin’” or “Dear Mr. Fantasy”, but it’s good enough to make this list (on the low end.)
When I saw him open for Steely Dan a few years ago, the only '80s song he played was Higher Love. Almost everything else was from Traffic or The Spencer Davis Group.

Like it should be.

hey ...I ****ing love Steely Dan ...lay off

Sure. I can see that. I'm not a big fan, but that wasn't a cut on the Dan. I just can't imagine anybody seeing the Dan unadulterated. I mean, that is some coke and booze music.

They're an at the bar, lean into someone you haven't met, and launch into your prior athletic exploits type of band.

I've seen them four times. Their crowd is mostly white-collar Boomers and Gen-Xers who arrive just before the show starts, making traffic really suck if you haven't gotten there early.

they have never been the kind of band that made me want to see them live ...but so talented, and in '77 or so - pretty damn great in an album mix

I'm not going to war for 'em

Every Steely Dan fan I’ve ever known was an audiophile type: the kind that spends exorbitant amounts on stereo equipment so that they can listen to Aja properly.

Not me! My hearing is shot from all those rock concerts, so high-end audio equipment is wasted on me.

91. Oingo Boingo “Private Life” (from Nothing to Fear)

Nothing to Fear was not nearly the brilliant effort of the previous year (Only A Lad), but the headliner song is pretty good nonetheless. The video is fun to watch because Danny Elfman is such a tremendous presence. Also, I may be imagining it, but I feel like in parts of the melody here I can hear themes that would appear in some of his future soundtrack compositions.

Another band that always seemed to be having fun - and can't help but respect the always eccentric but uber-talented Elfman.

90. Bauhaus “Ziggy Stardust” (from The Sky’s Gone Out)

This cover by Bauhaus is faithful to the original, yet somehow darker in tone, thanks to the goth vocals of Peter Murphy and the pre-grunge guitar playing of Daniel Ash. One of their very best efforts.

same - my friend is always sending me links to speakers that are "marked down" to $2,000 each and I just laugh. There's no way my ears can tell the difference at this point.

89. Wall of Voodoo “Mexican Radio” (from Call of the Wild)

I have fond memories of Stan Ridgeway. However I went to see him at a small venue in the late 80s, and he chose not to perform this, his most famous tune. Oh well.

Can’t hear this song and not envision Stan’s face coming out of a vat of beans.

I dont think his split from the band was amicable. Andy Prieboy did a good job filling in. They had a sizeable hit with Far Side of Crazy in Australia with Prieboy that charted higher than Mexican Radio.
Ridgway had a huge hit in Europe with Camouflage. Went to #4 in the UK

88. Billy Joel “Pressure” (from The Nylon Curtain)

This song does a good job of making me nervous whenever I hear it, which of course was the intent. Even so, it’s a catchy pop melody (there are few artists better than Billy Joel at creating catchy pop melodies) so it’s fun. The lyrics are a little cliche.

Billy definitely showing his New York bias again here shouting out Channel 13 (which was - and still is - the local PBS station).

I am a HUGE fan of Pressure. Love that the video is the full song and not the single edit. Top 5 Billy Joel tune for this fan.
I don't recall there being a single edit, but just heard it on YouTube. Hate when they neuter songs like that - it's not like it's a 10 minute song or anything.
Agreed. They cut out most of the bridge, so it’s them trying to make it more concise. Yuck. I always hated how the edit of Let’s Go Crazy by Prince removed most of the intro. The song isn’t even that long!!

Now I wish you HAD gone in the Tucker Carlson thread

It's always been the case, and I can see it for songs with very long middle instrumental parts ("Light My Fire"/Doors and "Twilight Zone"/Golden Earring come to mind). But mostly it boils down to radio stations dumbing it down to the lowest common denominator.

They bastardized "American Pie" something awful for the single.

IIRC, they cut out the middle portion of "Whole Lotta Love".

Down by the River and Like a Hurricane were released as singles, both chopped to about a third of their original length.

I wonder if AM radio ever even played them with the truncation.

Neither charted, so probably not.

Like A Hurricane did hit #48 in the UK. They love him in Wales.

87. The Clash “Straight to Hell” (from Combat Rock)

This will be considered a “deep cut” by most people, even though it was released as a single. But it’s a terrific tune featuring some excellent bossa nova style drumming by Topper Headon and some of Joe Strummer’s best and most poetic lyrics.

I had a brief thought when first glimpsing the title that it was this (came out in 1983). So Spinal Tap-ish.

86. John Cougar “Hand To Hold On To” (from American Fool)

While reading up about this song, I was surprised to learn that John Mellencamp hasn’t played it live since 1988- he must hate it. I certainly don’t; I’ve always thought it was a very good rock tune with some pretty heartfelt lyrics.

I DID know already that Mellencamp hated the name “John Cougar” and was pissed off that the record execs insisted that he use it. The breakout success of American Fool helped him escape from that.

Nice pick - like this one so much more than its album peers Hurts So Good and Jack & Diane.

Oops. As will be seen I don’t really agree with you about this….

I fly like paper get high like planes
If you catch me at the border I got visas in my name

All I wanna do is...pop pop pop pop
And take your money

The original is okay, too, ;)

I figured they’d be there and understandably so. Just a personal preference.

And "Straight To Hell" is no longer even remotely a deep cut after M.I.A.'s sample, but I get what tim is saying.

It is a great song on its own.
