Here's the article on Ryan Mallett: http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/sports/columnists/hyde/blog/2011/03/draft_winds_lies_damn_lies_and_1.html

What's kind of sad about this situation is that some of the rumors are probably being spread by teams hoping to take him later in the draft. They invite him in and say good things to his face, then turn around and leak some negative material to drop his stock. Dirty business indeed.

Cecil, great interview and anyone interested in getting the skinny on Mallett should also check out the article written by Dave Hyde (I believe in conjuction with Kouffman, although he is not credited in the byline) that appeared in The Sun Sentinel, probably the definitive look at Mallett.

SunSentinel.com

The bottom line for those that haven't read the article is, regarding the drug use allegations and character issues - while there is a lot of smoke, the author couldn't find any fire. And after revisiting Mallett's Q&A with the press at the Combine, I will agree that he comes across as confident rather than cocky and quite real in his responses (which don't have the flavor of being calculated and scripted in advance, as seems with Newton). And the piece also does a good job of debunking the claim that Mallett is Dan McGuire redux.

I have got to say that the interview and related article have put Mallett in a whole new light for me (changing my perception that he is some sort of cross between Ryan Leaf and Jimmy Clausen). I now think that most of the perceived negatives about him are overblown and that he really should be talked about in the same breath as the other top QBs of his class.

:goodposting: That's Kouffman (and the rest of the guys from Universal Draft) on that series. It's fantastic stuff - they've done great work on all the QBs and are very nice guys. Can't recommend the series enough.

Thanks for checking out the interview! Chris is a great guy, and we hang out every year at the Shrine Game in Orlando.

I was at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and didn't think Mallett came off as super cocky. With my career I am constantly interviewing/interacting with players, and I've come across some world class DBags. Graham Harrell has to be the biggest one on that list, and Mallett's attitude was nowhere near as bad as Harrell.

Mike Hart, Steve Breaston, and LaMarr Woodley are Mallett supporters and his 'image problems' certainly seem overblown under greater scrutiny.
