The Babys (1 Viewer)

One of the most underrated bands of all time.
This is a pleasant surprise. Outside of my closest friends growing up, nobody mentioned The Babys, so it's a little heartwarming to see someone else remember them, so :hifive: to @ChiefD.

Despite two top 20 hits, they just seemed to miss having one so memorable that it had to be etched into the greats of their time. Nonetheless, their catalog ultimately reflects the quality of their talent and doesn't have to be tied to nostalgia to be enjoyed.

To me, Head First is their most listenable album from start to finish and is a good showcase of the band's range.

In my feeble imagining, there's a pretty easy sell on an alternate universe where the Babys had the Cars' career.

As it was, they got steamrolled by a couple of movements - New Wave and Arena Rock - that sucked all of the air out of the room on that side of the radio dial. That said, there's a million stories like this where really talented artists (and the Babys were talented) just couldn't get a toehold.

'60s soul singer James Carr falls into this bucket for me, too.

It felt like they were either early or late by about 4-5 years, and they weren't enough of something to get planted in the zeitgeist. The sad part is that whatever was missing was probably more related to their look than sound.

I like that "babys" isn't even a real word.

And the song "Back on my Feet Again".

You somehow just pinned down something so obvious that I'd somehow missed. I knew if John Waite was involved that something would be sneakily up to no good.

The Babys look more bought and sold than Lloyd Dobler could embarrass himself over dinner about. Twice over.

Thumper rule not in effect in these types of threads, by the way. Waite makes me wanna drill my forehead through his airbrushed nose. I have no real comment on their music, but things don't look good for the product in my world.

Please carry on.

eta* this is edited, of course.

Jonathan Cain had a brief run with the band before joining Journey.

Yes - and Cain and fellow former Babys John Waite and Ricky Phillips got together several years later - along with Neal Schon - to form the short-lived Bad English.

Funny you should mention that...

I don’t joke about Bad English.

You're not wrong but you're wrong at the same time. If you missed it in the M-AD thread, The Babys were a put-together band, but they were put together around the original keyboard player, Michael Corby, so Waite was just a hired hand at first. When Corby had visions of being the next Genesis, Waite was more straightforward-ish rock and roll. Corby got the boot BY THE LABEL AND NOT THE BAND after the third album, which is how Jonathan Cain entered the picture.

Waite makes me wanna drill my forehead through his airbrushed nose.
I was saving this for the end of the M-AD draft but submitted for your approval. :pokey:

Worse.

Can't hate.

:)

I made it through and another John Waite song has gone forward and has been heard in my ears. Not terrible. Lots of women yelling during the guitar solo.
