This is a pleasant surprise. Outside of my closest friends growing up, nobody mentioned The Babys, so it's a little heartwarming to see someone else remember them, soOne of the most underrated bands of all time.
In my feeble imagining, there's a pretty easy sell on an alternate universe where the Babys had the Cars' career. This is a pleasant surprise. Despite two top 20 hits, they just seemed to miss having one so memorable that it had to be etched into the greats of their time. Nonetheless, their catalog ultimately reflects the quality of their talent and doesn't have to be tied to nostalgia to be enjoyed.
To me, Head First is their most listenable album from start to finish and is a good showcase of the band's range.
It felt like they were either early or late by about 4-5 years, and they weren't enough of something to get planted in the zeitgeist. The sad part is that whatever was missing was probably more related to their look than sound. In my feeble imagining, there's a pretty easy sell on an alternate universe where the Babys had the Cars' career. This is a pleasant surprise. As it was, they got steamrolled by a couple of movements - New Wave and Arena Rock - that sucked all of the air out of the room on that side of the radio dial. That said, there's a million stories like this where really talented artists (and the Babys were talented) just couldn't get a toehold.
'60s soul singer James Carr falls into this bucket for me, too.
I like that "babys" isn't even a real word.
And the song "Back on my Feet Again".

Yes - and Cain and fellow former Babys John Waite and Ricky Phillips got together several years later - along with Neal Schon - to form the short-lived Bad English.Jonathan Cain had a brief run with the band before joining Journey. This is a pleasant surprise. The Babys look more bought and sold than Lloyd Dobler could embarrass himself over dinner about. Twice over.
I was saving this for the end of the M-AD draft but submitted for your approval.Waite makes me wanna drill my forehead through his airbrushed nose.
Corby got the boot BY THE LABEL AND NOT THE BAND after the third album, which is how Jonathan Cain entered the picture.
