I've already posted my five but if you're looking for a movie to stream this weekend, The Package is a 1989 Cold War spy thriller with Hackman as an Army sergeant trying to prevent an assassination. Hackman probably took the role just to pick up a check but he's solid as always as is the picture which was directed by Andrew Davis who made The Fugitive.. It's available free w/ ads on PlutoTV.
I watched it again over the pandemic, unsure if it would hold up so many years later. It absoltely does, even wached it again this summer. It's become a favorite comedy of mine.
I'm not going for a hot take here, but I never could buy into Norman Dale's character in Hoosiers. I don't think I'm intelligent enough to say why, but something is missing there for me. I doubt it's Hackman's performance; maybe it's the way he was written or the shoehorned semi-romance with Barbara Hershey. I like the film a lot; just my opinion.
I saw Under Fire was streaming on Prime and watched it earlier today. I had never seen it but it seemed like an interesting movie. It'sa 1983 movie about 3 journalists in Nicaragua during their revolution. This war journalism nanogenre was a big thing in the early 80s with The Years of Living Dangerously, The Killing Fields, Salvador and this. It was good. Hackman was more the 3rd wheel and this was clearlty a Nick Nolte vehicle. If you like movies in the realm of war and politics and journalism, this is worthwhile watch.
For those of you that have never seen Scarecrow you should give it a shot. Hackman and Pachino were great in it. Hackman considered it one of his best films.
