Superhero Movie Mount Rushmore (1 Viewer)

I have the hardest time determining what my Top 3 MCU movies are... I'm always flipping one or another in and out from these four: Civil War, GotG, Infinity War & End Game. Today will be Infinity War since the "bad guy" won that round.

Reeves' Superman should probably be on my list, but I enjoy these other DC flicks far more these days.

I feel like an animated movie should be in here ... Big Hero 6 was a great vote up thread, but The Incredibles feel more super heroey to me...

  1. Infinity War
  2. The Dark Knight
  3. Watchmen
  4. The Incredibles

My favorites wouldn't match what are the generally accepted answers

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (very narrowly edging out Spider-Man 2)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Avengers: Infinity War
The Incredibles

I am not a fan of the Super Hero movies because there are too many of the same story from different "universes" that I never know what the hell is happening or why they are different. I just have no interest in trying to figure it out.

I mean if I want to watch Spiderman I am not even sure what movies or order the go in. Seems like it would make sense with:
  • Spiderman
  • Spiderman 2
  • Spiderman 3
But then it starts over and now he is Amazing
  • Amazing Spiderman
  • Amazing Spiderman 2
Then he just goes random (and is no longer amazing so he lost something along the way)
  • Spiderman: Homecoming
  • Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
  • Spiderman: Far from Home and then he can't even get home -
  • Spiderman: No Way Home

Batman does the same thing. Just overwhelming. Why so many versions?

Because of which studios produced them. Spidey is passed back and forth and shared by Marvel, Disney, and Sony.

And for each iteration, because Peter is supposed to be a teenager they need to get a new actor in their 20's to play him.
:oldunsure:

- Sony Pictures originally produced the early Spider-Man movies and the Amazing Spider-Man reboot series as well as the Sony Spider-Man Universe spin-offs.

- Marvel Studios produces the MCU Spider-Man films in partnership with Sony for distribution.

- Sony handles animated Spider-Verse movies separately.

How many times can you tell the same story. Seems like it should be done by now.

There are over 1000 comic book issues.

Since there's some debate, as per IMDB definition of the superhero genre

The superhero subgenre features costumed crime fighters with extraordinary abilities or powers who use them to fight against villains and protect the innocent. They often combine high-energy action sequences with themes of heroism, morality, and the struggle between good and evil
So like The Matrix?
they had revolutions but not the others

it's still a good list.

What's your take on the Wizard of Oz? There's only been about 20 of them

Only seen the original and the The Wiz. Didn't know there were 20 of them.

most of them are sequels or retellings like a muppet wizard of Oz but the one from 1939 wasn't even the original.

tell that to:

James Bond
Superman
Fantastic Four
Hulk
Batman
Probably the X-Men

Face it. Reboots are now part of life.

Money.

You really needed to ask?

It's kind of why I don't watch super hero movies very often.

Bond doesn't seem to be the same as the others. Those movies seem to be more stand alone and I don't think there are multiple movies rehashing his origin story.

Of course....I guys I should have said that was the reason I am not interested in them rather than why they do so many versions. I am in the minority for sure.

I'm actually with Gally in that I don't think we need the entire back story to be remade once a decade. That seems like overkill. I get every twenty-five or thirty years if you want to modernize it or make it contemporary, but I think even that's a stretch. I mean, did **** really change from 2002 to 2012 (they did the Spider-Man origin story all over) to where you needed to do that again?

Like, 2002 to 2012 was a blip. It wasn't like '68 and riots and campuses burning to the disco of '78. I mean, that I could see.

This was '02 to '12.

There was absolutely no need for it. Nothing had changed.

I can't speak for why the need for origin stories over again, but my understanding is because of the contracts some of the studios had to do movies every X years or they lose the rights to characters. I thought Spidey was one of those.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (very narrowly edging out Spider-Man 2)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Avengers: Infinity War
The Incredibles
Those are absolutely acceptable answers. Into the spider verse would be in my top 8 for sure, maybe 5.

I would think that when the writers are writing the script they feel compelled to include the orgin story otherwise it may feel "incomplete". In all the reboots of spiderman/fantastic 4 etc. there were never any large scale changes to the orgin story, right?

+remakes/reboots are mostly intended for NEW audiences. While most of us adults have seen a spiderman movie (or whatever) a new generation of kids have not. That works on adults too. I doubt any of you were alive the first time they made The Last of the Mohicans.

I get this point, but if you look at the release years, this answer doesn't hold up for some of these superhero reboots. Spiderman was 15 years for 3 series to reboot and start up. That is a bit much. I understand it more when it's more like the 20-30 years when they reboot something from the 80s or 90s.

the spiderman franchise is probably a little unique. There was a 5 year gap between the Sam Rami spiderman movies and the amazing Andrew Garfield ones. I could be getting my timelines and movies mixed up but I think there was something that had to do with retaining the rights to the spiderman character. Or maybe that's the reason that the Sam Rami ones got made. Or maybe it was just greed? The Tom Holland ones were made with the sole purpose of shoehorning him into the MCU.

This is correct. Spider Man's rights were sold to Sony a long time ago and there was a tremendous amount of negotiation for Marvel to get them back. Sony still owns the rights to live-action films and 'sublets' SM to Marvel for MCU crossovers and standalone films. For example, SM: Homecoming was a Marvel product distributed by Sony. I think Sony still has distribution rights and final creative control.

Huge fan of this genre as a comic book nerd.

Kick@ss <- Should be on anyones much watch list that likes this genre.
X-men <- started this entire craze
Hellboy <- trying to be different here, but Spawn also was quite good and had the better soundtrack.
TMNT - Not sure which one, but a TMNT movie deserves to be here
