I am guessing I will like them even more when all 3 are out and I can just watch them all quickly like people do for LOTR. That is how I like my blockbusters to look and sound. I've said in other posts that I don't like that Denis is spending so much time now on IP, but if there were somebody I would tag to do a big blockbuster action movie, especially with a sci-fi lean, it would be Villeneuve followed by Nolan.Dune, of course, is a great ranking. They're epic.
If mentioned a few times that I like/don't like The Social Network. It's a great work of fiction that has too much reference to the truth for comfort. It feels kinda slanderous - and I don't really care for Mark Z or his devilish creation.
If you ever watch it again, it’s kind of funny. I don’t think it was meant to be quite so serious as the plot might imply.Phantom Thread is a tough watch and I love DDL.
I like the idea of the movie, it's just tough to sit through.
From what I get in his interviews, I don't think many of his movies are meant to be too serious. He has an odd sense of humor. I say the same thing about Ari Aster. Odd dudes. Pretty sure PTA would say Phantom Thread is a dark comedy. If you ever watch it again, it’s kind of funny. 181 - Wings of Desire
Without a doubt my favorite QT movie. It just has the most heart, is the most sentimental. One of the great hangout movies of all time with an ending that I personally loved (though I acknowledge the grizzly violence of Pitt smashing a young woman's face into the mantle, telephone, etc. is much less heroic than it seemed on first watch, this is still to me a movie I will rewatch endlessly.#3: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD - 177PTS

The great romance movie of the century. Probably the most beautifully filmed movie of the century as well.
Epic for sure.Dune, of course, is a great ranking. They're epic.
I get this complaint and if it ruins the movie for someone, I can understand it. What do movies, books, tv, ,music owe to the truth? Can something capture the spirit of the truth even if the facts aren't accurate? I am not sure but when I watch it feels like a perfect movie and incredibly important. If mentioned a few times that I like/don't like The Social Network. I like it much more now that I know a bit of the backstory with Manson, Tate, Polanski, etc.. Like most QT's there are a few things that bug me, but here the positives far outweigh those issues.Without a doubt my favorite QT movie. It just has the most heart, is the most sentimental. Only one I haven't seen
An obvious pairing with Memories of Murder. Along with Silence of the Lambs and Seven make for the Mount Rushmore of detective-serial killer genre.#2: ZODIAC - 193PTS

Yeah I think it does require a little of base knowledge of the Manson crimes and the scene in Hollywood in 1969. The You Must Remember This podcast season on that is so good:I like it much more now that I know a bit of the backstory with Manson, Tate, Polanski, etc.. I did not rank It or Dr. Sleep.these guys do like their SK movies though
I think 7 out of 166 movies and one of those 7 is really mostly set in America with lots of English (Past Lives)these guys do like their SK movies though

Oh that’s funny, I still only count 3-5 of them but yeah Memories of Murder and Zodiac are very high and have a lot in common for sure.I think he meant serial killer.I think 7 out of 166 movies and one of those 7 is really mostly set in America with lots of English (Past Lives)these guys do like their SK movies though

Zodiac is on Paramout+ (4K) and Kanopy as well. Yes, that would make a great double feature. Looks like Memories is a $4 rent for 4K.Oh that’s funny, I still only count 3-5 of them but yeah Memories of Murder and Zodiac are very high and have a lot in common for sure.I think he meant serial killer.I think 7 out of 166 movies and one of those 7 is really mostly set in America with lots of English (Past Lives)these guys do like their SK movies though

ONLY 10 MOVIES LEFT!! Everything in the top 10 is at least in both of our top 40 movies. 80s has 5 top 10 movies left and I have only 3. Only twice did we have the same movie in our top 10, so it's not a surprise those are our top 2 movies for the countdown.
Here is what we have had for our top 10 movies:
@Ilov80s :
1 Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
2 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
3 Yi Yi
4 The Social Network
5 There Will Be Blood
6 Zodiac
7 In the Mood for Love
8 The Zone of Interest
9 Memories of Murder
10 City of God
KP:
1 There Will Be Blood
2 The Prestige
3 Zodiac
4 Before Sunset
5 Hereditary
6 Phantom Thread
7 Shaun of the Dead
8 Rogue One
9 The Muppets
10 Amores Perros
Lol. I was going to leave it hanging a bit, but thought that would be too cruel. You got me. I was going to chose to remain silent.![]()
The Orphanage and Downfall were on the last wave of cuts too. Easily would have been in the next 50 on my list.I figured this wouldn't include titles like Gladiator and Black Hawk Down - they're not really in the genre wheelhouse.
Omissions like The Orphanage and Downfall are mild surprises though.
Oh my goodness. It’s all subjective, but I found that movie shockingly bad.#1: LICORICE PIZZA - 196PTS

Usually I have some inkling why something garners critical or popular acclaim, but for LP? Nada.![]()
Such a visceral reaction, I couldn’t.You got me. I was going to chose to remain silent.![]()
I have slowly shifted on TWBB and No Country since they came out. I saw both on release, vastly preferred No Country but I've rewatched them both a few times since and each time TWBB kept creeping up and eventually firmly passed No Country.I have actually seen all of the top 3!
Once Upon a Time is a “historical fantasy” like Inglorious Basterds. I’ve read a lot about the era and the Manson murders so it was right in my wheelhouse.
Zodiac is brilliant is the basement scene had me on edge. It may be Fincher’s best, which is saying something.
I watched TWBB and No Country in the same day. I liked No Country better, but DDL’s performance in TWBB is one for the ages.
