The Top 164 (166) Movies of the 21st Century. On to the TOP 10!! (11 Viewers)

Serious answer is I don't like zombie horror movies much unless they are in comedy form like the 2 on my list. I would bet my next 100 would have stuff like Dead Snow over Train to Busan as well. I own it, so it would be in my top 100 horror movies of this era, but offhand I would guess it would be in the 2nd half of that list. A good movie, but not one I seem myself rewatching.

Dune, of course, is a great ranking. They're epic.

If mentioned a few times that I like/don't like The Social Network. It's a great work of fiction that has too much reference to the truth for comfort. It feels kinda slanderous - and I don't really care for Mark Z or his devilish creation.
I am guessing I will like them even more when all 3 are out and I can just watch them all quickly like people do for LOTR. That is how I like my blockbusters to look and sound. I've said in other posts that I don't like that Denis is spending so much time now on IP, but if there were somebody I would tag to do a big blockbuster action movie, especially with a sci-fi lean, it would be Villeneuve followed by Nolan.

@BLOCKED_PUNT - a follow up to that post is that I leaned HEAVILY on movies that surprised me or got a visceral reaction from me for the top 100 as some way to narrow down my huge list, and that was not the case for Train to Busan. Very good zombie movie, but it was pretty predictable and mostly elevated by the father/daughter dynamic. It didn't get a big laugh, cry, or scare from me though.

Phantom Thread is a tough watch and I love DDL.

I like the idea of the movie, it's just tough to sit through.
If you ever watch it again, it’s kind of funny. I don’t think it was meant to be quite so serious as the plot might imply.

From what I get in his interviews, I don't think many of his movies are meant to be too serious. He has an odd sense of humor. I say the same thing about Ari Aster. Odd dudes. Pretty sure PTA would say Phantom Thread is a dark comedy.

Speaking of Aster, I don't know if you or @Andy Dufresne listens to the Blank Check podcast but I was catching up and listened to Aster sitting in for the Miller's Crossing episode. They had Cregger on for Fargo and Seth Rogan on for Lebowski. Interesting episodes.

We could make a "Mt.Rushmore" of movies as we go. What an interesting list we have. I just checked the past couple countdowns @Ilov80s and I did, and with these two we will have only had 6 movies that scored over 190pts in our countdowns:

197pts - Back to the Future
196 - ??
193 - ??
192 - Silence of the Lambs
191 - Schindler's List
190 - Die Hard

IF we extend this out to movies that scored 180+ points..

188 - The Shining
185 - Unforgiven
184 - Jurassic Park
184 - Empire Strikes Back
184 - Blade Runner
183 - The Shawshank Redemption
182 - Do the Right Thing
181 - Wings of Desire

The 170pters are movies like Once Upon A Time, Spinal Tap, and Pulp Fiction. I think that is a fantastic start to any top X movies of all time list. It's no surprise we would agree more on a certain decade, and we would be more spread out tackling 25 years for one countdown. I'd guess if we did a 70s, 60s, or '59 and under countdown we would see more and more consensus at the top. Unless he is a huge fan of terrible 70s comedy movies. ;)

ETA: it also makes our strong agreement on the #2 even more surprising.

#3: ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD - 177PTS

#1 on @Ilov80s ' list :popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

#24 on KP's list and also on @The Dreaded Marco 's list
Without a doubt my favorite QT movie. It just has the most heart, is the most sentimental. One of the great hangout movies of all time with an ending that I personally loved (though I acknowledge the grizzly violence of Pitt smashing a young woman's face into the mantle, telephone, etc. is much less heroic than it seemed on first watch, this is still to me a movie I will rewatch endlessly.

Epic for sure.

I get this complaint and if it ruins the movie for someone, I can understand it. What do movies, books, tv, ,music owe to the truth? Can something capture the spirit of the truth even if the facts aren't accurate? I am not sure but when I watch it feels like a perfect movie and incredibly important.

I like it much more now that I know a bit of the backstory with Manson, Tate, Polanski, etc.. Like most QT's there are a few things that bug me, but here the positives far outweigh those issues.

Yeah I think it does require a little of base knowledge of the Manson crimes and the scene in Hollywood in 1969. The You Must Remember This podcast season on that is so good:

#2: ZODIAC - 193PTS

#6 on Ilov80s' list and #3 on KP's list
An obvious pairing with Memories of Murder. Along with Silence of the Lambs and Seven make for the Mount Rushmore of detective-serial killer genre.
How many of them are horror movies, though?? :pokey:

these guys do like their SK movies though
I think 7 out of 166 movies and one of those 7 is really mostly set in America with lots of English (Past Lives)
I think he meant serial killer.

Now we know how the dude in the album thread felt.
Oh that’s funny, I still only count 3-5 of them but yeah Memories of Murder and Zodiac are very high and have a lot in common for sure.
Zodiac is on Paramout+ (4K) and Kanopy as well. Yes, that would make a great double feature. Looks like Memories is a $4 rent for 4K.

I assume most of these are on Hulu, but we have the Disney+/Hulu bundle, and besides many of the movies on our list like Another Round and Black Swan, there were a bunch of movies I saw on there the other night that were very hard cuts.
  • Attack the Block
  • The Wailing
  • Easy A
  • Take Shelter
  • Little Miss Sunshine
  • Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
  • Palm Springs
  • The Way Way Back
  • The Host
  • The Sessions
  • Donnie Darko
  • High Fidelity
  • Old School
  • I Love You, Man

ONLY 10 MOVIES LEFT!! Everything in the top 10 is at least in both of our top 40 movies. 80s has 5 top 10 movies left and I have only 3. Only twice did we have the same movie in our top 10, so it's not a surprise those are our top 2 movies for the countdown.

Here is what we have had for our top 10 movies:

@Ilov80s :

1 Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
2 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
3 Yi Yi
4 The Social Network
5 There Will Be Blood
6 Zodiac
7 In the Mood for Love
8 The Zone of Interest
9 Memories of Murder
10 City of God

KP:

1 There Will Be Blood
2 The Prestige
3 Zodiac
4 Before Sunset
5 Hereditary
6 Phantom Thread
7 Shaun of the Dead
8 Rogue One
9 The Muppets
10 Amores Perros

Here is the update to our top 10s. I will post our full lists later.

About 10 years ago I did a top 100 countdown of decade of the 00s and a top 50 from the first 1/2 of the 10s. For fun I looked at those lists after I made this top 100. A lot of crossover and I mostly stayed on brand with the top 10s.

00s:

Eternal Sunshine
TWBB
Before Sunset
Mulholland
Let the Right One In
Zodiac
Requiem
The Prestige
No Country
Amore Perros

10s:

Her
Whiplash
Drive
Take Shelter
Before Midnight
Short Term 12
Lego Movie
Nightcrawler
Cabin in the Woods
Ex Machina

I figured this wouldn't include titles like Gladiator and Black Hawk Down - they're not really in the genre wheelhouse.

Omissions like The Orphanage and Downfall are mild surprises though.

The Orphanage and Downfall were on the last wave of cuts too. Easily would have been in the next 50 on my list.

I rewatched both Gladiator and Black Hawk Down this summer for research and neither fully clicked. I feel I like Gladiator more than BHD now, where the reverse used to be true, but I think both would be in the 200-300 range for me. I would start grabbing action movies like Bourne or MI first or lean more sci fi with Prey over those two.

#1: LICORICE PIZZA - 196PTS

#5 on Ilov80s' List and #1 on KP's list
Oh my goodness. It’s all subjective, but I found that movie shockingly bad.

Usually I have some inkling why something garners critical or popular acclaim, but for LP? Nada.

Hmmm…guess I shoulda read the next post :bag:

TWBB is great

I have actually seen all of the top 3!

Once Upon a Time is a “historical fantasy” like Inglorious Basterds. I’ve read a lot about the era and the Manson murders so it was right in my wheelhouse.

Zodiac is brilliant is the basement scene had me on edge. It may be Fincher’s best, which is saying something.

I watched TWBB and No Country in the same day. I liked No Country better, but DDL’s performance in TWBB is one for the ages.

I have slowly shifted on TWBB and No Country since they came out. I saw both on release, vastly preferred No Country but I've rewatched them both a few times since and each time TWBB kept creeping up and eventually firmly passed No Country.
