Star Wars VII, VIII, and XIX
Flaming piles of garbage, let's start there and work our way out
I never made it past the one after phantom menace. To me, the only Star Wars came out between 1977 and 1983. I have no interest in any others. All the other movies actually reduced my interest in the original 3. So yeah, the Star Wars universe is massively overrated/overhyped.
I’m a huge Star Wars fan but it’s definitely over saturated. the Sequels are ok but not great

Revenge of the Sith is an absolute masterpiece though…hands down my favorite Star Wars movie
Rogue One in 2016 holds a special place on my list.
I have the movie as high if not above Jedi, they took some actual risk in that film by layering in Gen Tarkin thru A.I. as an example
Vader literally walking down the hall as we arrive on the door step of New Hope, that one was excellent

There are parts of Phantom Menace I admire, Clones puts me to sleep every time, the love story is awkward and uncomfortable
Sith has some of the Rogue One elements and surprises but ultimately cannot overcome Hayden Christensen
It gives us a taste of what Back to the Future must have been like with Eric Stoltz before they re-shot almost the entire film again with Michael J Fox
I would have liked to see what another actor could have done.

New thread title
You're terrible

I can't agree with it but it's definitely not the worst take in here.

I mean, Mitchell Robinson isn’t the reason the Knicks can’t beat the Pacers, but he also isn’t worthy of being called the best player on the Knicks.

Revenge of the Sith? Best Star Wars movie? Uh, hell no.

"Best" and "favorite" are two different metrics.

1985 - 240M people in the United States
Back to the Future sells 55M tickets

2023 -Almost 350M people in the United States
Only 4 films sell more than 30M tickets, we'll round it to 5 and give you Oppenheimer at 29.8M tickets sold
From a % POV, lot less folks are filling up the theaters

And yes there was a time when movies would play for months and months, anyone remember Titanic?
Movies are here 1 week and streaming at home the next, no incentive to go to a movie theater and leave the comforts of your living room
And I'm sorry but most movies do not make major dough streaming on your TV (barbie was an exception) to rent at $19.99 or for $5 more you can own this piece of ****

It's the best after the original 3 (IV-VI).

Rogue One is the best after Star Wars and Empire. Jedi isn’t top-3. Sith as the next best? Sure, fair enough.

Great discussion back and forth, love the passion

-I came across this article and it references Barry Diller, Hollywood producer and worked at major studios.
It's about George Lucas and since we were discussing several of his movies...

It’s the same here. Search your feelings, you know it to be true

I rarely go to the movies anymore, I just find it more convenient to wait for them to eventually pop up somewhere on tv. But I know one thing, when I do go my chances of being struck by lightning walking from the parking lot to the movie theater are better than finding MOP inside that theater.

With the upgrade to an OLED and some incredible speakers we invested in, it is more fun to just stay home and make our own popcorn on the stove top
Our bar is cheaper and we fill it with better mixers than you pay for when you're out...soda from the bar gun :x

Just added Desperado to the Apple Library

Must be nice to be a 1%er and have a theater and bar at your house. Some of us still have to slum it at the theater once in awhile. ;)

Maybe I just haven't had the really negative theater experiences as others might have. Maybe it's because I am not the typical wealthy FFAer and my set up is pretty meh. I still think there is a magic to going to a movie in the theater. It is something that I still love doing when I can. I still have fun seeing trailers and getting excited about something else that might be coming out and even eating ****ty popcorn from time to time. I also believe it is a reason why my kids (especially the youngest) likes movies and can sit through a whole one no problem.

For me none of that is replicated at my house, besides having popcorn that isn't stale and better snacks. Can't replicate the picture, sound, and it's much harder to eliminate distractions.

All that said, I fully get and agree with what MoP is saying today and GM was saying last night - way too often I look and there is not something in the theater for ME. I will watch just about anything my kids want to go see in the theater and that is usually what I am seeing, so I am 100% part of the reason why the stuff we grumble about are in the theaters. Most of what I have paid to see in the theaters in the last decade has been Marvel, Star Wars, and animated movies. Part of what makes me grumble much less is that I stopped thinking about it in terms of "this is dumb, I can watch X movie in a month or buy it next week for X amount". For me it is a day out with the family doing something we love. Even if we over do it a little with the snacks and drop $50-60, we would easily pay that or more to do something else - be it a museum, game, admission to a park, whatever. More likely we go early for cheaper tix, take it easy on the snacks, and supplement the day off with a free hike or trip to the free zoo in town and have a fun day for $30 or so. Well worth the money, even if I am watching something I don't like. We have gotten lucky and have seen a ton of stuff that we all loved anyway like Inside Out 2, Minecraft moive, or The Wild Robot. I do draw the line at the live action Disney remakes, I have yet to watch another after seeing about 20 mins of The Jungle Book.

I might be singing a different tune in a bit since my daughter said she wants to see Karate Kid: Legends, and that I am scared to see. But we will also watch another Pixar movie this year, and I will 100% be in the theater for the new Ari Aster and PTA movies this year as well. I figure nothing else, KK will give me a reason to show her a few different Jackie Chan movies as well, so that still might be worth it.

Also, I have T-mobile and every once in a blue moon they do a $5 movie ticket deal and if it's something I want to see that seems like a good deal to me.

Theater here has discount days that often line up with my weekday off, so that I when I try to catch a movie that interests me. Problem is during the school year when I was without the kids they don't start until 1 or so, and I wouldn't be able to get back before they got home.

Can't replicate the picture, sound,
only reason I even go to theaters anymore. The spectacle of it all.
I’ll be going to see Jaws this summer when it’s released to theaters for its 50th anniversary. Now that will be an experience.
I will have to keep an eye out for that as well. I would love to see that one on the big screen.
I think it’s going to be widely released. And this will be a required snack vessel to bring along.

Yeah my setup is a 42” with the built in tv speakers so that could definitely be improved, but for probably 90% of movies I don’t think it matters (although good sound is underrated)

I also actually like the movie popcorn. Have one of those smaller theatre style poppers at home but barely use it it’s just kind of a pain

I do like watching at home though because I can pause it, grab a snack, have a cocktail whatever, but on the flip side im much more likely to grab my phone vs at a theater I’m fully engaged

And yeah crowds can be a downer, but we generally avoid late night weekend shows which seem to draw a more obnoxious crowd.

I watch most of "my" movies in the bedroom now. My tv is about the same size (maybe 46"), but i did upgrade to an OLED from Costco with some dfs winnings. Picture is great, and i moved the 4k player in there Sound is an issue, but what i did was sync it to my decent Sony headphones and watch movies that way, and that helped a ton. Both with how the movies sounded and my focus. I get sucked into movies much more now.

I guess crowds don't borher me a ton, or at least like i said lucked out not encountering terrible people. The main thing that has bothered me is the trend to have a restaurant experience at the theater and having pizzas and crap brought in. That i try to avoid and even have passed seeing favorites like Back to the Future because they are at the draft house theater thing.

Wife and I go to Tuesday night $5 movies.

For the flicks we really want the big screen treatment.

Summer is when we go the most…probably see 4-6 over the summer the sprinkle in 4-5 more so we probably now average 8-11 big screen flicks a year at $5 a ticket.

We no longer see any value whatsoever paying full boat.

Tuesday nights we typically have the theater to ourselves….for a whopping total of $10.

I was completely over the theater experience until I went to one of my local smaller theaters. The kind that has the recliners and sofas to watch on. The difference maker with this one was the food! They have a full lunch/dinner menu and hired a chef from a famous local restaurant. I recently watched the most recent Marvel move enjoying a nice NY steak and sides that would be commonplace at any nice restaurant.

But yeah over the years I’ve become very jaded over the typical movie theater experience.

I prefer dinner and a movie consecutively, not concurrently.

I love the addition of beer being served with the movies now. And I like the reserved seats and the chairs that lay back like 1st class airline seats. Although this caused me to fall asleep during Iron Claw and I got kicked out of the theater by the ushers long after the movie had ended. That was a little embarrassing. :bag:

Yeah, that wasn't a highlight of my life that I want to see again when my life passes before my eyes.

25 - Halloween

I was born in 79, so growing up in the 80s / 90s I always found Halloween to be a distant 3rd to the Nightmare and Friday series

It’s not a bad movie by any means, but it wouldn’t rate that highly in any personal horror list of mine and others definitely like it way more than I do

I sort of agree, although it wouldn't make my top 25 overrated list. I like Black Christmas just as much, which was a major influence for Halloween.

I feel like the iconic soundtrack is what sets it apart.

My thoughts exactly. The music was special and elevated the film tremendously. The first Friday 13th was solid but the rest couldn't come close to Halloween. Also Michael > Freddy

I agree but a comfy seat and drink with the movie is just fine
Agreed. Now that it's summertime, my company has "Summer Fridays" where we get off at 1pm. I tend to go watch a movie (solo) around lunchtime a few Fridays during summer. I was contemplating going to see the last Mission: Impossible tomorrow...

17 - Everything Everywhere All At Once

Counting the trend of terrible movies to win an Oscar . No idea how this got picked over Banshees.
This movie is phenomenal.

Agreed. I doubt I'm going to take many film recommendations from this Dan fellow.
Nah man I’ve got good taste I just don’t always follow the crowd

I think Boggs and The Sisters need to have a word with you
