*** Dan Lambskins Top 25 Most Overrated Movies *** A.K.A MoP Hates Hollywood (2 Viewers)

1 - The Shawshank Redemption

That’s right. Flame away if you will. Now don’t get me wrong, this is actually a pretty decent movie, unlike most of the others in this list. If I did a top 500 list I’d expect it to slot in somewhere in the bottom half

That said this movie is constantly at or near the top of Best Movie Ever lists and is nowhere close to belonging there

I mean, you might as well go out with a bang....talk about completely missing the boat here. Ouch.

So I strongly disagree with 9 of the 25. I agree with or can at least see the argument for 16 of the 25.

Do better Dan.

9 - Animal House

Sorry Boomers, but it’s not funny, at least not to people not yet eligible to collect social security

Might be the most disappointed I have ever been in a movie, for years the olds would tell me how funny this movie was. Then I finally watched it and
This will always be a favorite. But I am a boomer. For most movies the time period and context are important in evaluating them. Animal House pushed the envelope and was a forerunner for the adolescent, sexual hijinks, gross out humor that other later movies such as the Hangover, Dumb and Dumber, American Pie etc would take further.

24 - Ghostbusters

Is it comedy? Is it horror? Or just bad mix of both?

This is another one I don’t hate or anything, but just doesn’t grab me like a lot of other 80s movies do and people always seem to hold it in much higher regard than I do

I also strongly preferred The Real Ghostbusters cartoon over the movie as a kid
I'm 54 years old, and have never watched Ghostbusters.
Nothing to be proud of, Russ

Anybody wondering why Hollywood continues to manufacture tripe for mass consumption and issue sequel after sequel long after creativity has vanished from the original, wonder no more.

It’s certainly working right now. The box office numbers for this weekend’s Lilo and Stitch, Mission Impossible and Final Destination are going to be massive, definitely record breaking. One of the biggest weekends for the movies in the history of theaters.

I have these exact thoughts whenever i see all the comments about just turning off brains and wanting to be "entertained" during movies.

I do have opposite thoughts about the last couple decades and grumble about all the IP, sequels, prequels, and reboots. Then i struggle with narrowing down lists to rank and have 100s of movies i could recommend. There are a couple genres i think have been the best ever during that stretch as well. Weirdly, both are true, but what i grumble about has gotten more common in the last 5-10 years.

As someone that is entertained way too easily, I think a "good" movie strikes that balance between entertaining and intellectual. Alot of it is your personality but I find some of those more artsy/oscar bait movies so bland and boring but there's a gaggle of people that find artsy the best. Different strokes for different folks.

I'm definitely not surprised. Nor have I been in decades.

The people that keep McDonalds in business and bought all those New Kids on the Block records exist all around us.

I;ll get a McDonalds fry and milkshake every once in awhile and I did the new MI last night because big stupid Tom Cruise action movies are generally a fun night out (this one was not).

So the newest/last MI sucked?

Rudy - while this movie definitely sucks, I just don’t think it’s good enough to be included. Outside of @timschochet snd Notre Dame fans I’m not sure anyone else actually likes it
I'm looking forward to the sequel - Rudy II: Grifting Boogaloo - that follows this plucky little hero as he becomes a motivational speaker regaling people in dumpy Holiday Inn banquet rooms with inspiring tales of committing securities fraud by orchestrating a pump and dump scheme.

The last hour is amazing but there’s 2 hours before of just awful exposition.

My number one might be Hoosiers.

Maybe it’s because I saw it well after it came out but I just don’t understand the praise. It’s an ok sports movie IMO but that’s it. I didn’t care much at all for most of the players on the team. Instead of personal growth, the movie tells us that the best way to win is to get an unstoppable player to join the team. Hackman’s character was not likable at all. The love story was also forced and awkward looking on screen.

Please don't confuse performative art with taste. I'm a content creator....

The point is mass sales and popularity isn't always aligned with quality. I watched MI in a theater in 1996 and thought it was dumb. I've no interest in the other 20 of them but I'm not the target.

Tells me all i need to know about the genres when Rudy is one of the best and Tombstone is top 10.
Tombstone wouldn’t sniff my top 50 westerns.
Do you like the Costner Wyatt Earp film better than Tombstone?
Each film has its merits for me.
I haven’t seen Wyatt Earp since it came out. I wasn’t a big western fan as a kid so I didn’t much care for it but I should give it another chance. If I’m going with a movie about Earp, Doc, the Clantons, etc. I prefer My Darling Clementine. Gunfight at the O.K. Corral is pretty solid too.

I would love to see a tv series about his life because it was fascinating beyond that one story. He chased gold rushes, ran brothels, was the referee for one of the most controversial boxing fights in history and was a consultant for Hollywood westerns which ultimately reshaped his reputation from low life swindler to hero.

I was watching the season 2 finale of 1923 and was thinking about how much better that was than tombstone, and if there’s a worse western than tombstone. Then I remembered The Power of the Dog
Woof

I think Costner's movie is the better film. It's paced better, though it's too long. But at least it flows in a way that makes sense.

Tombstone is kind of a mess. Don't get me wrong - I like it a lot. It's staged more like an '80s action movie and is endlessly quotable. But having 80 different writers/directors didn't help it be a better film than it could've been.

After reading your list so far, I'd love to know what movie you do find funny. Because, well I just wonder if you laugh.
Spaceballs
Major league
Naked gun
Being There
Happiness

Those are all some of my favorite comedies off the top of my head

saw the new MI movie this weekend and they had a preview for a remake of Naked Gun. was disappointed in just seeing the preview. have a feeling I'm gonna hate the movie.

Not even sure Shawshank is a Top 10
Stephen King adaptation, let alone one of the best movies of all time

The Shining, Misery, the Mist, Green Mile, Pet Semetary, Cujo all better off the top of my head
Maximum Overdrive too

Pet Semetary and Maximum Overdrive are pretty awful adaptations.

I will give you that The Shining, Misery and The Green Mile are all fantastic. Doesn't mean they're better than Shawshank.

Kubricks shining >>>>>>>>>than the 1997 mini series. And the mini series followed the book more closely iirc.

Dreamcatcher might have been the worst screen adaptation of a King story.

I don't think a lot of Kings material translates to the big screen well. I thought Shawshank was really well done though.....also the Green Mile.

Same - my friends all make fun of the fact I do not like this movie. They all love it.

I did not buy Hackman's chemistry with Marsha Mason or how he won over the team. It was a tough watch for me.

Shawshank Redemption wasn't even a stand-alone novel. It was from Different Seasons, one of four and when I read it, the stand-out novella in there (for me) was Apt Pupil. I didn't expect Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption to turn into the incredible movies they were when I read them, but both movies are better than the novellas by far and hold up very well on re-watch.

I never saw the movie Apt Pupil but the reviews were terrible. I'm sure Subway Dan has it in his top 3 of all time.

I’ve seen it wasn’t great, Shawshank definitely better but Stand By Me >>>> Shawshank for sure

Pet Semetary was head-spinningly stupid. Great book, gigantic disaster of a movie.
The remake/reboot was even worse.

I had no idea there was one. Jesus.

I mean....it could be playing above my head in a dental chair and I'd choose to close my eyes and sleep. Zero interest.
