*** Dan Lambskins Top 25 Most Overrated Movies *** A.K.A MoP Hates Hollywood (1 Viewer)

You forgot Lincoln, The Fablemans, anything else Spielberg has done in the last 20 years and everything by Wes Anderson.

Have not seen either of those but Hugo was a glaring omission although I shut it off
Thoughts on Gangs of New York?
Loved it. Haven’t sent it in probably 25 years
We agree way more on the top 10 than the first 15. Some of my favorites are in there like Arrival and Contact.

Top 10 I can get on board with all but #1. You replace that with a Goodfellas and I am with you. Tropic Thunder I like a lot, but it suffers from too much Stiller in the back 1/2. Black Panther I thought was good, but nothing I'd fight you over either. I tried watching a couple Marvel movies recently and couldn't get through much. Don't tell trip, but I'd rather watch probably 2 dozen animated movies over any of the Marvel movies, comic book movies, or most action in general.

What’s this now? Love goodfellas

Avatar probably

It’s good on the big screen sucks otherwise

The Holdovers
In Bruges

1 - The Shawshank Redemption

That’s right. Flame away if you will. Now don’t get me wrong, this is actually a pretty decent movie, unlike most of the others in this list. If I did a top 500 list I’d expect it to slot in somewhere in the bottom half

That said this movie is constantly at or near the top of Best Movie Ever lists and is nowhere close to belonging there

From my son: this is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard. It’s nearly a perfect movie. Who watches this movie and walks away saying “‘meh, this wasn’t that good”?

Follow up from him: “why doesn’t it belong on best ever lists? What specifically don’t you like about it?”

Oh my

Princess bride better be top 5
Didn’t make the list but it was in consideration. It’s actually grown on me over the years
The first few times I attempted to watch it, I fell asleep. To be fair, for some of those I was drunk.

I have successfully watched it twice since then, and I like it well enough but I don't understand why it has the status that it does.

19 - The Talented Mr Ripley

This one might be a stretch because it’s more for Matt Damon’s acting performance, but IIRC that was the main draw of the film? He was supposed to be able to sound like other people but in the movie when he was trying to imitate them he never did

Been awhile since I’ve seen this one but i remember me and my good buddy always trashing it
I didn't like this at all and felt icky after watching it.

4 - Caddyshack

similar to Animal House but even less funny. Maybe if I was old or liked golf? One of the rare movies, especially comedies where the sequel is far superior to the original
Thank you. I mention in every relevant thread that this movie is dreadful outside of Bill Murray's scenes. Chevy Chase in particular -- he's completely wooden here.

I've always liked Animal House, though. The music helps.

3 - Mad Max - Fury Road

it’s just driving back and forth in the desert for like 2 hours. With a rock band for some reason. And people love this movie
Sorry but I just don’t get it
I've never gotten the love for this one either. It does have some great visuals. The story and characters don't grab me though. The action scenes aren't anything special, just car chases and explosions. Some of the characters are too bizarre. I liked the story for the Furiosa movie more and generally preferred it. Neither is a top tier action movie for me though.

It's a reasonable list overall. Any list of popular movies you don't like is going to get a lot of disagreeing opinions given the nature of the list. Mine would have a bunch of gangster movies on it, I just don't like that kind of movie.

I agreed with most of your early picks - Birdman, Talented Mr. Ripley, Training Day, Barbie
But your top 10 is a big disagree for me.
But it was fun reading your thoughts on these.
BTW, Spaceballs is one of the worst comedies ever. Especially for a Director who has made many other good ones.

I liked Bridesmaids, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Caddyshack, and Wedding Crashers. You have no funny bone.

Regarding Training Day, it was bad but I thought everyone thought is was bad so how could it be overrated?

You replace that with a Goodfellas and I am with you.
What is WRONG with you?
Many things.

I have come around on it more, but that movie, along with the 70s comedies, have been main ones I dont get the love for personally but see all over lists, especially in the FFA. Glengarry would be another example, and as seen in our 80s countdown, Raiders would be another. In general the masses like action and sports movies way more than i do as well.

Also I kept this at 25, I felt like trying to get to 50+ would just lead to me being disingenuous

But to give a little flavor here are some of the ones that didn’t make the final cut

Rudy - while this movie definitely sucks, I just don’t think it’s good enough to be included. Outside of @timschochet snd Notre Dame fans I’m not sure anyone else actually likes it

Boyhood - I get that it was an ambitious project, but again just not sure this one is rated highly enough to include. Complete bore though

Super Troopers - I don’t think I’ve actually seen it, I’ve just heard my friends quote it so often I feel like I have. Ineligible

I Love You, Man - has 2 strikes right off the bat (Jason Segel and Rush). I just don’t think this is good enough to be included

Pineapple Express - only made it through about 30 minutes before I turned it off so ineligible. Maybe I need to get baked and try again but I have a pretty low tolerance for Seth Rogan these days

12 Years A Slave - one of the worst best picture winners, certainly of the 21st century. I think I fell asleep for part of it

Superman - specifically the Christopher Reeves one, but I don’t think I’ve actually ever seen the entire movie. But you could include any incarnation, there has never been a good Superman movie.

Will get started on the top 25 a little later
Stinks like sex in here...

Dude, you haven't seen Super Troopers? I'm disappointed in you Dan.

People love Training Day. Denzel is great in it but the movie itself is silly. Don’t care for it.

I'm not Tim nor a Notre Dame fan. But this movie really resonates to me as the ultimate underdog on a football team.

24 - Ghostbusters

Is it comedy? Is it horror? Or just bad mix of both?

This is another one I don’t hate or anything, but just doesn’t grab me like a lot of other 80s movies do and people always seem to hold it in much higher regard than I do

I also strongly preferred The Real Ghostbusters cartoon over the movie as a kid
I'm 54 years old, and have never watched Ghostbusters.

It sounds like films with alpha-male energy in the forefront aren't your thing. But you like the first two Godfather movies, yes?

I'm 54 years old and I'm not sure I know IRL anyone my age who hasn't seen Ghostbusters. 🤔

23 - Bridesmaids

Women talking dirty and being gross is funny I guess? Im just not a big fan of modern mainstream comedy from that era and i remember being sold that this was one of the funniest movies ever. Its just ok IMO
Did anyone actually like this movie????
yes but I don't think anyone here
People dont like that movie? It’s funny

I liked it. It was funny.

Both do feature a lot of dudes yelling. Yeah, I loved the first two Godfathers - 1 slightly more than 2.

So one of the best sports movies of all time and arguably the greatest superhero movie of all time.

Don't quit your day job, Dan.

25 - Halloween

I was born in 79, so growing up in the 80s / 90s I always found Halloween to be a distant 3rd to the Nightmare and Friday series

It’s not a bad movie by any means, but it wouldn’t rate that highly in any personal horror list of mine and others definitely like it way more than I do

Arguably the greatest horror movie of all time. We're off to an extremely rough start here.

21 - Arrival

I like Denis Villeneuve

I like Sci-Fi

yet I found this very boring despite its getting high praise in the sci-fi community

Maybe I just didn’t get it or had the wrong expectations. One I might need to revisit

Ummm, no. Top 20 Sci Fi all time and arguably one of the best Sci Fi endings ever.

20 - Wedding Crashers

Similar to Bridesmaids, just a big meh from me

20 years later I can barely think of 1 memorable scene from this, yet it was constantly being touted as one of the funniest movies ever

Another big miss. I don't know that it's rated terribly high, but certainly not overrated.

16 - Edge of Tomorrow

Sci-fi with Tom Cruise and Emily Blount and they keep dying and repeating the day during an alien invasion or something

didn’t care for it at all but I see this one pop up on underrated movie lists a lot when in fact it’s the opposite

Top 10 Sci Fi all time. this list is borderline catastrophic.
