The 101 Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Movies of All Time: 1. Interstellar (2 Viewers)

Signs - Well made and well acted, but if you think about the premise for more than a few seconds it just becomes so ****ing stupid. Aliens come to a planet made overwhelmingly of their kryptonite and they then stand on barn roofs for no reason? Really, really stupid. I probably wouldn't put it in the top 100.
My friend went to an early screening where there was a Q&A with Shamalat (sp?) and some one asked him after “why would the aliens go to a planet 2/3 covered in water if it could kill them” - he answered (paraphrasing) that he didn’t give a reason because he didn’t think it was necessary but his thoughts were that they may have never encountered water and wouldn’t know it was deadly to them or that they were just so desperate, they took their chances. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Before everyone posts about it, I did mention one movie in the beginning that is classic that I would not be including, and before everyone posts about it here it is.

Clockwork Orange. Sorry, this one is the cinematic equivalent of nails on a chalkboard for me. The setting, stupid lingo no one can understand, it just hits the wrong nerve for me. I know I'm in the monority here, and it's fine.
That's not a great movie either.

You omitted Metropolis. :stalker:
Also left out A Trip to the Moon. Though admittedly, some might find it just a tad dated.

Signs - It's not just water, it's water coupled with faith - i.e. holy water.
Except, you know, the literal post above you quoted the writer/director and he didn't say that.
His point is that it's not relevant to the story. Make up your own reason.

Why do thieves steal money from banks protected by security guards?

Why do humans snorkel when they could drown?

Maybe the aliens only react to water of a certain PH level that they identify by placing "land here" signs.

Who cares? - It's like six seconds of the movie. They're a MacGuffin and their biology is not relevant to the story.

1. Cop out for him not thinking his plotline though. I'm not willing to just ignore common sense. And I frankly shouldn't have to make up stuff to fix a plot hole. That's the writer, editor, and director's job.

2. Because banks have a **** ton of money in them and therefore it's worth the risk/challenge.

3. Humans aren't moving to a snorkel only to survive planet. And I didn't get the sense here that these aliens were just taking a vacation.

4. Wat

5. I care. It's a really stupid plot. Ruined, at least for me, the several positives (tension, acting) of the movie.

Maybe you get it after all.

Very little overlap with mine. That’s what I love about the genre. So many different tastes, it’s so much more subjective than other generes.

And mine will by more geared to sci-fi and not fantasy.

More like Interstella 5555, amirite?
I could be way off, but if this is a Pennsylvania 6-5000 call out I approve bigly.

It’s the Daft Punk anime they just re-released for one night in theaters about an intergalactic band that is kidnapped by evil record execs on earth who can travel space and time by casting spells. It is set to the music of Discovery.

It isn’t that great but the music is top-notch stuff.

Love this. I'd probably have something similar!

Wall-E - for an animated Disney movie, this was fantastic. Probably a top five all-time animated movie.
Until the humans show up. Then it's just a run of the mill Disney film.
It was a very sweet movie until they worked the sedentary fatty humans into it - but in the movies defense they never would have kept the kids attention If the entire movie stayed in the first act.

I've tried a few times now with this movie. I just feel like it is a stupid explanation to a question I wasn't asking about the franchise anyway.

Yeah. they also probably couldn't have gotten it to feature length without doing something else.

First half as a "short" though? Fantastic.

@Scoresman - I thought about my disconnect with the ending more and what I didn't post above is that I do not like adult Murph at all. I can not comprehend being pissed at a parent in that situation for decades, especially when you are working for the people who sent him up and you know wtf is going on. The sequence after the wave planet gets me because of his son's videos and me being upset that Murph didn't have a video. I just have never liked that she only seem to come around to her dad and what he was trying to do only when she thinks he was communicating with her.
I found when my dad died that I had been holding a flawed history of our relationship for my entire adult life. I just set an opinion at about 17 years old and never interrogated it. I thought he hadn't done anything with me other than take me fishing, which was his hobby, not mine. Then he died and I went through pictures and added back in some trips to Denali and Homer that I just had omitted for no reason I can think of. I wouldn't say I was pissed at my dad, just annoyed that he never went to my sports or threw a ball with me. He did other things, I should have remembered that.

Rewatched Interstellar because of this thread.

Better than I remembered, but also more reliant on the M Knight Shamalang moment too. Wouldn't ever put it 1st or even top 10, but a very worthy inclusion.

It’s funny. I’m terrible at identifying the twist in his movies, but in this one I kind of suspected it right away. I wonder if that affects the experience. For me, the twist has nothing to do with what makes the movie great.

Interesting list. I also have Blade Runner 2049 higher than the original but I don't think that is a common opinion. The original is great in its own way but Denis did a fantastic job making 2049 feel like the world I pictured when reading the book.
