BP's list of 100 good or decent fantasy movies: we done (1 Viewer)

2. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

STAR WARS
Episode X
THE REDEMPTION OF BP

I am a HUGE Star Wars nerd and have loved them ever since I first saw them. For a long time now I've wanted to I've wanted to sit down and watch all the Star Wars films in order just to refresh myself and give a final critique but even without reviewing them I think that I can safely say that 5 of the first 6 movies are great. When I die please make sure that they play Binary Sunset at my funeral. Great films, great music, I guess the only question is if #1 will be any good...

but before I reveal the #1 let me give my final thoughts.

I think I may have overpromised a bit. I was just pretty excited to do this but I wasn't fully prepared and in hindsight, I should have spent more time watching movies BEFORE I committed to doing this. So sorry for the premature posting.

I did have 2 ulterior motives though. First, I wanted to show that there are more than 26 decent fantasy movies (and that both fantasy and sci-fi deserve their own category), while I do think there is a bit of a drop off, I think I definitely succeeded at that. The second is to spotlight some lesser know but still good movies.

As I mentioned, other than movies that I hadn't seen before, I was doing this mostly by memory so things could have been different had I rewatched the vast majority of this list which is funny because at the time I started this I DIDN'T really want to rewatch everything but now I do want to rewatch to see how accurate I was.

I had compiled my list but I moved some movies around so Big got lost in the shuffle. Some other movies that I had on my initial list but I decided to cut were

Sucker Punch
Saint
Underworld
Oz the Great and Powerful

Ugetsu wasn't on my list since I watched it after the fact and by this point I had already started posting my list and I didn't really want to take anything off. 2 other movies that I wanted to watch and should have watched were Wings of Desire and A Matter of Life and Death. I'm thinking that I should just have this as a running list that I'll update periodically.

Obviously, this list omits movies that I haven't seen and therefore I don't really think its as authoritative as I would have liked it to have been but I do think that I've done an adequate job and this is a decent primer for anyone that would like to do a better job.

I will get to the Aubry Plaza movie that ilove80s told me about and Stay Tuned. Also, Something Wicked This Way Comes.

What other movies should be on this list? What movies (from this list), if any, do you want to see?

1. The Lord of the Rings trilogy

BP says: I really debated which one I wanted as n1, this or Star Wars. As I mentioned above, huge Star Wars fan, but this movie just feels more fantasy than Star Wars. Several years ago, I had wanted to start collecting DVDs and while I don't have an extensive collection its quality. (well maybe some aren't) So these are some of the few I have and I think that says alot. I really like Peter Jackson as a film maker and I think these movies are just tremendous.

Thank you for joining me on my Adventure Epic.

I enjoyed it. I think the challenge is that this category is loosely defined and has too much crossover with more easily defined genres like horror and scifi.

Some omissions:
Big Trouble In Little China
Planet of the Apes
The Crow
The Wiz
Starman
Clash of the Titans
Groundhog Day
Runaway

And of course... Eraserhead

I agree with you,

I did watch the crow for this list and I didn't really care for it that much. I think you could make an argument that it deserved to be on it more than X but I have bad taste.

I watched groundhog day years ago but I don't remember it that well and didn't want to list something I barely recall.

Planet of the apes is not listed as fantasy though. Ditto Starman and Runaway.

I will add Eraserhead and Big Trouble In Little China to my "movies to watch" list. thanks man

I wonder if Stay Tuned makes BP's list.
It's leaving Tubi so I decided to watch it and yeah, I think it's a decent little watch. Will I/would I have ranked this? Maybe...if I did it it'll be in the 90's or 80's at best. I really enjoy low tier family comedys like this where I can just sit back and relax.
