The Bills Running Game (1 Viewer)

The Bills' running attack produced two 100-yard rushers for the first time since 1996, with Fred Jackson having 115 and Marshawn Lynch adding 107.
Bills RB Fred Jackson rushed 15 times for 115 yards in Week 14. He also caught a pass for six yards.Jackson had 16 touches to Marshawn Lynch's 23, as the Bills grabbed the lead early and ran often. Jackson looked great, though, showcasing his speed and a nice ability to step out of tackles. He should continue to have a decent role in Buffalo's backfield, despite Lynch's return.
RUNNING BACKS (A) — Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson showed what a potent 1-2 combination they can be. OK, their 107 yards and 115 yards, respectively, came against the NFL’s worst defense against the run. What made their day impressive is that Lynch had missed three weeks with a severe high-ankle sprain and Jackson was fourth on the depth chart until a week ago.

It was Miami, but Jackson looked good in Washington too & great in the preseason. Nice blitz pickup on the Evans TD too.

Jauron said as much (that he'd continue getting carries) in his postgame too.

This just shows how stupid coaches are though. Why Fred Jackson wasn't given an opportunity before this is beyond me. He was great in preseason two seasons ago, looked awesome in NFLE and had a great preseason this year. So the Bills proceed to promptly stick him on the backburner and do nothing at all with him until their hand was forced. He should have been getting carries since Week 1 instead of Anthony Thomas.

Marshawn Lynch: Figures to Lose Some Carries to Jackson - 12/10/2007 10:36:04 AM Update: Moving forward coach **** Jauron has indicated Lynch (ankle) is still the featured back, but Fred Jackson will receive a good portion of the workload. "Marshawn will probably get a little more, but just a little more," Jauron told the Bills official site. "It's one of those deals where you can go with the hot guy. You have a rotation, but if one of them is hotter than the other you just go with them for a while and see where it leads us. I was really impressed with both of them."Recommendation: The good news for Lynch backers is that he looks pretty close to full health after missing three weeks with a high ankle sprain. He ran for 107 yards in Sunday's win. The bad is that the Bills have a hot running back on their hands behind Lynch in Fred Jackson, and they'll continue to let the two promising backs get their work in. We wouldn't go overboard just on one statement by Jauron, because with Lynch feeling better and the team clawing for a playoff spot, he'll probably be the main guy. But don't expect Lynch to get 90-95 percent of the carries -- as he did earlier in the season -- until Jackson cools down.
Lynch-Jackson Duo Shows Promiseby Chris Brown, Lead Journalist Last Updated: 12/10/2007 10:35 AM ETWith 1:38 remaining in a game that was heavily favoring the Bills, Marshawn Lynch while standing on the sideline waved Fred Jackson over to him from the huddle during Miami's third and final timeout. Lynch, who had already rumbled for 107 yards on the ground, had a few words of encouragement for Fred Jackson who had 93 yards rushing."I told him to go get his money man," said Lynch. "He knew what time it was."On the next play Jackson picked up a first down on 3rd-and-4 that would allow Buffalo to kill the clock in their 38-17 victory over the Dolphins. By the end of the game Jackson had 115 rushing yards marking the first time the Bills had a pair of backs each crack the century mark in the same game. The last duo to turn the trick was Thurman Thomas (107) and Darick Holmes (122) against Washington in 1996."Going in we wanted to run it," said head coach **** Jauron. "We thought we could run it. We ran it really effectively with both Fred and Marshawn."While the idea of a one-two running back punch with Jackson and Lynch seems like a new discovery, it's something that both backs have discussed with each other for a while. "That's that two-headed monster that we've been talking about me and Fred," said Lynch. "It's always great to have somebody on the side where you don't have to worry if he's going to make the plays and go out there and play freely."Jackson never really had an extended opportunity until Lynch went down with a high ankle sprain. The Division III product always felt like he could make a difference, but knew he had to wait for opportunity to finally knock."It's definitely tough because you want to be out there and you want to help your team," said Jackson. "We had some struggles at times. So it was definitely tough, but I knew I had to wait my turn and I knew once I got my chance I had to take advantage of it. So I was able to make some plays in the first couple of games I got in and we'll where it goes from now."Where it sounds like its going is a true two-back tandem that both Lynch and Jackson envisioned."We like this," said Jauron. "We really like this. We were talking about it coming in and the way it worked there's no reason why wouldn't stay with this."

The latest story about the two headed monster and Jauron indicating that it will continue is VERY interesting. That sound you hear is the air filling up the Freddy Jackson balloon because this guy is rising fast. At a minimum now he is a backup who has shown he can carry the rock and catch it very well; moreover, he will continue to get ample opportunity to show his talents. So eventhough Lynch is the top dog, Jackson will be worth owning as more than just a backup but as a guy who gets regular PT. And if he keeps this up Buffalo won't be able to keep him because someone will bring him in to be their featured running back. This guy is for real. I am starting to think that the place to find late round and undrafted FA rookie gems is in the small schools. There are talented guys there who just don't get noticed by the scouts and so they get overlooked.

against Cleveland, in bad weather, you have to LOVE that Buffalo running game! Jackson should once again post great numbers, even as a 'backup' RB..
