Lions | Marinelli says Bailey is riding the bike; team figuring out his role

Wed, 17 May 2006 15:47:31 -0700

Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli said LB Boss Bailey (knee) is present at the team's organized team activities, but that he is on the sideline riding the bike. When asked if Bailey would be the middle linebacker Marinelli replied: "We'd like to look at him still at the middle and the 'will,' looking at both spots. You just don't want to lock guys in yet. Let's see how they work and do some of those things but, I mean, he could be a guy we could look at as the 'mike' backer position."

4th LB, backing up both Lehman and Sims?
The lineup sounds like...WLB: Sims

MLB: Bailey

SLB: Lehman

If Bailey would be moved to WLB, Lehman would probably move to MLB and Sims would be the SLB...IMO. Man, talk about a fantasy ripple.

Lions | Marinelli discusses where J. Davis fits inWed, 24 May 2006 17:15:22 -0700Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli discussed where he anticipates LB James Davis playing during his press conference Wednesday, May 24. Marinelli said, "He could be a strong-side and a weak-side (linebacker) depending on the formation. If it's a 4-3 look, he's on the open-end bubble. If it's an under-front, he's on the tight end."
Guessing this means:4-3 - WLB3-4 - SLB

I would assume the same.I wonder if Davis is practicing with the 1st-team in place of Lehman?? If so, I wonder who's playing SLB while Davis is manning the weakside?? Sims owners better hope Lehman gets off the stationary bike.

There won't be any 3-4 looks in a base Tampa-2 defense. I'm confused why Marinelli would switch responsibilities in a straight 4-3 front versus and undershifted 4-3 front, though. I've been looking for information about Marinelli's personal philosphies and haven't found anything of note. In fact, I'm still looking for the original source of this quote to see if there's any context that would help.Right now, I think this is just a confusing quote. The base Tampa-2 usually lines up in an 4-3 under-shifted front anyhow (think Warren Sapp as the UT in the mid-late 90s). So my guess is that Davis will line up over the TE as the SLB a great majority of the time.

The way the quote reads almost sounds like a Nick Saban hybrid 3-4 scheme - to my knowledge Marinelli and Saban have no connection.

Anybody else have any thoughts? I'll keep my eye open, but for now, I don't think this affects anyone's value too much.

Lions | Bailey won't return until training camp

Fri, 26 May 2006 20:50:39 -0700

Tom Kowalski, writing for the Sporting News, reports Detroit Lions LB Boss Bailey (ankle) won't take the field until the start of training camp, but when he does he'll be moved from the strong side to the middle. In the team's cover 2 defense, it's imperative to have a middle linebacker who can get deep quickly and has the agility to play the pass, and Bailey has those skills. However, the Lions say they won't nail down any of the starting linebacker jobs until they see how the players develop in camp.

Lions | Marinelli unknown if Lehman will be healthy for camp

Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli did not say if LB Teddy Lehman (foot) will be ready for the start of training camp, instead saying that he wanted him to get healthy first before making a decision.
