The Demise of the Toy Store (1 Viewer)

I wonder if they will close all of their stores, or just use this as a way to close a bunch of old ones.  They built a nice one near me that can't be older than 2-3 years.  It has a giant Lego Hulk, and animatronic Dinosaurs that roar.  Pretty cool for kids.

Am pretty sure they will shut down the whole thing this time around.  They already downsized a few years ago.

Love my local toy store. Probably in 5-7 times a year for Christmas and birthday gifts. Haven’t been in TRU in 5+ years.  We have two thriving small bookstores while the borders has been closed and empty for almost 15 years.

I don't go very often (don't have kids and don't read much these days), but we've got a local bookstore and toy store in one with a popular cafe that does really well. The place has been around for about 40 years, and seems to be a good example of how local businesses have the ability to adapt to survive and meet consumer needs in ways that the chains sometimes cannot.

Bump.  Apparently I missed this and Nutter Butter is very upset I started a new thread.  Toys R Us has informed its employees that it's closing.

What a bummer. I love Toys R Us.

My favorite Toys R Us story was a simple shelving mistake. I was there to pick up a new pack of M.U.S.C.L.E. figures, and I noticed something odd behind a few other toys on the shelf. It looked familiar, but I figured I was remembering wrong, or it was some sort of re-release. Nope.

It was Mego Hulk a doll from the 70s. I’m a collector, so I recognized it right away.  It must’ve been hidden somewhere in their storeroom for years, and some worker found it and put it on the shelf without looking closely.  I threw it in the cart, gave my mom the “don’t say a thing” look, and ran the cart to checkout. It had been hand-marked down to $.99. I still have it with my other collectibles.

I love MUSCLE figures more than life it self. I can still smell their distinctive rubber/plastic scent in my mind.

We went to toys r us on saturday to spend my sons last gift cards and i was telling my son all about muscle things.

I've gone through a store closure before and the crap you go through is beyond words. Those employees
have my sympathy. The corporate exec's- not so much.

Can they do That? Not honor gift cards?
I don't see why not.  They've done a good job of not honoring gift cards for years.  My local TRU never accepts gift cards (for some dumb reason), so I purchased with them online.

I still own a bunch of MUSCLE figures.  Unfortunately the stupid ring that they made for it would never last more than a day any time I bought one though.
