The Dictator trailer

Based on Zabibah and the King — the romance novel allegedly authored by former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein — the film follows an heroic tyrant “who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” Co-starring Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, J.B. Smoove, and John C. Reilly, the film is set to open wide May 11th.

hmmm.. I can't believe anyone older than 17 thinks this looks good

I've seen a bunch of the previews and nothing made me  once...

The hundred meter dash and the pistol didn't even garner a smile or chuckle?? Shoot, even obvious punch lines crack me up if presented with the right timing and style and that scene is one of them.

nope.. actually garnered a "WTF???" Reaction...And I am one that LOVE'S dumb, stupid, don't have to think hard humor..

But this Movies type of "humor" is just a big :whoosh: to me..

I can't see how people would want to spend $8+ to see it in the theater.

Too each their own I guess..

I agree with snogger. The commercials don't give me much hope. I loved Ali G and Borat but I haven't been very impressed with his work in scripted stuff.

You like mature, introspective, thoughtful comedies?
Are you saying that is what this is.. or asking the type of comedy's I like :confused:Comedy's in my "wheelhouse" ... My cousin Vinny, Blazing saddles, Hangover 1, CaddyShackThere are others, but that will give you some idea..

I thought Borat was brilliant but this looks terrible. I fear he is a one-shtick pony and it is all but played out. If it gets good reviews I will be happily surprised.
Sacha's Bruno character blows and The Dictator may too, but Ali G was kind of funny back in the day.

You guys that didn't even get a chuckle out of these lines in the trailer:

"Bad news. It's a girl. Where's the trash can?"

What do you think of America so far? "I like it, but I want to destroy it."

I'd agree if it was a little indy drama. But one thing about comedies: they're funnier with a group of people.
I saw Borat opening night. The audience was amped, the laughter was contagious, and it made an otherwise awesome movie that much better.
Something About Mary was an interesting case. Good comedy, but a lot better with a group of people.

The Bruno goes to Alabama skit is gold.
That was one of the ballsiest things I have seen from a performer. Some of those people wanted to cause him serious bodily harm.

I thought the Borat movie was hilarious, and I love his old Ali G material, but the Bruno movie was incredibly stupid, and this looks awful as well.

:lmao: Thanks for the tip. That was good.
I think Bruno is vastly underrated. It is the best thing Cohen has ever done, and one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Of course, it certainly is one of those movies that "isn't for everyone".

Big fan, but Bruno literally sucked and, as great an idea as this is - esp if the Hussein novel thing is true - what ive seen makes me worry that SBC is near a Sandlerness of self-parody. And, i cant remember the wording, but it's never good when the "rave review" cited in the release-week ad is of the "meets the minimum daily adult requirement now set by the US govt" variety that the Dictator promo has. I'm afraid that Cohen's version of the Kazakh national anthem being played at an equestrian award ceremony could be his biggest laugh of the year.

Ali G Show was the best thing he did. Of course it had Borat and Bruno, so it's all related.

That kind of stuff doesn't make me chuckle. I think it's well written edgy comedy, but not haha funny like some of his other stuff.

It was pretty funny. I'd say it's a wait-for-video. The critics who called it inconsistent were right.. sometimes it's hilarious and sometimes it just falls flat on its face. But it's definitely entertaining if you're into Cohen's other work at all.

Agree with the above

Pretty sure it doesn't cost a billion dollars to see a film in the theater. Just looked at the average price is $7 and change. Don't blow a bunch of money on their food and drinks and you'll be fine. I always stop at a convenience store and get candy and beer. It's as much about the pain in the ### of the line at the movies as it is that they don't sell beer.
