I tried looking for the thread "Thank you, Eli!" that I posted a couple years ago but it was trimmed. In that thread I pointed out what had to be factored into the trade was the Giants signing of Plaxico Burress, who they were essentially able to sign because they didn't have their 2005 1st round pick. The deal worked out to Rivers + Merriman + Kaeding + Oben = Eli + Burress.
The signing of Burress seems cheap now (6 years/$25M) but was expensive at the time. His time with the Giants has been mixed because of his inconsistency - looking dominant one game and disappearing the next. He was essentially MIA in 5 of the Giants wins this year. However, after two disappointing playoff games against the Bucs and Cowboys he came up huge against the Packers and made up for a lackluster SB with the game-winning TD.
4 years later, the trade has worked out for both teams. For the Giants it led to them having one of the best post-seasons in history and for the Chargers it has helped them build a title contender themselves. Eli has certainly proven to be a clutch player and it will be interesting to see how the rest of his career plays out.
