Kinda where I am. These AI machines create their own languages that we don't even understand. These machines are only version 1.0 - once they become self aware, they'll have zero use for us and we'll be the threat.
Yep.  Once they become the smartest creatures on earth they will do to us, what we've done to all other animals less intelligent than ourselves.

So, they'll either (1) Put us in little cages, feed us twice a day, and let their snotty-nosed AI babies poke and prod us all day, or (2) They'll make us fight to the death for their entertainment.

I think there's just too many of us to eliminate completely (unless the sun explodes or the ozone layer gets jacked up).  I'm quite sure we'll have some mass kill-offs due to disease, famine, and water shortages in the next 500 years though.

We're like cockroaches, you can knock us back but you can't get all of us.

There will be mass casualties from things like diseases and supervolcanoes which are inevitable, and possibly nuclear war. And AI will change humanity as we know it. But human extinction is unlikely in the near future (as in, millennia), and certainly not in our lifetimes. If we're just looking within our own lifetimes, the biggest threats are automation putting millions out of work, climate change, and nuclear war.

Nuclear war and environmental issues are things humanity is capable of dealing with. Whether we will or not, I don't know (my faith isn't real high) but we at least have some understanding of what the issues are and what would have to be done to prevent disaster.

But we have very little grasp on what we might be dealing with in terms of artificial superintelligence. It could happen really soon, or a long time down the road, or never. It could solve all our problems or kill us all. It's fascinating and exciting and terrifying.

im pretty worried about mother nature pissing of john wick and then he will say im thinkin im back and beat up the earth until there is nothing left but a pile of space dust and john wick and that will mean that somewhere john wick is still out there and hes still pissed ps i liked the movie john wick a lot take that to the bank bromigos

:scared: if he survives in JW3, start hiding money.

This is not impressive. Twins (and trips, etc.) do this all the time when they're babies. None of them have grown up to kill off the human race. Besides, it wasn't even a language. They came up with a shorthand when talking together. People who spend a lot of time together do that. It's not worth getting frightened over.

Sounds like something an artificially intelligent robot would say. I've got my eye on you, bub.

Only because Zigfried Hitler drowned at ze ol' swimming hole back in 'aught 3.

Overpopulation is the root cause of a lot of the other issues people consider species enders. So I voted other for overpopulation. We're too stupid and hung up on anachronistic religious nonsense to curtail our own needless rampant breeding, which will eventually wipe out our resources and imbalance our ecosystems to levels unsustainable for human inhabitance.

Humans are dumb.  Life for us will end some day, and the cause of it will be directly related to the choices we make as a species.

Mother nature can f### things up, but it won't end us.  We will end us.

I voted other though maybe could have went with environmental issues? Anyways, a solar flare will eventually end us. Humans are too dependent on tech and the interwebz. A good shot from the sun will knock us back to the dark ages. Nobody will have a clue how to survive, only the prepared will make it. Could happen anytime at all, so I just went with a complete guess of 250-500 years.

The real reason things won't end in the next 250 years is because that means I got to live in like the best .1% of our species time here.

I'm not that lucky at anything ever

Also, failure to clone Salma Hayek would likely result in the end of all life on earth. I'm assured that top men are working on it though.

Sure, that's what happened to the dinosaurs and all the species before us that have gone extinct. Not that they couldn't adapt to changes in their environment, but rather because they decided to kill themselves off instead. And that's why the planet is now only inhabited by creatures smarter than humans, who are the next species stupid enough to kill ourselves.

"Other" and "500-1000" years.

Earth grows tired of the shenanigans of the human race and shakes them off like a pack of fleas (your choice as to how: zombie apocalypse, massive flooding/quakes, decides to flip 180 degrees on its axis one day for the hell of it, etc, etc).

Is 500 years really such a small window when you consider we have really just been doing the real damage environmentally for 50ish years and have only really gotten rolling with regards to AI in the last 10-20.... with dramatically steepening curve on the latter.

I went with global warming/environmental but it's really a combination of that and overpopulation/disease. If the recent studies are correct, there's a lot of cities in the US that will be at risk of flooding in the next 100 years. All of those people have to go somewhere which will increase population density in the rest of the country. One good superbug could take out a huge part of the population and if the earth keeps getting warmer we're going to be in some real trouble even without a pandemic.

I voted 500-1000 years.
