I watched GF 2 last night on AMC for about the 100th time and a new question occurred to me: Who killed the guys that botched the hit on Michael in the compound?

They were fished out of the culvert, and it looked like one of him had his throat slit. But even if he was just shot, who was enough of a soldier to kill two other made guys hired out of New York for the job?

Obviously Fredo didn't do it. And I don't think Johnny Ola had it in him. I finally decided that Roth must have sent a three-man crew, and the third guy was given instructions to kill the other two after the hit so that it couldn't get traced back to him. But that's just a guess - it's pretty much an unresolved issue.

One other awesome thing - I was watching with my 17-year-old son who has a gift for languages. When young Vito is asking Clemenza and Tessio why they have to pay Fanucci when some other bookies he knows don't pay him, Vito starts naming the bookies. The subtitles don't list their names but my son suddenly said, "Hey, he said Frank Pantangeli!" I didn't believe him, so I rewound and sure enough that was one of the names young Vito, speaking Italian, gave as the guys who didn't pay Fannuci. Kind of a cool way of showing that he went back to the old neighborhood with the other guys. Also kind of cool that I (and/or my kid) is picking up new stuff on the 100th viewing.

I think the guys in the ditch were killed before the hit. Roth found a couple of random bodies and had them tossed into a ditch, allowing the real shooters to escape without incident.

IINM, De Niro also names Pentangelli when they are sitting down having pasta.

Oh and there was Fantasy Island rerun on the other day that had Frankie Five Angels in it. I pointed him out and the wife said "he was on the Sopranos too, right?" I almost took a swing at her.

Same scene. They're eating pasta and talking about having to give Fanucci $200 each. I love how Clemenza's attitude toward Vito is that he's just too simple to understand how things work and that he should be quiet, go along and pay the money like everyone else.

I don't know who the guy on the far left is either. But he looks exactly like Zaluchi.
Didn't know I had to click on the photo.

And he really doesn't.
Yeah, they look nothing alike.

Part of II's great power is the juxtaposition of the good intentions that fueled Vito's rise and the clinging to power at the heart of Michael's tragedy. Don't really like the straight chronology nearly as much

I agree completely. The whole movie is about juxtapositions. The father vs the son. Michael essentially has become the evil force that his father fought in the first place. The chronological order is interesting, but it takes way from some of the impact IMO.

Amazing how many scenes I've never seen before in this Godfather Epic on HBO.  Some really good ones too..

I don't know if it's new or an original scene but it was Clemenza who got Vito into the life in the first place by throwing the guns through his window for hiding and then when they go to steal the rug. On such little happenstances are epics and empires born. Great stuff.

Me too..still haven't been able to watch all the way through.

When Michael finally gets the name/pic of the guard from Italy who blew up Appolonia...do they show anything else about that later?

The Godfather epic is killing me. HBO always runs it late at night, just when I'm feeling guilty about staying up too late but just looking around a bit to see what's on. Last night it happened again, up watching until 2 am. Looks like another Saturday disappointing my wife and kids as I sloth around all day.

If you've never read the books. Fabrizio gets his.  I think he was working in a bakery in the book, maybe?

Also, the bridesmaid that Sonny has pinned up against the wall at the wedding?  She's  much bigger character in the books.  Lucy Mancini, I think.  Winds up in Vegas and everything.

Her ###### is also much bigger in the books.

There's some extended stuff with Jack Woltz (the movie producer) revealing him as a pedophile. Now I don't feel as bad about the horse thing.
"Godfather Epic" is on again--should be over at about sunrise.

he tries any rough stuff you tell him I ain't no bandleader--yeah, I heard that story.

Was just watching Godfather with my teenager this week and it struck me how awkward and uncomfortable the conversation in the car with Tessio must have been until they got to wherever they were taking him. Not a lot of good small talk you can make in that situation from either side.
