"The Imitation Game" WW2 biopic about mathematician Alan Turin (1 Viewer)

The way he was treated in the end is perplexing.

The powers that be could have called the dogs off and given Turing a pass for his service. Perhaps that is asking too much.

From a selfish point of view you'd think the government would want to protect an asset like Turing. The war had only been over a handful of years. He was only 41. Why would you want to bury that guy?

Not saying he was murdered but hard to believe the government was not intimate with his situation and for whatever reason decided to put him at arm's length. Perhaps they were content to diminish someone of his "character" and his role in winning the war.

Solid flick.

I would have bought him a lifetime of cocks.

It's possible that they feared he would be compromised by the Soviets and viewed him as a potential security risk instead of an asset. If the British government knew about his situation, the Soviets certainly did too.

I don't know if the Soviets would have accepted his sexuality. I mean, look at what they did with Colossus.

Really good movie, well done, definitely recommend it. The very ending may offend those with strong anti-gay views, but it really is a shame how that played out in his life. Hopefully everyone, regardless of belief, can recognize that we lost one of the greatest minds too early because of how he was treated.

Hopefully anybody with anti-gay views sees the movie and realizes how much of a stupid ####head they are.

It's a travesty that he was treated that way. But his death may not have been a suicide. Wikipedia has some alternative possibilities, like accidental cyanide poisoning from his work.

It is just me, or does this look a little gay?
I see your #### head contributions aren't limited to the shark pool. Still waiting on you to fill that Seattle thread with discussion. Well, not waiting so much as just wondering how you could look like more of a tool. Mission accomplished.

I saw that too. The film obviously went with the suicide to help make it's point. I don't know enough about his life to make a determination whether it was suicide or accidental.

Well I went and saw it last night and thought it was terrific, and I pretty much love anything Keira Knightly is in, she pretty much flips my switches.

But overall the story was sad, tragic and amazing. I think it's also almost always jarring to modern audiences to be reminded of the horror of WW2 and teh sacrifices that people went through, it's also probably a good idea movies like this are made for just that reason.

Was this based on a book? I think I recall seeing a book called "Enigma" that was around for quite a while (well before the movie) which talked about the capture of the enigma machine (quite a story in its own right, probably deserving of its own movie) and the whole project to unravel it? There is this but the cover and the title seem different from what I recall.

That BBC report has a video of a museum exhibit of Turing;'s life and in it they have a Victorian computer, from 1869, described as a "logical piano."

Saw it last night and thought it was excellent. The screenwriter's device of the three intertwined storylines created mystery where a more linear structure would not have.

I agree. Perfect for this film.

Did anyone else tear up when the machine finally cracked the code? What a great moment.

If you going to see a true story movie. Go see this one, not Unbroken.
Loved the movie. I wanted to include the eureka moment in one of my trivia posts, so looked to confirm it was true. Was really disappointed to find how far the whole movie deviates from the truth. Apart from the stuff around his being gay, most of the conflict in the movie was fabricated. His boss, the spies, etc. What they made the eureka moment out of was a basic premise included from the start.

Disappointed. Though they succeeded in making an entertaining movie, it is very fictionalized.

Loved this movie. Benedict Cumberbatch hands in another stellar role. One of the best movies I've seen from 2014.
