THE Metro-Detroit Thread (1 Viewer)

Detroit is a football town first and foremost. The wings and pistons had parades Downtown down Woodward after their championships. The Lions could have one down Woodward starting in Pontiac if they ever won a Super Bowl.

Couple of other tidbits:

RealBBQ in Canton has closed already. I ate there a few times but it was nothing special. Besides Famous Daves, Boneyard and Westpoint BBQ, where are the good BBQ joints in the Canton, Westland, etc area?

HS Football database is sweet. My HS is 18th overall since 1950.

Shameless plug for a friends business. Avenue Sports Bar in Wayne (On Elizabeth between W. MIchigan Ave and E. Michigan AVenue). Food is good, staff is excellent, overall good time. Crowd is a little different later on Friday and Saturday (younger, and such). Also, they throw a bunch of outdoor parties throughout the year that usually rock pretty good.

Burger Rankings:

Millers, then Masons, then everyone else.

Got to agree that football is king in Detroit. If the Lions ever actually won anything look out. Tigers would be next then Wings, then Pistons.

Personally I'm more like this:

Red Wings

.

.

Lions

.

.

Tigers

Pistons

As long as we are plugging our buddies' restaurants... hit up The Garage in Northville. A little pricey, but the food is outstanding and so is the service/atmosphere. Highly recommended, even if it weren't a friend's joint.

Have you been down to the Mercury yet? Quickly becoming one of our favorites, not just for the burgers, but for the fries and rings too.

Always looking for new places in the area. The places in DTP (as my kids call it) are getting old, will give this a whirl the next time wife and I do the "where should we go for dinner" thing.

we did some work for that place and my boss is friends with the owner. we got paid in gift cards so we've been there a few times already. they have this firecracker shrimp or something along those lines that was incredible. only a handful of taps but at least they keep an IPA in one of them.

On Michigan Ave in Corktown. Across from Slow's. Great food!

Who, Laddach?
yup, grew up together over by the airport
He is a great guy/coach. Has had a great influence on my 2 oldest sons.
Good to hear. He comes from a real stand-up family. His dad was a fire chief, brother's a cop. He was actually a bit of a wild child, but he was always focused on football, which is amazing considering how bad our old HS program is/was.

My sons team played the mustangs a couple years ago in a conference crossover game. Mustangs came into the game 8-0 and ended up on the wrong end of a ~50 drubbing. Sons team had about 500 yards in total offense and completed one pass the whole game.
Canton?
yes. Was the giveaway the "one pass" thing?

yes.
That was my oldest son's Junior year. He was the center and got demolished every play. Painful to watch. BTW... Canton only completes one pass EVERY game... even to this date. Never line up anyone wide. Just run it down your throat.

Corktown, right across from Slows and in the shadow of the Train Station (which is getting more windows by the day).

are you still in the 'Ville, Keerock? if so, you have to know the people I work for. They've lived there for 30+ years and there's no way you couldn't have crossed paths in a town that small.

I wil try this as well. Although, NOT going to Slows may be difficult. That place is all that its cracked up to be.

It is looking like Detroit is going to have a Honky Mayor for the first time in 40 years.

Right now it is showing Mike Duggan with a commanding 2-1 margin in every poll. 3-1 in the absentee votes.

Obviously a long-standing black/white thing in Detroit, so i hope this is a good thing. If it stirs up anger in the constituency and makes people demand responsible government, its a step in the right direction.

That is good that he has support. However, he will have to be very careful as everything in Detroit becomes racial at some point. Also, he comes from what is thought to be a rather corrupt McNamara political machine, so I am not sure that he is the right direction.

Good point but can it get any worse? McNamara`s machine company line is "Take care of business first before you steal and put all your cronies into postitions" Kilpatrick`s was just the opposite.

On another note I just heard that the expected voter turnout is around 20% of the 553,000 registered Detroit voters. That will work out much better for Duggan. The people wanting change will come out and vote.

It also means that there are a lot of people that did not support him in the election and have no real investment in him. The real truth is that there are so many other hands pulling strings in Detroit that I'm not sure Duggan is all that powerful.

Author, chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain is set to feature Detroit on the season two finale of his show “Parts Unknown”. The travelling food show has recently visited cities including Myanmar, Los Angeles and Libya.

In a trailer for the episode posted to YouTube, Bourdain describes the city’s finer points.

“You should come here for good reasons and you should come here to see what went wrong. It’s a truly magnificent place. This is where everything good in America came from … just about: great rock and roll, rhythm and blues, Motown …” he says begrudgingly admitting that techno music should be part of the list.

Back in July, Bourdain Tweeted that he visited three locations in southwest Detroit this week, including Duly’s Place, Full Belly Cafe and Vicki’s Barbecue and Shrimp.

The episode’s description from the show’s website reads:

Few cities have experienced such a dramatic economic rise and fall as Detroit. In this episode of Parts Unknown, Anthony Bourdain explores the past, present and future of the Motor City.
Promotional clips for the episode feature off-the-beaten-path dining options.

Local media personality Charlie LeDuff arrives with Bourdain in a loud classic car and shares a plate of the “luxurious” greens at a pop-up barbecue stand, Greedy Greg’s. Bourdain called the stand an example of Detroit-style entrepreneurship.

“… in the greens is that smoked ham hock?” asked Bourdain to Rochelle, the woman behind the dish.

“I can’t tell you my secret!” she said smiling.

Bourdain then visits a Salvadoran home for tamales and meat filled tortillas called pupusas. Called a Pupusa House, it’s literally a residence converted to accommodate restaurant service on occasion.

Plus, Bourdain talks to Al Hill, a man who lives in the abandoned Packard Plant.

TIL: Hazel Park thoroughbred racing season starts tonight. Amazingly, the track is profitable, albeit at a highly reduced schedule with simulcasting. 4 weeks of harness racing in the spring, 16 weekends of thoroughbreds from the beginning of summer to mid-October.

http://hazelparkraceway.com/LiveRacing/2014Calendar/

Is this as seedy as I imagine it will be? I'm planning a trip to the D around the early September home stand and MNF vs. the Giants, thought I might check it out while I'm in town.

Did anybody else used to go to DRC in Livonia? Been closed almost 30 years, but IIRC that was the thoroughbred racing and Hazel Park was strictly harness racing. But I'm surprised a smaller course like Hazel Park is still operating, it's a dying sport outside of big cities and traditional venues like Keeneland or Saratoga.

The Northville park (harness racing only) is still going strong (unfortunately)

Why is that unfortunate? You live near there?

I'll be staying near Orchard Lake Rd & 696, figured Hazel Park's not a crazy detour. Wasn't really planning on being on 275 other than to/from DTW.

Yes, I live very close. It's an ugly monstrosity in the middle of a beautiful downtown area. Brings in some pretty seedy people on a regular basis. Wouldn't be at all upset if it went away.

Gotcha. Kind of the same thing happened at Muskegon when they tried to make a go of it around 1989-91. Bad fit for the surroundings.

They have a clubhouse side at Hazel Park so its probably not hard to avoid the riff raff, though I would think people watching is part of the charm. I'm also going to check out their poker room.

Huge poker contingent at the Northville track too...
