That sucks. Although it runs later if there's a baseball game.Navy Yard Circulator only runs until 9PM.
Anything sitting atop a good hill might work. The Washington Masonic Memorial in Old Town might be a decent spot, but I'm not sure what time the grounds are open until.Wallops Island will be launching a rocket this Friday night to orbit the Moon. It is supposed to be visible from the DC area. I wonder if I can find a good spot with a nice SE view towards Wallops Island (south of Chincoteague).
In all honesty, I'm not going anywhere at 11:27 PM. If I can't see it from my front yard, then I won't see it. If it's a clear enough night, I'm thinking I can see it once it rises about the nearby tree line. And then 20 seconds later I'll be back inside and in bed.Anything sitting atop a good hill might work. Welcome.I don't think that was mentioned here. Several of us pimp Pupatella. A little less than a mile west of you on Wilson BLVD. It is Neapolitan pizza, so different than Jersey.Just moved into my apartment by the Ballston metro. I think someone recommended Pizza Roma here.. wasn't anything special. Although I'm used to North Jersey pizza.
I'll check it out. Any other recommendations for around here?dgreen said:Welcome.I don't think that was mentioned here. Several of us pimp Pupatella. Bumped for the latest queries about spots in the general vicinity of Pupatella.Pupatella is absolutely a hands-down must-do. Quite possibly the best Pizza Napolitana in the DC Metro area, with nods to 2 Amy's, Menomale, Pizzeria Orso and Pizza CS (Rockville, MD - the best pizza napolitana that no one knows about)...Checked out the Pupatella website...I'll be checking that out. Might be tough to decide between the margherita with buffalo mozz or a white pie.Oddly enough, I just posted about Pupatella in the pizza thread. Great Neopolitan pizza.
There's Ray's The Steaks and Ray's To The Third (formerly Ray's Hell Burger) in the Courthouse section of Arlington.
Rustico is a short walk so I'll grab a couple drinks there too. Keep the recs coming, I appreciate it.
I'm a Chef in the DC Metro Area, and I'm very involved in the food scene down here, FWIW. I've been meaning to contribute to this Thread for a while now, I just always have my hands so damn full. Soon, though, I promise. In the meantime...
If you're going to be anywhere near Pupatella, you absolutely have to check out Talulla and EatBar. One of my peers, Nate Waugaman is the Chef there, and believe me when I tell you he is doing the Lord's Work itself in that kitchen. Nate's a good buddy. I'll send you a PM, if I don't forget.

DO NOT waste your time with National Chains here. There is an absolute TON of quality chef-driven restaurants in your general vicinity, you'd be doing yourself a dis-service eating the same Sysco crap you can get in any major city. I've lived on the Maryland side of the Potomac all my life, and I'm very proud of what I and some of my peers are doing over here, but I have no shame acknowledging Northern VA as the better side when it comes to quality chefs, food and cooking. Most of this has to do with Montgomery County, MD being one of the least small-business friendly environments on the East Coast...and that's not hyperbole.
If the Front Desk/Concierge at your hotel doesn't know about Willow, they ought to be fired. Great restaurant top to bottom, and widely considered to serve the best burger in Northern Virginia. Sit at the bar and ask for Chris Cunningham, tell him you were sent by a friend in the industry.

Leek American Bistro should be right near you, too. I don't know anyone there, but the folks I trust all say pretty good things.

There's plenty more. I should have some time tonight to post more later.
If you need a good steak and cheese Mario's Pizza House is near you.Shockizzle said:Just moved into my apartment by the Ballston metro. I think someone recommended Pizza Roma here.. wasn't anything special. Although I'm used to North Jersey pizza.
Fellow Jersey transplant... closest that I've found to that is Valentino's Pizza, in Alexandria off Little River Turnpike.Shockizzle said:Just moved into my apartment by the Ballston metro. On Kenmore in between Wilson and Fairfax, near the George Mason Univ law school.El Pollo Rico Peruvian chicken. Just off Wilson Blvd. halfway between Virginia Square and Clarendon Metro stops.

Josh Burdette, the well-known head of security at the 9:30 Club who died Sept. 1, took his own life, according to a ruling by the Maryland chief medical examiner's office. Burdette, 36, was found dead Sunday inside his home in Kensington.
A co-worker of mine at the time was on a jury that heard a couple murder cases related to the Edmond gang. She was gone for maybe five or six weeks. I don't remember anything else about it, except that she moved out of NE (maybe 12th and G?) shortly afterwards because of stuff she heard about during the trial.dgreen said:I've always heard the name Rayful Edmond, but never knew much about him. Does that video talk about how big a prescence he was at Georgetown during the John Thompson era of the 1980s? IIRC, Coach used to talk about him being a "good guy" and a guy who'd make sure his players didn't get into any trouble out and about in DC nightlife during that time?dgreen said:I've always heard the name Rayful Edmond, but never knew much about him. Not sure what the video says, but the Ghosts of DC writeup says:Does that video talk about how big a prescence he was at Georgetown during the John Thompson era of the 1980s? You seem to remember it differently?Interestingly, he was a huge Georgetown Hoyas basketball fan, frequently attending games and befriending the players like Alonzo Mourning and John Turner. Coach John Thompson was not pleased with his players associating with known drug dealers and murderers. Thompson went as far as to have a meeting with Rayful and tell him he was not to hang out with his players, or he’d face “serious consequences.”
It’s unclear what consequences John Thompson could bring down on Rayful, but it worked. Not only that, Thompson lived to tell the story, and he was reputedly the only person to speak to Edmond in that manner. On another note, Rayful is also the reason Georgetown jersey and caps were popular in the gangster culture of the late 80s and early 90s.
The article says that they are apparently planning to open a new location around there when they find a spot. The location was a bit of a dump (it's in a small strip that should probably be torn down, next to a seedy check cashing store). I've been there many times since I moved to my part of Alexandria about 6 years ago, and it's always been busy. So, I think it was more about upgrading versus doing poorly financially. So many burger places are opening, I've wondered how well Five Guys would do with all the competition. Not that this is necessarily an idication of their demise.
It does look dumpy, but this seems strange- why wouldn't they find a new location while keeping this one running if it was doing well? The article says that they are apparently planning to open a new location around there when they find a spot. Yeah, that I don't know. I was a huge Big O and Dukes fan and couldn't agree with you more on him having to put up with Lavar for that long.I can't listen for more than 10 minutes at a clip simply because Lavar is that bad.Hard to imagine it will be the same as the old days, but I'll check Don out. I'm worried what this means for ol' Chad Dukes. I know some people find him irritating, but he's a younger voice in an increasingly geriatric industry. If Don pushes him out of the afternoon slot, I'll be a bit bummed. I mean really, there's only so much a guy can do with LaVar's nonsensical babbling for 20 hours a week.
Not sure I understand why it takes so long. Go to the top (using the current scaffolding) and drop a really long tape measure. Done. That's like under an hour if you include the time to walk up the scaffolding. Results won't be available for 2 to 3 months.
If you only give Lavar 10 minutes, you're going to miss out on him finishing his question.I was a huge Big O and Dukes fan and couldn't agree with you more on him having to put up with Lavar for that long.I can't listen for more than 10 minutes at a clip simply because Lavar is that bad.Hard to imagine it will be the same as the old days, but I'll check Don out. So it should be done right around 2080. I'm still waiting for the stupid trolley line on H Street to open, and it keeps getting pushed back, along with the Silver Line. Not sure how many of you keep up with Metro's planning and ideas for future expansion. Here's a link to the latest proposal, to be completed by...wait for it...2040!!
It's been nice knowing you guys.We might not make it out alive the way it sounds!ICE STORM OMG!!
My tax dollars at work. I am paying somebody to do that!News Release: Slippery Driving and Walking Conditions Forecast for Sunday ; Take Precautions: http://1.usa.gov/IVVn6l
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With snow, sleet and freezing rain in the forecast for Sunday, Loudoun County officials remind everyone that cold, wet winter weather can bring treacherous roadways, sidewalks and parking lots. There are precautions you can take to stay safe:
• Remember the phrase; “Get where you need to go before the weather gets bad.”
• If roads are icy, do not travel unless absolutely necessary.
• Use extreme caution when driving. You may not be able to stop as quickly as usual on the snow-covered or wet pavement.
• If sidewalks are icy, take short steps and bend slightly.
• If you fall, avoid using your arms to protect against breaks.
This is also a good time to take a few minutes to make sure you have everything you need to be ready for wintry weather.
• Get a kit. Imagine that you can’t leave your home for three days. You need basic emergency supplies.
• Make a plan. Everyone needs an emergency plan. It’s not hard to do. Find out how at www.loudoun.gov/readynova.
• Stay informed. Sign up for alerts from the county including emergency information, news releases, traffic information, and more through Alert Loudoun at www.loudoun.gov/alert; follow Loudoun County on Twitter at www.loudoun.gov/twitter; and on Facebook at www.loudoun.gov/facebook.
More information on winter preparedness is online at www.loudoun.gov/winter.

Down here in St. Mary's County, they've closed schools for the day. It's raining...Round 2. WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!ICE STORM OMG!!
I'm pretty sure, but my dad used to go in anyway.I never remember the Fed Gov closing when I was a kid and my dad was working. Now, every time there's snow in the forecast, they shut it down. Anyone remember if they used to close as often as they do now?
I think the few times that snow hit during the morning or evening rush has caused them to err on the side of caution now a days. Same with the schools they are in a no win situation...if they close and not much snow it's why did you close...if they stay open and the buses have to drive in the snow...it's why weren't you closed.I never remember the Fed Gov closing when I was a kid and my dad was working.
