The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (3 Viewers)

I just read something interesting. Metro has 613 escalators. There are about 35,000 escalators in the United States. That means about 1 out of every 57 escalators in the US is in the DC Metro system. If you were randomly placed on an escalator in the US, you'd have a 1.8% chance of being in a Metro station...probably walking up the escalator because it doesn't work.

I was on the escalators at Farragut North 2 days ago, going down to the platform. About 3/4 of the way down the very short ride, the escalator just stops (shocker). The woman in front of me goes ballistic, because she is crazy. Instead of just taking the 5 more steps she needed to get down to the platform, she turns around and starts to go back up the stopped escalator which is full of people who have begun walking down. She finally gets to the top so she can move on to the adjacent escalator, which is working.

since im sure most of us eat blue crab by the bushel.

usually my game plan when plowing through the blues is to set all the claws in a pile that i eat in-between crab refills or

take home if im tired/full.

found this recipe for those claws, pretty simple and very good. a must try for those who don't have a good Claw appetizer dish..

I dialed back a little on the butter

if you like mussels in tomato or wine sauce you will also enjoy this recipe

http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/smoky-buttery-crab-claws-50400000126102/

made this then followed it up with some jumbo lump cakes

:hifive:

What price did you pay for a bushel of crabs?

I got one last weekend that was $100 for mediums and it came with 2lbs of spiced shrimp.

The large males were $25 a dozen.

Any links out there for a list of places you can buy by the bushel? And remind me again which are better: male of female?

male are better imo. female tastes sweeter and are usually cheaper. I know some people eat the eggs off the females & I have never tried that route

The DC wharf has bushels 24/7, there are random mom & pop places almost in every city. Where are you located?

for some it may be more convenient and affordable to goto an all you can eat place instead

I know captain pells in Fairfax is having a 50% off their all you can eat blue crabs (regular $45). do this on sunday so you can sit all day watching the games

Interesting. I'm in the Fairfax area and always wondered if Pells was any good.

I've also seen this place on Route 50, which may be a good way to go for take home bushels.

ive seen lopo's before but never stopped by. heres the yelp they have really good reviews http://www.yelp.com/biz/lopos-crab-shack-Chantilly

Pells is good, theyre usually quick with new trays of crabs, always piping hot and heavy crabs. not many hollow ones.

another place for all you can eat is the quarterdeck in Arlington. it has less seating but it has outdoor seating unlike pells.. pells has two floors of seating available

the keylime pie at quarterdeck is damn good

As a coping mechanism this morning I decided put our last couple decades of sports fandom in context:

Since the 1998 Capitals got shellacked in the Stanley Cup Finals by the Red Wings, DC has seen its major pro sports teams play a combined 58 seasons without reaching the semifinal/Conference final level in their respective sports. The 2014 Redskins will obviously make it 59 seasons. On average one out of every 7.5 seasons (8 in football) ends with at least a semifinal berth. One of every 30(32 in football) should end with a title. We've gone twice as long without a semifinal as we would expect to go without a title if our teams were average.

Here's the triumphant list of the best pro sports teams we've seen in this town during my entire adult life- the ones who made it to the quarterfinal stage:

1999 Redskins- won a wild card game, botched FG attempt to beat Bucs in divisional round

2004-2005 Wizards- beat Chicago in opening round, swept by Miami in the conference semifinals

2005 Redskins- won a wild card game as a 6 seed, lost to Seattle in divisional round

2008-2009 Capitals- lost conference semifinal round Game 7 to Penguins in a blowout

2010-2011 Capitals- Swept by Lightning in conference semifinals

2011-2012 Capitals- Upset Bruins in 7, lost in 7 the next round to the Rangers

2012 Nationals- blew 6-0 lead in decisive Game 5 of NLDS

2013-14 Wizards- Beat Chicago in opening round before falling to Indiana in 6. Quite possibly the city's most rewarding playoff run since 1998, which is unbelievably sad

2014 Nationals- lost three one-run games in NLDS

Yeah, but the Mystics have been the Attendance Champions a few times. And we have the Kastles. I hear the United are good again.

Shockingly, none of that makes me feel better.

Let's just combine the Nats and Caps and call them the Napitals or Naps for short since that is what they do come playoff time.

Grew up a KC Royals fans but have adopted the Nats as my NL team so I was kinda hoping for a World Series between those two.

May have to talk to Cleveland for the use of the Naps nickname.

It's been over 20 years since a major title in this town if I remember correctly(Skins in 92').

Anybody got the time to see how many playoff series the 4 teams have had since then?

Caps have never won a title, as you know.

Wizards have one (?) back in the 70s.

Nats/Senators have to go back to 1924, I think.

Redskins have the most recent, by far.

Skins won in the 91' season and have 3 playoff wins since and 5 losses.

Capitals have never won a Cup :( and have 7 playoff series wins and 15 losses

Wizards/Bullets have 2 series wins and 6 losses but have 1 title many moons ago.

Nats have 0 series playoff wins including all the Expos years

So in total no titles,12 series wins and 26 losses since the Skins last title.

It's the list I made above plus the 2007 and 2012 Redskins (both losses in wild card round- the Shaun Alexander game and the RGIII ACL game), the Caps in 1998-99, 99-2000, 07-08, 09-10 (Montreal first round loss as the 1 seed) and 12-13, and the three Wiz teams that got bounced by the Cavs in the first round- 05-06, 06-07 and 07-08.

Yeah I was looking for a little more detail and just did a little digging on my own.

The summary? We are turning into Cleveland for sports.

Does DC have the longest drought of any city with all 4 major sports since a title game or semifinal appearance? I think Minneapolis barely has DC on titles, but they at least had the Vikings in the NFC championship game in the late 90s when Gary Anderson missed that FG.

ETA: Just looked at Minneapolis, and they've had all four of their teams make at least the conference finals at some point since DC.

The Caps are the only NHL team to have ever made it to the Cup finals to never win a finals game. That was the year Kolzig stood on his head(97/98)

Except Cleveland doesn't have a hockey team so they're only failing at three sports. Plus they had and now have LeBron, which changes everything. If LeBron played for the Wizards I'd have a totally different state of mind regarding DC sports teams right now.

Oh I fully expect Lebron to win a title and keep D.C. on a roll in futility.Looking at the numbers if the Caps weren't here we are Cleveland and actually worse(or so it seems anyways).

Yeah, I looked and the Gary Anderson NFC title game was just after that in 98/99, and the Vikings also had a NFC championship game appearance in 09/10 that I forgot about.

Yeah, Minneapolis is probably our only peer in terms of misery over the last quarter-century. Even that NFC Championship game appearances was thanks to Favre, formerly a hated rival who then threw an awful INT to screw them. They also went to the Western Conference Finals once during peak Garnett era but that was when the Lakers were a powerhouse so they had little chance of advancing.

Yet the Washington Castles are probably the winningest franchise in history in terms of % of championships won.

On a non-sports note, this taxi protest of Uber (involving honking horns for two hours (and counting) outside offices near Freedom Plaza) is making me never want to take a DC taxi again.

I bet DC would win a lot of Protest Championships if there was such a thing.

Protests, Controveries and Traffic are the only things DC seems to be good at anymore

You forgot probably the most painful of them all.

2012 Redskins - jump out to 14-0 lead over Seattle at home in the playoffs, lose the game and Griffin. Since then, the Skins have gone 4-17.

True, but that's where all the hope that was built up over that season came to a crashing hault. And put us in the position we are today with the Redskins.

Yes, but it wasn't a list of miserable moments. It was a list of teams that made it to the quarterfinal round of their respective sports since the '98 Caps. The list of miserable moments would be much much much longer. Also I'm pretty sure it would be headed by Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS. Or maybe the Caps losing to the 8 seed Canadiens in the first round after being up 3-1. The 2012 Skins were 10-6 in a horrible NFC East. A wild card win would have been fun but they probably weren't going anywhere anyway, and wont until Dan Snyder dies, goes to prison for some sort of white collar crime or is ousted via a Donald Sterling-style setup.

Anyone have suggestions for a nice restaurant in the Navy Yard area, or anywhere along the green line between L'Enfant Plaza and the Navy Yard? My wife and I are going to an event at the new Vida Fitness location next weekend and want to have dinner before-hand.

How nice? Its kind of a dead area for "fine dining" but if a good brew pub in the Churchkey vein would do, you'd be right by Arsenal/Blue Jacket. I've only done the bar there during the World Cup, but the food was well done. Osteria Morini looks to be the most upscale place in the area, but I've never been there.

Probably not as expensive as Osteria Morini since we may be sampling food and drinks being served at the event we will be attending later in the evening. Brew pub or something in that price range would be great.

Park Tavern maybe? Food is nothing special but it's decent enough, you can order smaller plates since you'll be eating/drinking more later, and it's a cool space.

There seems to be lots of good stuff around the Nats Park. I was looking for something similar before a concert there this summer. Too crowded for getting a reservation then, but shouldn't be a problem since there won't be any games going on!
