A large, heavy ship, scuttled between 1775 and 1798, is being dug out of its damp grave at the site of a new hotel construction project in Old Town Alexandria.
Archaeologists found the partial hull of a ship at 220 S. Union Street, part of the city’s major redevelopment of the Potomac River waterfront. It’s on the same one-block site where workers two months ago discovered a 1755 foundation from a warehouse that is believed to have been the city’s first public building.
“It’s very rare. This almost never happens,” said Dan Baicy, the hard-hatted field director for Thunderbird Archeology, the firm watching for historic evidence during construction. “In 15 years that I’ve done this work, I’ve never run into this kind of preservation in an urban environment where there’s so much disturbance.”
I run right by it on the WO&D trail when it is warm out. Gonna be tough not to stop in for a pint mid-run. Lots of body shops and other auto related business in the area. Kind of industrial parkish, which seems to be the template for the small breweries that are popping up in NOVA (Fair Winds, Caboose, etc.)New brewery opening in Arlington this weekend. Wow, right around the corner from where I grew up. Will have to stop in the next time I'm at my sister's house (formerly owned by my parents). I have already spent many hundreds of happy hours in that location, haunting the Record & Tape Traders that used to be there.grilled cheese and 21 taps?

Let's see if the bandwagon starts up sunday afternoon before we take the victory lap. Just sayin.Gonna be a rough Victory x 2 Monday morning
Ovi needs three in two games to do it on Sunday, right?Sunday gonna be a crazy fun day with Caps at home followed by/overlapping Redskins at home. Really hoping Ovie gets 500th goal that day to make it really special
Come on Bowie I'm usually a pessimist!Let's see if the bandwagon starts up sunday afternoon before we take the victory lap. Just sayin.Gonna be a rough Victory x 2 Monday morning
Was listening to TK the other day, and he mentioned a sports guy on WTOP referring to the Ovie goal as "The greatest moment in DC sports history." Mr Tony went on a bit of a rant over that; wondering how that could be better than 3 SBs.Sunday gonna be a crazy fun day with Caps at home followed by/overlapping Redskins at home. If it's "moment" as in "one play", I'd bet most over 40 would say Riggins running over Don McNeal(?) in the SB. I kind of doubt someone said that about the Ovi goal, because it's nonsensical and completely wrong. Maybe it could be considered the biggest individual achievement by a DC pro athlete, but it wouldn't be in the top 20 of moments in DC sports history. Just a Top 10 that springs immediately to mind:If it's "moment" as in "one play", I'd bet most over 40 would say Riggins running over Don McNeal(?) in the SB. I'm barely over 40- that would be my #1, but it's a hazy memory. Only clear memories I have of single moments that approached that are the Werth HR and Darrell Green batting down that Vikings pass to win the NFC title game.If it's "moment" as in "one play", I'd bet most over 40 would say Riggins running over Don McNeal(?) in the SB. Listen to first couple minutes of this podcast. Refers to WTOP sports guy (Dave Johnson) talking to John Walton, the guy who does the radio for the Caps. I kinda trust Mr. Tony, not just anyone on internet saying someone said something.The_Man said:I kind of doubt someone said that about the Ovi goal, because it's nonsensical and completely wrong. At one point I was planning a large gathering in that area and we were looking at Zatinya, I think they were flexible with large groups, and the small plates thing is helpful for varying budgets. We eventually settled on Hill Country BBQ, which also accommodated a table of around 12-15 of us with no problem and was a fun slightly unorthodox choice. You only spend as much as you personally choose to when you go up to get your food, and they also have live music downstairs sometimes if people feel like staying out for a while. Just make sure you keep an eye on fatguy if he goes there with you.I need help!
I'm in a training with other mid-level federal managers. I'm tasked with planning our social event for our next meeting in early February. This basically means that I need to make dinner reservations. In December, the group went to Old Ebbitt and seemed to like that. The training is near Metro Center and we'd prefer somewhere within a short walk. This will be about 20-30 people, and this is where I'm running into problems. I've called three places (Woodward Table, Bombay Club, and Casa Luca) and they all say a group that large has to pay for a private room and have a prix fixe menu or minimum food and drink order. Like I said, we're federal employees (all below SES level), so we don't want this to be too expensive or else too many people just won't show up. Old Ebbitt was a good price point. I may just have three of us each call in a reservation for about 10-12 people at the same place at the same time (if possible) and go that route. We could all end up at different ends of the restaurant, but probably not a huge deal. At all three places mentioned above, I asked if they could just set us up as three separate tables/reservations in the regular dining room and they refused.
We don't HAVE to do dinner, but that's preferred since many of us are local and most people will want to get home at a decent time. For example, last time, the plan was dinner at Old Ebbitt then a concert at The Hamilton, but nobody went to the concert. There's a Caps game that night (group tix as low as $39), but obviously that could be too late for many people. Other things to do besides just sit in a restaurant for dinner that would get people out of DC at a decent time? Or anyone familiar with a restaurant that would gladly accept a normal reservation for 30 people?
And, yeah, Ovi's 500th won't be anywhere near the top moments in DC sports history.
There will definitely be a few vegetarians in the group, so I'm guessing Hill Country is out?At one point I was planning a large gathering in that area and we were looking at Zatinya, I think they were flexible with large groups, and the small plates thing is helpful for varying budgets. I've been to Zaytinya for work events like that. They have a huge table right on the first floor and I think they also have a back room. It generally was some sort of prix fix thing, but I doubt it cost more per person than a standard entrée at Old Ebbitt. There will definitely be a few vegetarians in the group, so I'm guessing Hill Country is out?At one point I was planning a large gathering in that area and we were looking at Zatinya, I think they were flexible with large groups, and the small plates thing is helpful for varying budgets. I thought of Zatinya, but it was suggested to me that they probably wouldn't handle a large group that well? Maybe I'll call them to find out. I agree the small plates and vegetarian options would be good and I like that it would be a bit different.
Oh, and yes, I'm in contact with nittany, but thought I'd open it up to the whole group.

The gym is on campus, so there isn't really any atmosphere close to the arena other than keg parties and the trash out on US 1. There are some funky eateries further down University Blvd.Just curious what kind of atmosphere is around the arena. Gonna give it a try. Thanks for the info.Terps home games are fantastic, especially vs Conference rivals.
You want to eat, I'm your guy: best place within short distance of U of Md is Fishnet, owned by my guy Ferhat Yalcin, a longtime lieutenant of Tom Power (Corduroy & Baby Wale), who I've touted long and hard in this thread as possibly the best, and certainly the most, underrated Chef in the greater DC area.
http://eatfishnet.com/... doesn't look like much on the surface, but the quality of the ingredients and the thoughfulness and skill behind the concept and in the kitchen make this place special. Worth the trip to College Park just to eat, IMHO. IKEA is always a good enough excuse for me.
I've got plenty more where this came from in the greater Laurel/Beltsville area. At least enough for a quality 'Top 5'. More to follow...
Watched the entire game knowing Ovie would make it happen. The best part wasn't even the goal scored but how the team reacted after he scored by all rushing the ice to congratulate him.Very special moment for a very special player.Don't know if anyone saw the score but the Caps won 7-1 against Ottawa. AO had goals 500 and 501. This team is scary good, especially offensively. Anything less than the Cup would be a disappointment.
New to the Caps, I see?Anything less than the Cup would be a disappointment.
I liked Backstrom saying it was like having 20 Ovechkins celebrate a goal.Watched the entire game knowing Ovie would make it happen. The best part wasn't even the goal scored but how the team reacted after he scored by all rushing the ice to congratulate him.Very special moment for a very special player.Don't know if anyone saw the score but the Caps won 7-1 against Ottawa. Caught a T.J. Oshie interview after the game and he said the guys had talked it over(without Ovie knowing of course)and this was the plan all along.
If you get a chance to listen to John Walton's call of the goal it will send chills down your spine.Great night to be a Caps fan.
FWIW, last I saw the Caps are still just +550 to win the Cup, despite being the clear favorite (Stars next at +700). Hockey ain't basketball, it's more like baseball except with an extra playoff round to ratchet up the uncertainty. No reason to get your hopes up.New to the Caps, I see?Anything less than the Cup would be a disappointment.
As someone who has watched them for the better part of 30 years, I refuse to have expectations come Springtime. I'll hope for the best, but I'm not going to expect it.
dgreen said:Thoughts on Penn Social instead of a sit down dinner for my event? I've never been. Is that something that people would think is fun?
I've been there a few times, it's like a block from my office. I don't know the people in your group -- I think it's fun but it's pretty dissimilar from a sit down dinner, so I don't know what the expectations are. I've never had a meal there but I had nachos there last week and they were terrible. You're not going for the food.
