The 495 HOT lanes opened this weekend. It will be interesting to see how the pricing works out. The goal is to price the toll so that traffic never goes below 45 MPH. I saw prices this morning (before 6:30) between $0.70 and $1.50, depending on how far you were going.
They are claiming tolls will average $3-6 (one-way during rush hour, I assume). The lanes will basically take you between 95/395 in Springfield and 495 north of Tysons. There are only a few exits along the way.

This is brilliant. How long did it take to build those lanes? And they're just from the toll road to Springfield, right?

It didn't seem like construction took that long. Maybe two years?Southern end is definitely between Braddock Road and 395/95 with easy access to the HOV lanes on 395/95. (If this works well, maybe they'll convert the 395/95 HOV lanes to HOT?) Not sure where exactly the northern end is, but it is somewhere around the toll road.I think it will be fun to keep an eye on how high tolls go during rush hour. This is usually our least congested time of year during rush hour because of all the holidays and gov workers using tons of leave, so I don't think we'll start seeing the highest prices until the middle of January.

The HOT lanes looked empty while I was on the Beltway this weekend, but I'm sure will be made more use of during rush hour.
They talked about doing it for 395 too, but they dropped those plans. I live just off 395 and there was a lot of local opposition. They were talking about demolishing the Shirlington Circle and re-building it, which would have made my life hell while that was out of commission.

The plan sort of failed with Fenty being ousted but the racial breakdown of the vote was both humorous and sad. But I will say that along with this so called "plan," the city has seen pretty nice growth by Nats stadium and the reemergence of H Street. Anybody well-versed in the Eastern Market? I assume it's just street parking wherever you can find it?ETA: Went. Meh. Need to go back sometime when it's not so crowded and I can get a better look at who has what.

Holy crap, Super Pollo on Wilson Blvd in Arlington is unreal. Peruvian chicken joint. Charcoal cooked, with a rub that kills. Fantastic side options, too. Right about $6 for a 1/4 and two sides. Might be the best bang/buck I've ever encountered in a major city. What are some of people's favorite cheap eat places?

My Peruvian chicken go to is Crisp and Juicy up in Bethesda/Montgomery County. But I stay up here on the correct side of the Potomac away from mandatory vajajay probing land.
Been going there for years. Definitely a hidden wonder. The yellow sauce with the fries is great.

I haven't gotten the fries yet, but they did give me the yellow sauce. Just tasted a bit and can tell it would be good with fries. I'm totally in love with the place. What are some of your other favorites in the area? I just moved here and have only done SP, La Union (great) and Panda Cafe (ok).

Rocklands BBQ is pretty good. Couple of places throughout but they have on in Arlington across from the Giant. Valentino's Pizza in Alexandria is pretty good as well. Also next to Total Wine and More where you can do the mix and match 6 packs with a ton of different beers. They aren't as cheap as Super Pollo but you'll be full afterwards.

The what? I grew up in MoCo (left in '91). I'll take Arlington all week long and twice on Sunday. But I still love it like family. As long as I'm around, I'll regularly visit Great Falls, the bike trails at Schaeffer Farms, and the Lancaster Dutch market in Germantown.

Delhi Dhaba (Indian takeout) used to be a little hole in the wall b/w Court House and Clarendon and it used to be cheap. I went 2-3 times a week for years when I lived over there and still know all the regular workers.
But the owners redid the entire building, including a Subway next door, an outdoor eating area and a gigantic sports restaurant upstairs. And it's not cheap anymore. But it's better than other fast food and it's still tasty.

Jesus, just forgot the name of the place but there's an Indian restaurant in College Park (U Blvd just before NH Ave if you're coming from campus, on the left) that does a fantastic Sunday brunch. It's stuck in one of those small strip shopping centers that litter that road. I'll google it when I'm less lazy, but it's really good. Not much to look at, though. Get there by 11:30, though - by 12:30, it's slammed. Full bar, too.'Apple Jack said:

I second the Valentino's Pizza mention above.If you like dive-type places, I recommend "The Wafle Shop" in Arlandria. 24 hour breakfast diner, with waffles misspelled on the awning.
I'll second the rocklands suggestion. It has received a lot of hype the last couple years, but rays hell burger is definitely my favorite burger place (Rays the steaks is affordable for a steakhouse but a tad overrated IMO). Faccia Luna in clarendon makes some really good pizza.'Apple Jack said:

Virginia = Mandatory VaJayJay Probing Land. Conversely, I grew up in NoVa and went to HS in Alexandria, and remember Arlington long before Shirlington, Clarendon, etc., were developed, when it was just a conodo holding area for drab, sad government contractors (not that that has changed much even though there are a lot more younger people there now). And in the whole state of Virginia there is only about one or two square miles of Old Town that I would even consider living in, and that would have to be under considerable duress. Cant believe you came from MoCo and embrace Arlington, that is vile and sickening.'Apple Jack said:

I'd say it's harder to find a bad pollo a la brasa place than a good one. Most all of them are going to be pretty good. Oh, and the green sauce is better than the yellow sauce. And, ALWAYS go yucca fries instead of potato fries. My go-to is a 1/4 chicken with yucca and fried plantains. Bonus if they have Mexican bottled Cokes.

Yeah, only street parking. Union Market is new and not crowded. Of course, it also doesn't have nearly as many vendors as Eastern Market. Union Market is a good place to grab lunch. Eastern Market is better for produce.

It's a sad day for D.C.-area burger lovers. Ray's Hell-Burger and its sister restaurant, Ray's Hell-Burger Too, are closing their doors forever, Washingtonian reported Wednesday.

That's tragic. I haven't been to rays the third but sounds like they offer the same burgers though.

I received some free Wizards tickets for last night's game and took my youngest son (5). Recently, my kids' school learned about the artist Louise Nevelson. Never heard of her. My wife heard that Nevelson had a piece displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. Or maybe the American Art Museum. I'm not sure of the difference. They are in the same building. And, to my extremely untrained eye, Nevelson's piece is not a portrait nor is she American. Anyway, all of that to say, I went in the Portrait Gallery for the first time yesterday. At least I think it's my first time. It's possible I've been in there before.Even though I don't know anything about art, I enjoy walking through art museums. This building is particularly interesting and cool. My 5-year-old was only interested in seeing the one Nevelson piece and then getting out of there. But, we walked around a tiny bit before leaving.I'm not sure what I'd do if I lived in an area without so much free entertainment. Being able to just hop into a museum for a few minutes just to see one thing and not having to pay is awesome.

The NPG and American Art Museum are great. As a history nerd, the exhibit on Presidential Portraits is perhaps my favorite in DC.

One of my and my son's favorite guilty pleasures! When talking about it, you MUST pronounce with the long A so as to respect the mispellig in the name. Every once in a while mom and sister will be out at an early soccer game or something, and I'll look at him and then say something along the lines of "wAfle shop and then video games?" Usually there is a sleep coma to follow.

Totally agree. And there's an exhibit there by the gift shop where the Preamble to the Constitution is spelled out in license plates that I enjoy to an inordinate degree.If you're on that side of town, the Ford's Theatre Museum is also fantastic - though it might have an admission charge.On a side note, looks like we will be getting around a foot of snow starting Tuesday night, through all day Wednesday. Love it! A day off, a big snowstorm, and then it's all melted by the weekend.

Portrait Gallery building is quite impressive. That courtyard is amazing for events.

+1 Love that gallery.I worked at SI for several years and put together a tour for friends and fam that came to visit.Presidential Portraits and Kogod Courtyard American Art/NPGThe Sculpture Garden outside the Hirshhorn The Haupt Gardens behind the CastleThe Insect Zoo at Natural History, andThe Peacock Room and courtyard/fountain at the FreerGreat for visitors -- you kind of get a flavor of the place, hit several museums and a few under-the-radar highlights, and get to spend some time outside too. Also has the advantage that you aren't fighting crowds anywhere except the Insect Zoo.

The Freer Gallery rules. It's the perfect synthesis and balance of art and history. Plus the Freer Gallery is not nearly as popular as the bigger name Smithsonian museums so you don't have to deal with the crowds.As a nerd and a cheap *******, I love having the Smithsonian so close.

Back in the day when my wife worked, her company had a holiday party at the Building Museum. That was a nice big open space for an event. Working for the federal government, all of our parties/events totally suck.
Anyone seeing any real snow accumulation so far? I'm in Potomac near Churchill HS. I can still see grass. The street is slushy in some parts, but just wet in others. I'm in a little traveled court and usually we are a mess and rarely see a plow until 2-3 days after the storm. Unless things change fast, I don't think there is much to worry about. Stay safe.

Fredericksburg(hour South of D.C.) reporting and we have around 8 inches right now.Heavy,wet snow that is taking down trees pretty easily right now.Got one down in my backyard but thankfully it was around nothing of value and did no damage.Power has been on and off for most of the morning.
