Maybe an 1" or so here in Alexandria. Held off going into the office because the last time I went in when they said conditions would deteriorate, it took me 3 hours to get home. Probably could have made it in and back pretty easily.

This is the 3 or 4 time in the last two years that predictions are way off on what's being heralded as the "snowstorm" to end all snow storms. To call for 8-12 inches and then get nothing should be a crime. If walked into a grocery store yesterday you'd have thought it was the end of times with the way people were acting.

Getting my biases out of the way. My uncle is a contributor to the Capital Weather Gang (and is in fact their "winter weather expert"). For most of the past two seasons, they've caught crap for being too pessimistic about snow totals (or for not committing to accumulation totals four days ahead of time).

I think they, at least, have been pretty clear that this was an event where the precipatation totals were significant and that the temperature would play a key role. They have been clear that they were very confident about the predictions to the west and less confident moving eastward toward the rain snow line. Now, they did up their snowfall prediction last night at 11 when the latest models came in. Meteorology is an inexact science. But it is far, far more accurate now than it was even 15 years ago.

Not trying to hate but one thing is being slightly off and another thing is being 90% wrong. I don't opining that "there would be precipitation" is helpful to anyone. When it comes to winter weather predictions DC area has proven to the worst. Simply 100% unreliable.

:lmao: Yes, better to consider the disaster of last summer and the uncertain nature of a storm this size with temps teetering around freezing and just tell everybody saul goodman.

You don't seem to grasp the nature of weather prediction, especially in temperatures hovering around freezing. Or maybe you do and should stop listening to others and develop your own forecasts.

Buddy of mine lives near Harrisonburg and says they have at least 18 inches on the ground and it's still coming down hard.

Snow has stopped here and we are getting a rain/sleet mixture with medium to high winds.Somehow have not lost power in about 4 hours.

That's simply :bs: . They were closing schools and courts as early as 9pm last night. FWIW none of the news stations said 0% accumulation was a posibility.

I wouldn't call what they do a prediction. What they do is guess and sensationalize.

The snow/rain line was very much hit and miss so it's easy to see how they got some areas wrong. We got about what was expected.

I'm about 1/2 hour north of your buddy. We had about 12", but got lucky when we got a lull & the temp rose (kicking much of the snow off of the trees & wires) before the wind hit (which is howling now).

They were very consistent in saying accumulations would depend highly on snow/rain line. They had as an example NW DC getting significantly more than DCA even tho they are what, 2 miles apart? Also, big fan of CWG on Wash Post

They nailed it here - 10-14" was called for yesterday and we split the difference.

I'm just being difficult because I'm the only ####### at work but I do think they have been VERY wrong the last two years when it comes to predicting winter weather.

I never saw 8-12 inch forecasts for the city. And the storm isn't over. Snow is accumulating to the west where it was supposed to. Slight shifts in the system would result in more snow here. Wet snow can do a ton of damage in a hurry. Maybe you aren't aware of that, but that's what the big concern has been. Trees falling over from the weight and the wind. It doesn't take much to uproot trees around here and next thing you know you're looking at tons of power outages, property damage, road closures, etc. Power outages for days. Finally, the mid-Atlantic is a tough place to forecast snow/mix/rain. Those lines are often unknowable and it's best in many cases to err on the side of caution. But by all means continue on with your clearly well-considered complaining.

Are you on the payroll? You are pretty passionate about winter weather predictions.

Wes Junker  All those guys (and gal) at Capital Weather are awesome. The amount of BS they take is crazy (see Shake Zula, for example). Anyone that takes 10 minutes to read the details they post would understand when they are confident or not in what is going to happen. I think they got today's storm pretty close because they said the rain/snow line would be very close to DC and there would be extreme differences in snow totals based on that line. Western Fairfax County, Loudoun, Prince William has 7+ inches.

:goodposting: They were talking about this storm for almost a week and warning people that it could be very touch and go as far as that line was concerned.A few mile difference was between 4+ inches and rain.Thought they did great on this storm and will continue to follow the work they do.

I'm guessing you've only been in the area for two years. I've lived here my whole life and it's been like this my whole life.It seems, though, that the Feds shut down much easier than they used to. No real reason to close today.

3.5 years. i love it here but its comedic how bad the winter predictions are compared to other places where ive lived.

http://bangkokgolden7corners.com/images/bg_menu.pdfThis place rocks. "LAO HOT" is code for clear your calendar for the next 20 minutes.
Thai moving in on Vietnamese turf? It's nice that the Thai restaurants are all spread out and not concentrated in a couple areas. Most areas probably have a decent Thai place. Thai Basil, featured on Bobby Flay's Throwdown a few years ago, is a very good option in Chantilly. I once heard someone say: "Every time I'm eating Chinese, I ask myself, 'Why am I eating Chinese when I could be having Thai?'"

They have Thai and Laotian menus.Btw, whoever had the bright idea of running Wilson, 7, 50, etc through the same intersection can f right off.

Ah, the dreaded Seven Corners. A must avoid during the rush hours and weekends. If you look at some maps online there are many alternative routes around that mess - although lots of folks know the workarounds so the side streets can be a disaster too.

11 oclock news was calling for a foot where I am (Kensington, MD, just northwest of the city). They suck. Every news station blows the weather way out of porportion every single time. I'm sick of it.

Down my way schools were out for 2 days and went in 2 hours late today even though roads have been clear since the afternoon of the snow. :lmao:

Official total(my yard)was 8.5 inches and now we are down to spots in the yard because of the sun yesterday and rain before.

From the Post: 40 dishes every Washingtonian must try

I've only had 7 of them (6, 12, 13, 14, 26, 35, 37) so I'm no expert. By IMHO the list is incomplete without the brisket sandwich at Wagshal's, my personal DC favorite by a mile.
While I've been to some of the places on the list, I've had zero of the dishes. I guess I have some work to do.Not a lot of love for Alexandria on the list. If I was asked to name one item, it would be the frozen custard at The Dairy Godmother.

Eamonn's still good? I haven't been there in a couple years.

Have you tried Stachowski's Market's pastrami? I'm a fan of both, but Stachowski is literally about a pound of pastrami.Somewhat of an eclectic list. I know that the palak chaat at Rasika may be considered old news, but it's the most popular dish there for a reason.

Also, if I had to have one item from DGS, it would be the matzoh ball soup.

I've never been there. Wife is allergic to shellfish, which causes an aversion to most things from the sea, so don't eat seafood too often.

I have not. Apparently I have to. I'll put it on the list for next time I'm in Georgetown. Personally I wasn't impressed with DGS at all, but I went right after it opened and haven't been back since.

If anybody is ever down in Fredericksburg we have a few good places to eat that won't destroy your wallet.

Olde Towne Steak and Seafood is really good. The prime rib is superb and if you like seafood they do them all very well.

La Petite Auberge. The lamb chops are oustanding but almost every dish I've tried has been very good.

Ristorante Renato-If Italian food is to your liking this place is to die for and is my favorite.A tad more expensive but the food and service make it worth it.

The Bavarian Chef-Another treasure down here.I first discovered this place in Madison,Va and they since have expanded into our area but are not a chain.Family owned and food that is excellent.

If anybody wants anything else such as bars, burger joints etc let me know

And if you're ever down here Carls Ice Cream is the one place you have to hit.Almost like a national treasure to the locals here.Open since 1947 and still going strong.

The Inn at Perry Cabin on the Eastern Shore in St. Michaels, MD. This place is where you want to go - very $$, but they probably have good off-season specials. Great restaurant on site, you can walk to the quaint downtown, nice spa. It's where they filmed the big wedding scene in "Wedding Crashers"

Trust me, if you take your wife here, she will find it very "romantic"
This probably would have been my first suggestion too. If the budget allows there's always The Inn at Little Washington, of course.
Love that place.I think I had my g/f's panties off before we were even seated she loved it that much.

Hmmm. 20th anniversary this summer. This might be the ticket. Though with a one-night stay and dinner, the cost would be about the same as flying to Chicago for two nights, staying at a decent hotel, going to a Cubs game and eating at The Girl and the Goat, which was my previous plan.I'd much rather do this, though.

Totally worth it.They do all the little things so well it's something that is money well spent.Have you been before?

I told my wife that we could do The Inn at Little Washington for our fifth anniversary. She was pretty excited about that.

We went this past anniversary to The Inn at Willow Grove, in Orange, VA. A little bit cheaper than Little Washington, but still a nice weekend getaway.

No, my parents have been there for dinner a few times, but I haven't. I sat at the chef's table at Citronelle with my siblings and their spouses once - that's probably about the highest-end DC thing I've done. It was pretty incredible - 5 years ago and still stands out as the best meal I've ever had.

I've heard good things about that place. But for the 20th this year, I have to go pretty big - not 25th big, like a foreign junket - but bigger than just nice.I will float Little Washington this weekend and see how that goes. Still have a few months to come up with something else if needed.
