My most recent dreams have been having a job where I mostly telework and only have to go to the office once a week, at most. In such a scenario, I'd be very tempted to pack up and move to somewhere like the Eastern Shore or Northern Neck and get a house on a deep creek or small river and get some kayaks.

Highly recommend. They also have paddleboarding, but that felt more like a beach activity to me. My son rows, so he wasn't as impressed by the vibe of being on the water in the middle of the city, but I thought it was cool. If I had been a bit more ambitious we could have gone right down to the end of the runway at National and had the planes thunder overhead, but it would have been upwind and upstream the whole way back so we didn't go much farther than Memorial Bridge. But even being under Memorial Bridge was cool in its own right.

I will read through this thread more but last few pages seem to be mostly food related. I have been there a handful of times but never had a lot of free time and have only seen Georgetown area, walked the Mall, and gone to a Nats game.
If you have one day with the wife and hotel is next to the White House what would you guys do? We like walking around. Will be in October so weather shouldn't be too awful. Bonus question: One place for dinner. Not super fancy but good atmosphere. We have reservations at "Founding Farmers" right now. We are big wine fans as well.

I'm sure there are 40 other places that people will recommend with better food but in that area I'd rather go to Old Ebbitt Grill than FF. Much more of a unique DC vibe and the food is good. Very close to the WH.

Funny you mention that place. It one of the few places that I have been to that I remember the name (others being the Ben's Chili Bowl and The Blue Duck Tavern) it was right next to my hotel. Had a late breakfast there after a rough night and it was solid.

Georgia Brown's is another place I'd say is better, more DC, and not super fancy. But it's not going to be anything top of the line. Or Potbelly, of course.
For walking around, neighborhoods around Dupont Circle or Capitol Hill are probably the next most popular after Georgetown.

Since you have walked the Mall, I assume the monuments have been done -- how about the Smithsonian museums? You could tour the U.S. Capitol as another option. Lots to walk around inside, but I'm not sure if you prefer something outside (still plenty of outside walking though, as you jump between museums).

I have walked the Mall quite a few times but love it. She hasn't been there in many years so that is probably going to happen at some point in the day or at night.
Smithsonian needs to be on the list for sure. Hadn't thought about touring the US Capitol, will look into that as well as Proof. Thanks.

I'm headed to a conference in D.C. Tuesday. Fly home Thurs night. Will be at the Ronald Reagan Building/International Trade Center and I guess there's a connected Marriott? Any great ideas for food or cool hang outs nearby? Baseball season over for the Nats, so no luck there. Doubt much is going on with music/events mid-week. Been to the main tourist spots. Will be busy during the day but will have a few flexible nights. Suggestions appreciated.

It's probably the Marriott that's across Freedom Plaza from the Reagan Building. I recommended Boss Shepherd's to someone else who was staying over there not too long ago. Known for their fried chicken.
I don't know about music and other events. I think the Wizards first preseason game is tomorrow night.

Really lucked out up this way. A couple inches of rain on Friday/Saturday, but nothing bad since.

Sunny and 65ish outside of DC. Doesn't look like were due for rain until the weekend. We didn't get hit anywhere close to the Carolinas. We were forecasted for ~2" max. Not sure we hit that high. May be different in varying areas.

Just got back from DC on a family trip. Saw most of the monuments, memorials, etc. Joe Walsh played at the Washington Monument on Sunday. Went to Smithsonian Science, Air & Space, and National Zoo. Arlington Cemetery for the changing of the guard was pretty cool. Got free tickets to the Newseum. That place was pretty cool.

I went when I was somewhere around their age, but that was 40-45 years ago. My memory now tells me I loved it, but I may have been bored and am misremembering. I know I was big into (what passed for) history and, especially, the Revolution back then so I'm sure I liked at least some of it.

They do have things for the kids to do I believe IIRC.Thought they had an adventure map for them to do and also the animals will keep them busy as well.

Mount Vernon is well worth seeing. It's run not by the government but a private group of ladies that raised the money to save and preserve it more than a century ago. It had gotten a little musty but they recently got a huge grant from Ford and built a state of the art visitor center and museum. I love the back veranda with the vista across the river to the opposite shore that is completely unchanged since Washington sat there

Went last spring on a beautiful day; we have a 12, 11, and 8 y.o. And they had fun. I agree that the adventure books will help. There is lots of outdoor activities, and that helps with kids, and just being able to run a bit helps too. They are probably hitting this stuff in school, so being there triggers the learning, who knows they may teach you stuff!

Mount Vernon is my favorite place in the area. I've been many times. Definitely worth going to. Kids should enjoy it. The new museum has a lot of stuff geared to kids too.

I like how in the opening teaser they show the kids face and then during the longer report they blur out his face.
I have nothing against suburbs. I live in the suburbs. But, the suburban culture and design just isn't good for pedestrians. Yesterday, my boys (10 and 8) and I were crossing a busy road on our bikes. We had the crossing signal and oncoming cars turning right just kept going. Just about all of them looked over at us coming across and just kept going. Some even accelerated to make sure they beat us. After about 8 cars someone finally stopped and suffered that 3 second delay so we could get all the way across.
It's understandable, though. Pedestrians are generally a rare thing in the suburbs, so you aren't accustomed to look for them and it can catch you off guard when they are there.

Yeah, I'd guess Arlington is a little better than Fairfax or Loudoun, but still not the best. Heck, I hear people all the time talk about the "crazy" pedestrians in DC. Pedestrians are everywhere in certain parts of DC yet many drivers still don't give them their proper right of way.

So, cops come by to check out area (note: not cop's fault, they got a 911 call). And kid runs. This puts cops in a tough position: It's not illegal to run from the police. But . . . what do you expect them to do? If I am walking down the street and turn the corner I see a german shephard standing there looking at me, possibly growling, I'm probably not going to make any sudden moves like turning and running, because it may decide to chase me and rip me to shreds. You kind of have to treat police like you'd deal with a wild animal . . . very carefully.
Anyway, and unfortunate situation the whole way around.

Big DC sports night tonight- Wiz season opener, Caps-Penguins and even a DC United playoff game.
If you're a casual hockey/Caps fan like me you might have missed most of their games to date. They haven't played many games for some weird reason, and their three most recent games were weekday West Coast games last week. I lucked into catching all of them, and this team is incredibly entertaining so far. They're at that elusive level where everything they do seems to work and you feel like they're world-beaters, like the Wiz vs the Raptors in the playoffs this year or the Nats during that 10 game win streak last season. Kuznetsov has been as fun to watch as Ovi at his best. No idea how they're doing it or how long it will last (maybe tom22406 or dgreen has more insight), but it's worth the effort to check them out before it ends. We don't get many chances to see stuff like this around here.
