The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (1 Viewer)

ESPN 980 on Wednesday announced that it is discontinuing its morning drive show, “The Man Cave” with former Washington Post columnist Jason Reid and Chris Paul, “effective immediately.”

ESPN’s nationally syndicated “Mike and Mike” show, which was moved to SportsTalk 570 when “The Man Cave” began, will return to the 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. time slot on ESPN 980.

“Mike and Mike” will be simulcast on both 570 and 980 through Friday. According to the station, “The Steve Czaban Show” will air in the morning drive slot on 570 starting Monday, but that is subject to change.

“Unfortunately we were not able to obtain the consistent level of ratings success needed in morning drive over the last seven months, and therefore felt the need to make this change,” ESPN 980 director of programming Dan Zampillo said in a release.

As long as they keep the Mr. Tony show that airs at 10. All is well. Only show I listen to on that station!!

Do alot of you guys listen to sports talk around here? I can't anymore. Used to listen to the Junkies every morning and The Drive on the way home. But the Junkies became too annoying about the Redskins and I'm not a big Galdi or Cooley fan on The Drive. The rest is pretty bad outside of Tony.

Mr. Tony is the only local sports talk I listen to. I do have sports talk on all day, but I am usually listening to national stuff. I'm not a Redskins fan, so I'd rather not listen to that BS!!

Thom Loverro's voice drives me nuts. I like Sheehan, but because of Loverro, I can't listen to the show.

Loverro is impossible to listen to. Sheehan is okay, but can go off the deep end every so often.

Nothing local is worth a damn except for Czabe and Cooley in the afternoons.Cooley doing his film breakdown is always a good listen even for someone, like me,who isn't a Skins fan.

Junkies are very good at talking anything but sports,Grant and Danny are terrible together,Dukes, like the Junkies,is best suited to not talk sports. On 980 I only tried the Man Cave a few times and had to cut it off,Tony K is the best thing they have but again he needs to stay away from sports even though from time to time he is a decent listen at it,The mid day show with Sheehan is horrendous,I don't mind the Doc Walker and B-Mitch show after that but in very small doses.

So yes sports talk radio here is terrible.

ETA:just a little rant here but if I hear one more time how these stations only talk sports that drive ratings(Skins)and not talk about the Caps and Wiz even though both teams are good to very good.

Dukes has his famous line where he says he would love to talk those teams but the ratings don't allow for it.Maybe if you actually got your listeners excited to talk about them or were knowledgeable about either of them more people would tune in or actually call to talk about them.

Also have say that Ed Walker on WAMU(not sports talk)passed away recently.I had caught his Big Broadcast a few times that he did that plays old radio shows from the 40's and 50's(Dragnet,Gunsmoke etc).RIP Ed,you will be missed.

Big DC sports night tonight- Wiz season opener, Caps-Penguins and even a DC United playoff game.

If you're a casual hockey/Caps fan like me you might have missed most of their games to date. They haven't played many games for some weird reason, and their three most recent games were weekday West Coast games last week. I lucked into catching all of them, and this team is incredibly entertaining so far. They're at that elusive level where everything they do seems to work and you feel like they're world-beaters, like the Wiz vs the Raptors in the playoffs this year or the Nats during that 10 game win streak last season. Kuznetsov has been as fun to watch as Ovi at his best. No idea how they're doing it or how long it will last (maybe tom22406 or dgreen has more insight), but it's worth the effort to check them out before it ends. We don't get many chances to see stuff like this around here.
Kuznetsov is finally just playing now where many thought he would and that's at an elite level.Trotz showed him some tough love last year by making him a healthy scratch a few times and it has paid off with what now is a blossoming superstar.Of course playing on a line with the leagues best goal scorer we have seen in quite a few years helps but his creativity has been top notch and the game seems to be slowing down for him.One thing to watch for is if Backstrom is ever shifted back to top line duties(which I'm sure he will at some point)how this plays out for Kuzy.I would hope Trotz sticks it out with Burakovsky and puts him with Kuzy to make a line with Williams that will be tough to stop.

So yeah, things are very good right now and they look like a top team.Let's see how they look after 30 games for a better barometer on them come playoff time.

Just one example of why the Junkies have no business talking hockey.Jason(Lurch)is a degenerative gambler who would bet on the time a turd hits the water and he was talking about betting the pucks and teams he would fade.He brings up a ranking list he found on a website that listed New Jersey,Colorado and Arizona as teams that will suck this year.He then tries to name the nicknames of said teams and gets the Devils right, calls Colorado the Rockies and has no clue about the Coyotes.EB and JP also whiff on two of the 3 and only Cakes knows all 3.

You've been talking sports for over a decade and even went by The Sports Junkies but don't even know a major sports teams nickname(s)?I know some of you may not know them off hand but this is what they do for a living.

ETA:And I should say that I actually like Lurch,he is by far the best thing on that show.

To my untrained eye it looked ... I dunno, I guess special in a way that even people don't watch the sport every day can recognize. Similar to the Spurs when they're firing on all cylinders, or the Spanish national soccer team when they were doing the same a few years ago. Ridiculous ball (puck) movement, defenses left looking helpless, like playing a video game with the settings manipulated in favor of one team or something. I assume it won't last, because DC, but ####### it was fun to watch.

I always thought that Mr. Tony's show was a bit like the FFA. They talk about music and movies and politics and other non sports-related issues with a bit of sports thrown in here and there.

Mr. Tony's music knowledge is scary. Now granted it is from a far different era than most of us ever knew or want to know, but he knows his #####!

Oh the way they have played the last 5 has been pretty special. They beat a very good Chicago team and then swept a normally tough west coast trip in very convincing fashion so don't read what I said as anything negative. The sample size is just so small and we did see the Sharks pretty much hand them their ### in a 5-0 beating at Verizon(really 3-0 but they had 2 empty netters).

So yes feel excited as I believe this is the best team they've had in the Ovie era.The 09-10 team was a offensive juggernaut but had really glaring holes on D and in goal. This is a very deep roster and also is very well coached so I really like their chances but injuries and various other things will happen, let's just hope they aren't too bad or to the wrong players.

I'm stoked for the Wiz tonight but will have both tv's going in my den to watch both games.Let's bring two titles to D.C. this year!!!

Yeah I know..............we are cursed. :(

World Series too, but I might be the lone DC area sports and politics nerd watching it.
WS on here. Gotta root for the AL. Washington: First in war, First in peace and LAST in the American League.

I miss having an AL team in DC. Just can't get into the NL. Used to watch the Senators back at DC Stadium. Frank Howard would hit a HR, the Senators would lose & life would go on.

Lifelong Orioles fan here, but the first major league game I went to was the Senators at RFK. I don't even remember who they played, but I came home with a Del Unser batting helmet.

If you like Old Bay, it's pretty much a must that you root for the Orioles!

I've been an Os fans since about 1975 ... it took a few years to get over having my team move away in 1971. When I lived in MD, we were fixtures at the Bowie Baysox games. We get back to "the Yard" for a couple games a year now. People ask me why I don't root for the Gnats... it's simple, they aren't my team.

If the Nats were here when I was growing up, I'd a Nats fan instead of an O's fan. But by 2005, I had already been rooting for the O's for over 10 years and couldn't just give up on them. I don't mind the Nats, but the O's are my team and will always be my team.

I'll root for a National League team when they adopt the DH and not a day sooner. It's all about what you grew up with. Senators played the Yankees, Redsox, Indians, Orioles & Tigers. Phillies? meh Braves? nope.

When looking at areas of the country to live in we joked that we had to be near NFC & AL markets.

This attitude is all good in my book. It's the "we grew up rooting for the Orioles, how can you possibly root for the Nationals?" attitude that annoys me. One, who cares who someone else roots for? Especially if it's a team with your city's name on their jersey and a stadium just a quick metro ride away. Not like we're abandoning the local team and bandwagoning or rooting for their rival out of spite or something. Two, anyone who grew up around here or has lived around here for a while and is familiar with what Angelos has said about and done to baseball fans in this city should be able to understand why it was easy for many of us to drop the Orioles. And if you didn't do that and stuck with your childhood team, I totally get it. I can't quit the Skins despite my feelings about the owner and the stadium and the team name and the league for pretty much the same reason.

+1

BTW Angelos & Snyder are arguably the worst owners in pro sports. I don't blame anyone from walking away from either team, though I doubt I ever could.

As the Thanksgiving draws closer, I'll post a list of upscale restaurants offering Thanksgiving Dinner that I think offer the right combination of quality and value.

As an alternative, if you want to host Thanksgiving, but don't want to deal with the cooking side of it, but want to eat food that's both cooked professionally and utilizes quality ingredients, the upscale seafood market at BlackSalt offers Thanksgiving Dinner where you can order a full feast with plenty of trimmings. Here's what's cooking for T-Day 2015:

I did the upscale thing at Bourbon Steak. Obviously very pricey for 10, but it was very good. That was several years ago, though.

I'm probably doing a lousy buffet thing in Sterling this year, but my dad will only take my Mom (who's in a wheelchair) where he's comfortable now. I can't get him into the city.

Georgia Browns does something similar, and if I could easily hike into DC from Leesburg, I'd do that in a heartbeat. I tried to get a table at GB's on Open Table last night, and wasn't able to. I will be calling shortly to see if there was an issue with the program, not the fact that they are out of reservations.

I read a really interesting article in the Post many years ago talking about traffic congestion in DC and how it got so bad. I wish I had saved it, because it made some fascinating points on how geography (the Potomac) and government (the Feds not wanting I-95 to go through town supposedly for national security reasons) completely changed how growth took place in DC and its suburbs.

Media seems really excited about tonight's Georgetown-Maryland game. Anyone here care? I've never cared either way about Maryland. I was born at Georgetown Hospital, so they've always been my college bb team, although I really don't care that much. It's nice that they are finally playing each other, but not sure if I'll watch tonight.

Eh. Not a fan of either team, but I can see the excitement. 2 local basketball powers finally playing for the first time in a few decades.

Yeah, it's nice that they are finally playing each other, even if it is only because they are forced to. I'd like to see DC implement something like Philly's Big 5, but Georgetown and Maryland have been reluctant to schedule tough OOC schedules for as long as I can remember. Closest was the two-day BB&T Classic, but it never had full participation, and they always had/have to bring in teams from outside DC.

Perhaps showing my bias, I do give credit to Virginia for coming to GW last night when Maryland and Georgetown have avoided it.

I always thought the BB&T should be Georgetown, Maryland, GW, and George Mason every year.

Good win for GWU, but shouldn't UVA actually win something when it counts before this becomes a storm the court win?

Signed, UVA law alum who can't bring himself to watch more than 10 minutes of a Tony Bennett coached team.

Waaaay back when, I was a freshman or sophmore (89-90 or so) we were winless in January. We were the last team without a win in NCAA at that point. We beat UMASS at home, stormed the court, and proceeded to lose the rest of the season.

Wins are precious!! ;)

GW hadn't beaten any ranked team at home since 1998, and any team at home ranked that high since beating UMass when they were #1 with Camby. Don't get the chance to have wins like that very often. I was at the 1998 game and the game yesterday, and yesterday was up there with that one.

I just finished a biography on our first president so Im all intrigued to visit Mount Vernon soon. Anybody been? Did you enjoy? I imagine two girls, 9 & 11 would be bored to tears? Should I go alone so I can enjoy myself?
They do have things for the kids to do I believe IIRC.Thought they had an adventure map for them to do and also the animals will keep them busy as well.
they also have some cool movies, including one where it "snows" in the theatre. my 3 kids (11-8-6) enjoyed our half day there.

GW Law sent me an email today saying, essentially "how about that win! Please donate!"

Well, I was going to watch some of the game, but I can't. Apparently, I don't have ESPN News. Who knew? ESPN says it's on Watch ESPN, but it won't let me watch in there either since I don't have ESPN News. I guess I'll wait for this football game to end on ESPN2 and then watch some. Why in the world does ESPN still schedule football games for only 3 hours? They NEVER end in 3 hours!

We smell like weed, nobody cares.

I have many questions, not the least of which is where the hell do the 43% of people who don't smell marijuana at least once a month live? I can imagine it in upper NW near the state line where there's detached homes, maybe wrapping around to Brightwood/Shepherd Park. That's all I got.

I'm such a square I'm not sure I'd recognize the smell of weed. My BIL works a lot near the Verizon Center and says he smells it all the time.

I've mentioned in this thread that I've been in DC or Arlington 10 weeks this Fall, I smell it at least once a week in DC near Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle areas. I've never noticed it in Arlington, but I'm usually around the Courthouse and that's during the daytime hours.

I'm not a toker, so I've never researched it. Is weed legal in DC? What about surrounding areas?

I have many questions, not the least of which is where the hell do the 43% of people who don't smell marijuana at least once a month live? I can imagine it in upper NW near the state line where there's detached homes, maybe wrapping around to Brightwood/Shepherd Park. That's all I got.
I've mentioned in this thread that I've been in DC or Arlington 10 weeks this Fall, I smell it at least once a week in DC near Foggy Bottom and Dupont Circle areas. I've never noticed it in Arlington, but I'm usually around the Courthouse and that's during the daytime hours.I'm not a toker, so I've never researched it. Is weed legal in DC? What about surrounding areas?
GWU is in Foggy Bottom, so surprised you noticed the smell around a college campus!!
