The last time DC Sports teams were in a finals, at least I think this is right...

Caps - 1998

Redskins - 1991/92

Wizards/Les Boulez - 1979

Nats/Senators - 1933

20 year drought from being in a finals in a major US Sport.  27 years since winning something. 

So cool to see the Caps finally break through.  Now time to close the deal.

Do I dare say the words "FFA cornhole" for one of the games?

(Of course, I say this before I mention the idea to my wife who I can say with 80% certainty will have a "you are going to leave me alone to babysit our son and watch the game by myself while you hang out with a bunch of strangers from the internet?" reaction to it.)

I'd be up for it for one of the games. Doesn't matter home or away- I just checked stubhub and I will not be going to Cap One Arena for any of the action.

 
I really,really hate the sports talk media around here.Most of them have no clue what the sport even is yet now they all are somehow experts :wall:

And they wonder why during the regular season nobody wants to call in a talk hockey,it's because they know nothing.

 
I find playoff hockey to be so stress-inducing as to be unpleasant. The combination of he  game being relatively low scoring, but with relatively high rates of scoring chances (that can come out of nowhere) makes me glad that I've never put a lot of emotional capital (punners, gonna pun, sorry) into the team.  I do hope they win, because some of my friends will be insufferable about any bad call or anything NBC says if they don't.  

 
Had to give some props to Davey Martinez for showing his support of the Caps during this run.Now if Ted would only come to his senses and rid himself of the cancer that is Ernie Grunfeld the basketball team might actually have a realistic chance in the East.

Would be great to send off Trotz with a Cup since I really don't expect him to return next year.Really hard to not like the guy either way though.

I am so tired of this. The perennial loser's lament is that the broadcasters hate their team and are always being unfairly negative. Hey, you want NBC to say good things about you, win 2 straight Cups like Pittsburgh, and then they'll talk about you like they talk about Pittsburgh. What great things are they supposed to say about a team that underachieves and loses in the second round every year? Caps fans have cried for years about NBC's supposed disrespect for Ovechkin. Well, they were literally calling him the second coming of Mark Messier over the last two games - so maybe some of that previous disrespect wasn't completely undeserved?

One of my best friends has been doing it all playoffs.  Including in the Tampa series.  And I wanted to say, "Wait, do you honestly think that NBC wants Tampa in the finals over the Caps?"  I'm not Joe Hockey, but it seemed pretty clear that "can expansion team win it all, or can Top XX player of all time finally win the big one?"  is the angle the network would want.  

In the Pittsburg series, my friend was upset that Milbury or whoever immediately agreed with an interference call on Holtby.  But the guy immediately agreed with an interference call on Pittsburg for the same action like 10 minutes later.  This is also a friend who literally never talks about the Caps until the playoffs.  I have no doubt that he's a true fan.  He has a playoff beard and everything, but sheesh.  I'm afraid that when you're one of the best teams in the sport over several years (as the Caps and Nats have been) but you nevertheless have a poor history in the playoffs, a certain narrative coalesces.  Maybe it's not fair.  Seems to me that short series in both sports can hinge a lot on luck or just hot pitching/goaltending.  But they have to talk about something.

Yeah, the only good hockey talk comes from any guests that the radio shows do. Other than Crashing the Net, I can't think of one local sports media person who knows hockey. I mean, I'm no @tom22406, but I think I know a lot more than these guys. I've learned over the years, sports radio personalities are radio personalities first and sports experts second (or third or fourth or not at all).

I had 106.7 on my car radio first thing this morning because I was listening to the Nats on my way home last night.  I was briefly happy that the Junkies were talking about hockey instead of news from Skins rookie minicamp/Kirk Cousins/RG3, but still had to turn off pretty quickly.

I’ve been pretty surprised and happy with the quantity of hockey talk, at least during the time I’ve been in the car recently.

I appreciate the kind words but I very clearly whiffed on the Caps team this year.I did not see this run coming from what I saw earlier in the year and especially what they did the last two games.that may have been the best they have played in the Ovie era from any team of that time.

Totally agree on the other point you were making about the radio personalities over sports experts even though one group claims to be sports junkies.I enjoy those guys when they talk anything but sports.EB loves the dong,Lurch(refuse to call him Bish) loves betting and baseball,Cakes is a poker addict and JP loves to hear himself talk.The funny thing is most of them don't even like any of the D.C. teams as a whole.EB is a Skins guy but the rest of them root for other teams,Cakes is the Caps guy but only watches them so whenever he's asked to talk about other teams he has no clue,Lurch hates them all and JP you can throw in as WIz fan to a certain degree(he's paid to do so is what I will call it).

Grant Paulsen I can do in very small doses but may have the most hockey knowledge of the bunch on the station with the exception of the Crashing the Net crew of Daly and Greenberg(who maybe get an hour a week if lucky and only during the season).

ESPN 980 is complete #### with the exception of Czabe so I'm glad they were sold and hopefully the talent gets bought out.

Ellicott City is like a Bowl at the bottom of a steep ravine with 2 or 3 tributaries flowing in. When they flow too fast the bowl overflows. Why have 2 1000-year floods happened in the past 2 years? Development with impermeable surfaces now funneling massive amounts of water into the bowl. They probably won’t rebuild it all again, which is heartbreaking after a town that has been there for more than a century and is suddenly rendered uninhabitable

My best friend lives in Ellicott city.  Two years ago I visited up there for the first time and the Old Town area is really nice area.  When the flooding happened last time, I completely understood why, and your explanation is spot on.  My friend lives about 4 miles from that main area, and his street was like a river.  As of earlier tonight it wasn't as bad for him.

The bolded is especially important. And that's not in Old Town - it's in all of the development at higher elevations up near Frederick RD and US40. Water goes one way.

It's a great list. I wonder why John Wall's shot in Game 6 last season isn't mentioned, though. After all the stakes were exactly the same as the Werthquake (game winner to extend a conference semifinal to a winner take all game). And unlike Werth he actually turned defeat into victory.  Nats may well have won that game if Werth had simply walked or even made an out, there were no outs in the inning when he hit it.

I assume it has something to do with the Nats having a legitimate chance to actually win a championship in 2012, whereas the Wiz obviously weren't beating the Warriors and probably would have lost to the Cavs. I was at both games and I'll never forget either of them, but there was a little more buzz for the Werth HR, I assume for that reason.

Other than that one, I can't really think of any obvious omissions.

ETA- Darrell Green's pass breakup on 4th down in the NFC championship game to send the Skins to the Super Bowl, maybe.  But he didn't really do that much.

This is a good list. I feel like Darrell Green's pass breakup on Darrin Nelson at the goal line in the NFC Championship game could be there. Though I think Nelson drops it anyway.:

Also Darrell Green tracking down Tony Dorsett from behind on Monday Night Football, though that wasn't a huge moment, just an amazing play. And the entire second quarter of Super Bowl 22.

I'm really happy for the DC sports fans in their 20s. They've never had anything to celebrate. I'm 49.

Vaguely remember the Bullets in 78-79.
Became a huge Orioles fan, went to the World Series when I was 10, won it when I was 14.
Redskins - 3 championships in 4 Super Bowls between the time I was 13 and 22. 
Plus Georgetown in the mid-80s.
Plus Sugar Ray Leonard - vs. Duran when I was 11, vs. Hearns when I was 12, vs. Hagler when I was 17.

I thought DC was a Sports Heaven. Look at a kid who's 25 - Born in 1993, never won a damn thing. I'm impressed with how this generation has managed to stay fans despite so much nothing.

You also had Cal Ripken. I know not a championship, but still a big thing to cheer for,

 
Obviously, 70 chip is the gold standard, but the  Manley tip/Grant interception is most memorable to me because it was on my birthday and I was still so unpopular that I was at Anthony Gamboa's birthday party at the time.

College sports doesn't really have the same impact on the city's sports fans IMO. I'm a big basketball guy and a DC sports lifer, and I was excited about GMU in '06, but I don't think that final stop of UConn to get to the Final Four would even make my Top 100 if God forbid I ever sat down and wrote them out. 

If you do count college I think that's probably #1 though.  I don't remember any huge moments or plays for Maryland in 2002, and IIRC Georgetown just steamrolled everyone in 84.  Didn't Maryland beat Duke on a final possession in a regional semifinal at some point?

Not really a play, but Thompson's hug of Freddy Brown is one of the big iconic moments. I guess both hugs are iconic, but I'm thinking of the one after they beat Houston.

You'd have to be a Maryland fan to appreciate it, but Juan Dixon hit a shot against Indiana in the NCAACG that turned the entire game back into Maryland's favor after Indiana had made a run and the Terps looked lost.  Right around the same time, Byron Mouton made a great hustle play. Those two together pretty much won the game for the Terps.

I have one too. It was too bad about having to get rid of the coach that fall. Haven't been the same since.

When I was there (88-92), my freshman year we didn't have a win until the middle of the season (only Div 1 w/o a win). We then beat UMass at Smith Center, stormed the court and cut down the nets. We then proceeded to lose the rest of the season!!!

Yeah, lost a bunch of transfers that year and the following year, and MoJo has had poor success recruiting.  They just signed Chris Sodom as a transfer from Georgetown -- kind of intrigued to see what he can do, although getting kicked off Georgetown's team is not a great sign.  Less sure how I feel about the rumored hiring of flopmaster Greg Paulus as an assistant.

 
Hearing a lot of shtick about what DC should do tomorrow to match the Vegas pregame show. One was have a bunch of people skate up to each other and ask them what they do for a living. 

My favorite was to have a guy in Golden Knight garb skating around then have Dale Hunter come out of nowhere and crush him with a blindside hit.

When I watching the Vegas intros, I was thinking the best thing DC could do to respond was Sting and Shaggy, and, by golly, they got them!

I podcast the Junkies and sometimes Dukes here on the West Coast.  Used to listen to Junkies syndicated found them again when I started podcasting.  The last few weeks have been almost unbearable.  Listening to hockey breakdowns is far from my favorite thing anyway, but throw in EB going from a hater to the world's biggest homer (again), Cakes outdoing him in being defensive for all things Caps and somehow MORE of a brainless homer than EB, them taking 50 calls a day from brainless fans, interviewing "experts" every other segment, and JP droning on and on with interminable stories, I spend most of the podcast fast forwarding. Can't wait for this season to be over.

Oh, and using the god####  "_______y" nicknames.  Kouzy, Gruby, Backy, Oviyiy, Trotsy.  My god make it stop.

No idea. I had never heard of Sting and Shaggy until today. Well, since the “Sting” in Sting and Shaggy is the famous Sting, I’ve heard of him. But I don’t know who Shaggy is and I was definitely unaware he was paired with Sting. I assume this is just another sign that I’m getting old.
