The ***OFFICIAL*** Washington, DC thread (3 Viewers)

Feels like the least excitement for either the NBA/NHL playoffs in DC in quite awhile, despite both teams making it.  Maybe a combination of Wizards struggling down the stretch, and, after a decade of hope, people know what to expect from the Caps (plus they are a bit down this year, and mostly the beneficiary of a weak division).

That means this is the year one or both of them break through, right?
Just remembered this post of mine from two months ago.  By "breaking through," I had just meant making the conference finals, but I'll certainly take this.

NBC Washington reporting parade on Tuesday on Constitution Ave.

I'll probably be taking an extremely long lunch to head over from the Hill if anyone is going that direction and wants to meet up. Not a lot of Caps fans at the office so I'll probably be solo.

Also 100,000 sounds low by an order of magnitude.

I may have to see what the road closures are looking like and when they close down Constitution.  My wife's office is in the L'Enfant area off Independence, and I may be that way if I have to head in with her.  My office is in the Metro Center area (if anyone is coming from that area and I can make it in there, I can also probably meet up).

This is great.  Whoever edits videos for Caps social media deserves a ring and a day with the Cup.  I will definitely associate the Mumford & Sons song with the playoff run for the rest of my life.

My God, this just keeps getting more incredible. Simultaneous storylines of Burakovsky getting a tattoo and Ovie and the gang drunkenly running into Javanka at Cafe Milano.

:lmao:  This team will show up to training camp totally out of shape and miss the playoffs next year and I’m ok with that.

The thing is, I have no idea how much of this is normal. I gather these crazy fan-friendly celebrations are above average, but do entire cities always lose their minds like this?  Does half the town sport championship merchandise 48 hours later?  Do role players like Wilson and Vrana instantly become A-list celebrities/immortals?  How long am I gonna keep watching replays of games? I have no idea.  I hope we find out some day though because this is awesome.

Yeah I've been wondering the exact same things. This can't be what Boston feels like when they get a win but probably what Cleveland felt like.

:goodposting: - Imagine what Cleveland would be like if the Browns won a SB, or maybe Detroit!

I had always heard stories of when each guy had the Cup and things they had done with it but never the entire team celebrating it with the city like this.It would have been very easy for the players to just stay in their own circle and party together but they took it upon themselves to make sure to go out with the fans and celebrate with them every chance they can. These are memories for a lot of people that will never be forgotten and will go down in D.C. sports history as legendary.

I didn't think I could love the team any more but damn if they haven't done it again to me.What a glorious last few days this has been and can't wait to celebrate at the parade tomorrow!!

I had a noon meeting that I was worried about tomorrow, but it got cancelled to free up my calendar.  Nice to see the city take this all in.  Looking forward to heading down tomorrow.

Streets won't close until 9:30, so time for people to head into the office in the morning.  It might still be a traffic nightmare, but I don't care.

Bought my first newspaper in many years last Friday. Just bought another one today with the special Cup section. I probably should buy multiple because one of my sons is already talking about cutting up pieces from last Friday's paper to put on his wall.

Does anyone know how the rally is supposed to work? I haven’t seen anything about it, just the parade route. I’m hoping the stage will face the Mall rather than back towards 7th St since there’s a lot more room that direction. I think the powers that be are underestimating the crowd size.

Haven't seen anything on that either as of yet.The Skins got a little over 500k the last time around so I would think at least half that is a good start but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them come really close to that number.

I plan on being there a little after 8am with little to no plan as to where we'll be,just gonna wing it and it soak it all in as it comes.

That was my assumption, at least.  I saw something about optimal viewing being between 7th and 17th Streets, but I don't know if that was the parade or the rally.  The road closures have Independence closed going back toward 17th too.  It seems like the only reason to do that would be due to rally crowds, as it is off the parade route.

When the Royals won the Series in 2015, it broke a 30-year title drought.  After the last out was recorded, so many people across the metro shot off fireworks, it showed up on the National Weather Service radar as possible storm activity.

Within minutes, hundreds of people were lined up around the sporting goods store down the street from my house to be the firs people to buy World Series Champions merchandise.  It was a victory party - people had brought line beers, the wave broke out, sing-alongs, all patiently waiting for the store’s computers to reboot and start selling stuff.

The clinching game was in New York, so there were thousands waiting for the team at the airport.  And the team hit the town.  Heard second hand at one bar Hosmer hit, he paid for the house’s bar tab because he would rather shake hands and take photos with fans than have them offer to buy him drinks.

The parade and rally was on a Tuesday.  So many teachers and school staff called in sick to go to the parade, pretty much all the schools in the metro just cancelled classes.  The crush of fans coming downtown for the parade overwhelmed traffic patterns so much, people were pulling over on the freeway, getting out of heir cars, and walking the last couple miles to the parade route and rally site.

The population of KCMO proper (not including suburbs) is about half a million.  Crowd estimates for the parade and rally range from 700K to a full million.  It was like the entire city stopped for a day to celebrate.

Here’s a good Deadspin article covering the parade with great photos capturing just how many damn people were there.

The Royals were coming off a season where they got to Game 7 of the World Series, and they played an exciting, unconventional style that took big fielding and base running risks, so they were fun to watch.  So the games drew big TV ratings and merch was flying off the shelves for a year.  And the commemorative home jerseys the next season with gold numbers and trim accenting the blue and white were huge sellers; the team was supposed to wear them just once, but ended up making them a Friday home jersey all season.

Is it easy to get tickets for a White House tour?
Takes some lead time.  Usually need to request them 2-3 months in advance.  If you’re planning that far ahead it shouldn’t be a problem. There is a cutoff for requests (21 or 30 days in advance) because every guest has to be vetted.

Make sure EVERYTHING on the request form is accurate.  On our tour day, we saw families get delayed for up to an hour because a common name instead of given name was on the request and didn’t exactly match the person’s ID at check in.

I think you can only get through your member of Congress now.  No one size fits all answer to how easy it is.  It is more a question of how many people from your district are already in the queue on the date(s) you are looking at.

I'm sending my wife for champagne and fried chicken on her way to the metro.  Find us at the rally!  We should stand out because we'll both be wearing red shirts and red hats.
Nice!  I'll be on the lookout.  I'll be the weirdo in a gray Stanley Cup champs shirt because ****'s was sold out of red.

Going to try meeting up with my wife after the parade at the rally.  Hoping they open Constitution to pedestrians once the parade passes, so I can get over there.

Someone show the crowd today to Sean Spicer and Kellyane Conway so they can see what 100's of thousands of people actually look like

Parade was great.  I got some good photos of the Cup.  Hope we have another one of those soon.

I think I have a second hand high from the rally.

Had a great time yesterday at the parade.Had no issues and the crowd did seem a bit larger than expected but it's really hard to tell being in the middle of all that.Did they ever release an official number yet?

Ready for the next parade following a back to back Cup run!
