The "other" Fantasy Magazines thread (1 Viewer)

Just got the Fanball magazine yesterday. Haven't had a chance to see if its decent or not, but it definately looks attractive. Full color, and a nice layout. I don't agree with some of the rankings(as with most magazines), but better then what i've seen out of both ESPN and NFL.com so far.

edit: oh and their mock draft is a joke.

i will always get FFIndex. I just like the writing. i don't always agree with the projections but i like some of the annual features.

i picked up The Sporting News FF mag at the grocery store last night....and laughed out loud when I saw they had Thomas Jones as a top 10 redraft pick.

i typically buy PFW's FF mag, but this year, i might pass jsut because FBG subscription has gotten so darn tootin' good, any magazine is pointless.

Draft Sharks.com, making some unique picks. I got burned too many times following Draftshark advice and once a majority of their info became subscription I never went back.
i used Draftsharks a few years ago. the first year the info was really solid....so i went back the following year. the following year, they were absolutely horrid, i think Lenny Pappano was sick with mono for a month going into the season which really hurt their effort and going into the season it never recovered.after that year, i came over to the fine folks at FBG and expect to stick around for a while.

I'm actually liking this magazine, not a bad read. Its called Fantasy Football Weekly by Fanball.com. It has Steve Smith on the cover.

I haven't heard any comments on Fantasy League Football (SA on the cover). I picked it up because none of the others were on the newstands yet and it seems to be ok -- decent projections, player analysis and team analysis. Of course, I may change my mind after doing some indepth reading. Any other opinions?

I picked up Fantasy Football Pro Forecast from Barnes and Noble last night (with Larry Johnson making his hand signal on the cover). Just in time for my 7 hour trek up to Traverse City to visit the inlaws. :)

What really caught my attention however was Amanda Beard on the cover of FHM magazine.

Just picked up my Fantasy Football Pro Forecast. :D

ESPN is doing their weekly FB show now. John Clayton just said they are going to do the QB ranking next.

AH, life is great.

Last year I bought the FBG mag & FantasyGuru mag, they were both very good so I plan on buying them both this year. Hopefully my competitin doesn't.
Guru a great mag! Will get it again this year. Should be out this week

I just picked up FF Pro Forecast this week too. They may want to tweak how they project TDs for players that miss significant time the year before. Most every projection I saw for players that scored 0 TDs in 2005 projects them to have 0 TDs in 2006. Some examples:

Ahman Green - 1261 total yds, 0 TDs

Javon Walker - 1345 receiving yds, 0 TDs

Michael Clayton - 1142 receiving yds, 0 TDs

The two that I always get (well, three now that FBG has a mag) are Index and Pro Forecast. I've found that they've always been pretty good reads (IIRC, Pro Forecast was where I first read an article about VBD, circa '97).

The guru is a solid mag but last year I felt they hyped Kevin Jones a little too much.

Just picked up FF Authority. Big fan of it, none of the typical regurgitated information found in the other rags. Solid analysis. Other than the FBG mag, its the only one I'll buy.

I've seen several  for the Fantasy Football Index magazine. I looked at Barnes & Noble and Books A Million, and while they had a ton of choices neither had FFI. Does anyone know if it's on the shelf yet? Or if not, when?

Based on past history, I expect it'll be on the newstands Wednesday...Thursday at the latest. It's the only one I buy. Miss Joe's OL article but glad FBG's participates in the magazine's expert contest.

I've been an avid reader of FF Index since 1990.

They've had public missteps a la Bell and Rod Smith, but as someone who has been an avid FFer since before these dang intranet days, I think they have a more than solid record. Longevity speaks volumes in this business.

And since we all fancy ourselves "sharks" in the hobby, we also tend to be fickle in turning on the so-called experts. God save Joe and Co. if they ever make a Tatum Bell-esque pick. This board might implode into a cyberspace black hole from the simultaneous collision of venemous attacks and fanboyish defenses.

I can't stand Fanball. Every player profile has to make asinine some pop-culture reference ("Larry Johnson's second half was hotter than Eva Longoria!!!!) or make some comment about Jake Plummer being gay. Ugh. I'd like fantasy football analysis, please. My time on the can is precious.
don't forget when "Joe & co" ranked Kevin Barlow as top 5 RB. even he makes fun of himself on that one. everyone "reaches" with thsoe predictions. I do like FBG mag. anf FF index

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the X-Pert Sports Fantasy mag.

On the outside it just looks flashy and cheesy (has pictures of fake cheerleaders on nearly every page including the cover)

It's got Bush on the cover in his USC jersey, and the whole thing is in color.

But inside it has some good insight into durability concerns about players.

I also like the projections which predict many games missed for Foster and Warner along with auction prices.

Problems include the fact that MCNair is not on the Ravens according to this mag, but I'm sure that's the case for most mags outside of FBGs.

So far I've read ESPN, X-pert sports, FBGs and FBGs is definitly the best. ESPN has some nice extras, but I don't like the rankings.

I've been through this year's Index and it's as good as ever. it was my favorite mag when i was starting out (early 90s) and continues to be.

I can't see a need to buy ANY magazine, even the FBG one.  What info is in the FBG magazine, let alone one of the others, that I can't find here with the internet subscription?

The magazine led me to this site, and after I found it, I gave the magazine away to a rookie draftor who could make better use of it.

No offense to FBG, because the magazine was wonderful, but I'm having a hard time justifying the purchase of ANY magazine with so much more (and more current) info available on the Internet!

(edited for spelling)
Unless I need a little material for the plane or takin' care of a little business in the bathroom, I've had a hard time justifying the $$$ to buy a magazine when it's outdated the nano-second it comes off the presses. If I were to buy any fantasy football magazines out there though, FBGs would be it! I just have a hard time paying money for anything in print that is also available online for a fraction of the price (or free)....updated on a daily basis. But that's just me.
This is why I've never looked into the magazines as well - I prefer the currency of info in the 'net. And I don't need :toilet: reading material -- that's a guy thing. :D

As a long-time FF player, I appreciate FF Index's 20-year anniversary section this year. Nice to see historical perspective in what is a pretty ephemeral "sport."

Fantasy Football Index is the Cadillac of fantasy mags.

I always buy 3 to compare and contrast, but I trust FFI the most.

I did just buy the Fantasy Sports piece of trash because it was available, and let me tell you... it eats my ###. Never buying it again.
I was interested to see if they were going to aknowledge their Tatum Bell fiasco of last year. They did. I liked that. Take a risk and admit if they are wrong.I like Index because they list the IDP grouped together as starters with their stats from last year. Can be useful if you're sitting there at the draft flipping through pages.

I also always get Index and Pro Forecast. I don't think I'll ever buy the FBG mag. As a subscriber to the website, it would seem to be putting too many eggs in the same basket to pick up the FBG magazine.

Plus their past reputation is all they've got to hang their helmet on imho....

It is due out on July 1, but I have not seen it yet. I ordered it online for the newsstand price, no tax and the shipping is included. FantasyIndex.com

Just bought Fanball's as theirs looked like the best of the ones avail that had any substantial auction draft info (hint for 2007). FFI and FBG mag weren't there, nor was huddle's.

I think FFI is the best out there. Ian Allan's a heckuva writer. Their 20th anniversary issue (got it in the mail already) has a lot of cool extra stuff. I couldn't agree more on the cheesiness of Fanball, as described above. It's torturous to listen to someone who thinks they're funny but really isn't. And they never stop with the sthick - it's like watching a really bad episode of Sports Center.

I think that the FFI is a good magazine. Others on the shelf look very similar to it and I don't think that is any accident.

Have been a fan myself but disagree on the last part. I buy a mag based on how good it appears to be THAT year. I really don't care much (if at all) how it was in past years.

Maybe that's because we're calling it like we see it. If some "experts" make what IMO is a bad/highly questionable pick or ranking, why walk on eggshells?

I agree but didn't get the impression they were all that bad about it. TSN was though.

FF Pro Forecast and FF Draft Book are great, as is FFIndex. Yeah that Fanball sex/bathroom humor is not needed. 'He scored more than Tommy Lee blah blah'

Check out the "Sleepers & Busts" section in F.F. Index.

Some of their sleepers:

- Edgerrin James

- Peyton Manning

- Ronnie Brown

- Reggie Bush

- Joey Galloway

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

C'mon... if you are going to use the term "sleeper" in the headline, at least name an ACTUAL sleeper. Otherwise, change the title to "Guys We Feel Will Outperform Even the Highest of High Draft Positions."

Edge and Manning aside, I think I'm actually more offended that they are pimping Galloway. What they should have said was: "Last year, Galloway had by far his best season since 1998... we think he's going to stay effective, even though every fantasy player in the world is aware of how good he was in 2005."

i was traveling to every store in town every day for the past 3 days waiting for FF Index to come in.

finally, Borders had it on their shelf today!

my FF Season just started! I know it always has a few bad projections, but I enjoy the writing.

I just picked up my copy of FFIndex last night, and not only is it the best fantasy mag this year, it's the best I've ever seen. Their 20 Anniversary features are money.

I was determined not to buy any fantasy mags this year. I wanted to do the regular TSN NFL Preview and FG On line and that would be it.

However, being a weak soul, I bought the Index for the 16th straight year. I like it because they give me something to think about when I read it. I crossed out the "experts rankings" to remind me not to look at them. This is the kind of crap that talked me out of Carson Palmer last season. Rather, I will make time to READ the text to look for angles I have not thought of.

Forecast also does a nice job of this- I noticed in there that Julius Jones has averaged 3.0 ypc in 2 TE sets. Good info- but it is up to ME to determine if this is important.

The Index ranking Bell and Rod Smith so high last year to me is a positive. I didn't go with it, but it gave me something to think about. That's why the other rags stink.

What does that mean? Magazines need inaccurate projections to make you think? Other mags didn't rate anyone high/low so they didn't give you anything to think about? Note: I like FF Index and will buy it when I see it on the news stand. Just trying to figure out what it is that makes the other mags stink.

Most other mags simply regurgitate last year's final statistics and present them as forecast for this year. FFI goes out on limbs more often. And yes, sometimes they whiff big time on guys (Bell, Rod Smith, Santana Moss a few years ago) but even they aren't above reproach. There's a section in this year's FFI dedicated to bad projections, and they poke fun of themselves for those.

Just read that FFI will be on the stands July 11-14. This has been the only magazine i read. You cant do everything in front of a monitor, can you? I think the FFI reads easy, has great stat pages for reference and throws their own twist on things. I havn't been to the store to look at FBG's version, does it provide any more or less information than FFI?

FFI delivered to my home last Saturday, July 1. FFI and FBG are my two sources and both are waiting for me. Training camp must be getting close.

Best check again on FFI. Went to B & N after lunch today to see if I could find that rag TO wrote and glanced at the mags and saw 1 sitting there, so snatched it up quick like. Don't know if it was another TO blunder but it was on the shelf.

They didn't have the book by the way...

It's a book, rather than a magazine, but has anyone bought/used the Pro Football Prospectus in the past? If so, what were your impressions? The advertising spiel is intriguing--separating RB performance from offensive line performance, for example.

I've read the baseball version and enjoyed it (I'm just a baseball stat geek, not a fantasy baseball player). I wonder if football can be analyzed statistically to the depth baseball can, though.
