The Portis Strategy (1 Viewer)

Drafted from the 1-hole and got him at 4.10 (40th overall) in a 10-team Yahoo public. Kinda felt bad drafting against a league where there were surely some guppies mixed in. I chose to back up LT first. Betts was gone by the time I was ready to take him. He was gone just before the Kitna pick...

1. (1) LaDainian Tomlinson RB

2. (20) Steve Smith WR

3. (21) Marvin Harrison WR

4. (40) Clinton Portis RB

5. (41) Edgerrin James RB

6. (60) Ahman Green RB

7. (61) Michael Turner RB

8. (80) Santonio Holmes WR

9. (81) Jon Kitna QB

10. (100) Matt Leinart QB

11. (101) Isaac Bruce WR

12. (120) Jacksonville DEF

13. (121) Owen Daniels TE

14. (140) Matt Stover K

15. (141) Chris Henry WR

12 team league, very heavy QB scoring, drafting from the #9 hole:

Parker

Brees

Fitz

Portis

Peterson

Vince Jackson

Betts

Freddy Taylor

Santonio Holmes

Vernon Davis

Mike Furrey

etc.

Went very RB heavy mostly because guys with great value kept sliding to me. I paid a price in the WR/TE area, but if Holmes, Davis, Furrey, or James Jones booms I'm feeling golden.

12 team, 2nd pick. 1qb, 2rb, 3wr, 1flex, 1K, 1D ( 4pts passing, 1 ppr )

rb- sjax (1st)

rb- Portis (3rd)

wr- r. williams (2nd)

wr- b. edwards ( 5th)

wr- c. johnson ( 6th )

flex- a. peterson ( 4th )

qb- Delhomme ( 10th )

D- steelers ( 13th )

k- akers ( 15th )

bench

rb- j. jones ( 7th )

rb- c. taylor ( 9th )

wr- s. holmes ( 8th )

wr- dj hackett (11th )

qb- a. smith ( 12th )

qb- c-pep ( 14th )

Ok, Week one with Portis in two leagues. In league A, Ahman Green will be starting for him, in the other Caddy - two solid starts (esp. green) with Portis' upside there if he shows it's there.

Curious to see how the different Portis approaches work. Betts vs. no betts. Other RBs. Depending upon where you got portis (2nd-5th round)

I'll be starting Portis in every league i have him in week #1. He's starting and as long as he doesn't have set backs he'll get enough touches to put up decent numbers.

If i had a great #3 back i might use the wait and see approach, but there aren't many backs out of the top 10 i'd start over him this week.

Prediction:

18 carries/87 yards/1 TD

3 rec/28 yards/0 TD's

Not mind blowing, but pretty solid.

Crap. Last draft is tonight, and I'm in the 1-spot...I just don't know if I have the stomach to pass on him at 3.01.

You shouldn't. LT + Portis could lock down the championship if your other drafting is at all competent.

10 team shark infested draft last night. Drafting from the 8 hole. 6TD .02pass .05rush/rec

Plan was Rb/Rb, but......

LT2, SJax, Gore  , Alexander, Addai, LJ  , Parker, Henry, Rudi, Payton, Bush, Maroney

Maroney was my target. I'm not high on Westbrook in this format, so I adjusted for the Portis strategy and it worked out golden.

1.08 T.Henry

2.03 Palmer

3.08 Gates

4.03 Portis

5.08 Plax

6.03 Caddy

7.08 Branch

8.03 S.Holmes

9.08 Vinetieri

10.03 Eli

11.08 Betts (handcuff)

12.03 B.Watson

13.08 Stover

14.03 K.Curtis

15.08 B.Stokley

Starting set

Palmer

Henry, Portis

Burress, Branch

Gates

Vinetieri

:lmao:

I see it being the difference between drafting LT/TO/Roy/Peterson or LT/TO/Portis/Evans. I think I feel better about option B. Of course, there's the tempting potential of getting LT/TO/Roy/Portis...

Gotta be careful there. I wouldn't be surprised to Peterson gone on your next turn. He has been going earlier and earlier in evefry draft I've had.

10 team league. Evans' current ADP is 39. If not, I'll take Driver.

http://subscribers.footballguys.com/apps/adp.php
I took Portis at 4.06 last night. My first four went FWP, Chad, Fitzgerald, Portis. I had hoped to get Betts in 8, but he went at 7.08. At the time, I thought it was crazy, but the ADP link you have above has him all over the place... as high as 58 (4.10!), and as low as 90 something. There is clearly no agreement on where to draft him.

That said, I am happy with how it worked out. Maybe I can move some WR depth for Betts, if the need arises.

So, I took the risk and let him slide at 3.01...and no, you cannot join my league! :hophead: 1.01 LaDainian Tomlinson

2.10 Chad Johnson

3.01 Marvin Harrison

4.10 Clinton Portis

5.01 Adrian Peterson

6.10 Santana Moss

I was not thrilled about the Portis Strategy, but that is kind of how the draft fell. PPR, 6pts all TD's, start 1/2/2/1, no flex-12 team, 8 spot

1.08 Westbrook

2.05 S. Smith

3.08 Portis

4.05 Brady

5.08 A. Green

6.05 Calvin Johnson

7.08 B. Edwards

8.05 T. Bell

9.05 J. Witten

Going with Ahman vs KC, will wait and see how Portis plays. Also going to wait on Calvin.

I drafted at spot 10 in a 10 team league and here was my solution to your problem.

I took Henry and McGahee in the first and 2nd round.

I then traded up in the 3rd and grabbed Holt. He was the last elite WR left (Smith, CJ, Fitz, TO and Marvin were already gone) and the injury news was just starting to come out on him. By the time my original pick had rolled around in the 3rd, Wayne, Williams, Walker and Housh were gone too. I'd have ended up with Boldin, AJ or Colston. I thought it was a gamble worth taking.

Time will tell.

I'm heading into my 12-team redraft (non-IDP; non-PPR) in about an hour, and I'm picking from the 1.05 spot. I'm hoping to get him at 3.05 (29th overall), but I've got my doubts. He's frankly an ideal pick for any of the first four guys to grab in the 3rd round, and this league is pretty knowledgeable about fantasy football overall.

To set this up, unless someone nabs Portis before my 2.08 pick, I'm definitely going to grab the best available QB, WR or TE. Manning won't be there but I'm hoping for Palmer or Gates. If Portis is grabbed between my 2nd and 3rd picks, I'm going to pick the best available RB or WR (assuming Gates is off the board) at 3.05.

And yes, I will keep everyone posted. :goodposting:

12 team, PPR league, from the #8 hole:

1.08 Reggie Bush

2.05 Steve Smith

3.08 Terrell Owens

4.05 Clinton Portis :goodposting:

5.08 Laverneus Coles

6.05 Thomas Jones

7.08 Kellen Winslow

8.05 Ben Roethlisberger

9.08 Jerious Norwood

10.05 Brett Favre

11.08 Jerry Porter

12.05 Brandon Jackson

13.08 Seattle "D"

14.05 Kevin Jones

I don't see how Portis can be lasting into the 3rd round at this point. I got him late 2nd a few weeks back when there was still enough time that people thought he would be ready for the season, although there were certainly some doubts.

Since then, as the season got closer his ADP dropped to the 3-4th round (mostly) but with the news that he will start and apparantly shoulder a decent load from the get go, how he would go past the last 2-3 picks of the second, I am not sure.

14 team redraft I was in the 8 hole. I had pretty much resigned myself to Manning in the first round based on the mocks I had run. I just didn't like the results when taking RB, RB in the first two rounds, my normal strategy. So Manning did fall to me and I pondered for a moment, then pulled the trigger. RB kept falling off the board and when it got back to me I was in the Portis zone. I took him at 2.07 as the best available RB. I could have picked a pretty good WR but I felt I needed a better RB than the next round would yield. As you can see, buy the next round I had to grab AP.

Pick Pos Player Overall

01.08 QB1 Peyton Manning 8

02.07 RB13 Clinton Portis 21

03.08 RB15 Adrian Peterson 36

04.07 WR14 Lee Evans 49

05.08 WR19 Calvin Johnson 64

06.07 RB28 Marion Barber III 77

07.08 DEF3 New England 92

09.08 WR33 D.J. Hackett 120

10.07 TE9 Ben Watson 133

11.08 PK3 Jason Elam 148

12.07 QB28 Joey Harrington 161

13.08 WR49 Demetrius Williams 176

14.07 TE17 Desmond Clark 189

15.08 PK20 Lawrence Tynes 204

Surprised to hear you won't take CP at 2.08, unless you're just posting it to throw others off that might read this and are in your league. :lmao:
