The Real Fanball Story (1 Viewer)

Ok, I'm a person close to the situation at Fanball / FUN. I came across this post today and I can't believe it.

1) If you read closely, you'll notice that people complain about fanball.com going down the tubes for years. Not in the past 2 days, which is when the Fanball guys got let go. Not even the past 365 days, which is the time that CDM was acquired by Fun Tech. Sounds like it was Fanball's fault, not anyone else's.

2) I challenge someone to go try out one of cdm's games. Don't even spend money, just try a free one. You'll find it's well designed and maintained. If you don't want to, fine, but don't run off because some guy's mad.

To wrap it up, the kid that posted that was just mad that he lost his job. You can see his dramatic portrayal of the situation going on in his post. Some people were incompetent at their job, they got laid off. It's simple as that. I'd be mad too if I got laid off, but I'd man up and realize it was my fault, not someone else's.

Disclaimer: I don't have any interests in FUN / CDM / Fanball. I just happen to know in detail what's going on there.

I'll try to check on here sometime in the next few days if anybody has any questions. Hopefully Vikingsrock doesn't get all ignorant in here. I have a good feeling he's going to troll a bit.

I like Fanball content alot, and the personalities there. Not sure about their gaming applications. Did you create an alias just to post this? Hard to believe you are not a CDM company man/person, given the content of your posting.

That's fair - to be honest I've never used fanball or CDM's software. I've tried a number of different league management packages though, and I'm pretty happy with MFL.

So you're saying everyone at Fanball, what formerly was a well thought of site, were really incompetent at their jobs? I find that hard to believe. People are let go due to incompetency, departments are totally shut down for other reasons. You can call it a business decision, which I'm sure it is, but don't lay the blame on the Fanball guys who in the past had put out a pretty good product. On another note: It would be impossible to know in detail what is going on at CDM/Fanball without having some interest in the company. Just impossible.

Honestly, I don't go to sport forums that often. I did just create my username to shed some light on all of this. A friend sent me the link to the post. I don't have anything bad to say about anybody within Fanball. From what I hear, the Fanball writers are pretty good guys. The facts remain that the technical guys got fired because their bosses thought they weren't doing a good job. Not much to it.

The original post provided some good information and didn't seem too biased (especially considering the guy just lost his job). Your post seems like a biased attempt from FUN Tech to smear him. I'll take his word over yours. To call someone incompetent because they got laid off is really ignorant. Plenty of competent people get laid off all the time because of things outside their control.

If you know more details as you claim, why don't you share them?

I thought according to the post that everyone got fired?

I relate to job loss -- I just resigned today :lmao: but you should not suggest everyone that lost their jobs are incompetent, unless it was one person. Because if it is a massive layoff, theres no way its due to incompetency.

From what you hear? How do you know ANYTHING about Fanball if you don't READ Fanball?Their content is much more accurate (see Rotoworld) and insightful (than any of the biggies like CBSSL or Y!) and useful (PFS, FFToday...) than most anything out there. The writing was entertaining and podcasts quite good (about the only other one I listen to besides FBG Lamy and Bloom).

My experience with the site was this; since june/july of 2006 their content, site, and games went down the tube. They went very cookie cutter and did not distiguish themselves from every other free site on the web. I did not renew my subscription based on that opinion. I didnt know about the coprporate entity switching but it was obvious to me then and now that cost cutting and main stream appeal was far more a goal than the previous regimes goals. That being said coprorate take overs happen all the time and jobs get lost in the cost cutting, i could really care less i dropped the site from my list of things to check out.

Switz,I've used Fanball Commissioner for 4 years and 3 different leagues but will also admit to having not much experience with other management software to which to compare. However, I'm a programmer and what the acquirers inherited may not have been improved but was also amazing in it's oddities before they got it.

E.g. just discovered this year, Scoring override: one can't set a score to zero. Just won't take it. Support apologized and suggested I use 1 or -1. Now, a system that can't support all the numbers -- that's just bad design. It's all over the place there.

I know nothing about the parties and have nothing but a customers affiliation and I see NO reason to suspect that a replacement of the technology will not, in fact, end up being an improvement.

1) It may have been after the acquisition, but it wasn't because of the malicious people at CDM. That was my point. He was trying to say that CDM ruined them. If CDM was to fault, Fanball would have made a downturn a year ago (when CDM was acquired) not 2 years ago (roughly when Fanball was acquired, not sure though).2) From what I hear MFL is the doing great in the fantasy sports arena. If you like them, great. I'll recommend them to my friends.

3) I don't know jack about how good they were previously. I'm talking about now. Maybe the really good people left after the acquisition and the bottom of the barrel was all that was left. I don't know.

To clarify, Fanball isn't being shut down. From what I know, all the good people have been offered to keep their jobs. So it's not really a "business decision" as it is more of cleaning house of a lot of dead weight.

If you have 20 employees. Over time, you end up with 10 of them as not really working out. None of them are horrible, just not productive. Dead weight. So what you do is, make it look like it's some restructuring to get rid of the dead weight. "Shut down" the company, but you end up offering jobs to the good 10 employees. Not a business decision, just clearing the dead weight. Make sense?

Let's say I did some consulting work for them a while back. I still keep in touch, but if CDM was shut down tomorrow. It wouldn't hurt or help me at all. That's a situation in which I could know what's going on, yet have no vested interest. Agree?

Do note that the entire place isn't being laid off, just the ones they thought were dead weight. It's not a business decision, they are clearing house.

Spare us the lecture on businesses and how they survive. It seems like you don't have any idea what is going on. Your comments are purely subjective (and don't even seem to be first-hand) and are designed to badmouth the employees there.

Sounds like you are the guy who had his nose so far up management's ### that you were able to keep your job while everyone else got canned. For example:

Your boss: "Hey Curly, I was at FBG today and I saw Larry saying he got fired and that fanball sucks. Can you take care of that?"

You: "Yeah sure. Can I get your dry cleaning and teach your son how to play the piano on Saturday? I have all kinds of time."

Your boss: "No my son doesn't associate himself with folks of your economic variety."

You: "Gee, that's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me."

20 minutes later you're telling us some crappy story making excuses. :goodposting:

That or....you are trying to get on staff. We already have MOP here guy. Move along.

Regardless of what the OP says(Feels to me he is a CDM employee trying to do some sort of damage control), our two leagues will be moving from Fanball next season. Does anyone have an suggestions of new services? What is MFL?

One of the better :goodposting: trips I've seen in awhile.

You challenge us to try a CDM game (or whatever the hell it is), but in your words you have no interest.....

This really belongs in the FFA. Along with the other load of crap that resides there.

I'm not sure I buy that. Laying off incompetent people is usually done one at a time as they demonstrate their incompetence. I'm an employer; I know. This is what the guy said:
In the end, CDM somehow convinced FUN that the Fanball product was not as good as theirs, so the idiots at FUN are closing the Minneapolis office, laying off all of the writers and technology staff.
According to that, the entire office was laid off. Sorry, but they didn't all become incompetent at once, your stated reason they were laid off doesn't pass the sniff test. I don't use fanball, don't have a dog in this fight. But BS sounds like BS.

Actually, his information was useful. The bottom line is don't use fanball next year, I'm glad he brought it to my attention. Some people had already figured this out over the last year or so, his post will help others."They missed deadlines" Those are quite the details you have there.

Regardless of what the OP says(Feels to me he is a CDM employee trying to do some sort of damage control), our two leagues will be moving from Fanball next season. Does anyone have an suggestions of new services? What is MFL?
MFL is myfantasyleague.comIt's generally good for regular leagues and really good if you want to do a lot of customization for league settings and the league page.I haven't used in in a few years so others will be able to give you more detail. I use yahoo plus for my leagues because they are pretty vanilla redraft leagues, the interface is very easy for newcomers and I really don't care that it costs more.

Feels to me he is a CDM employee trying to do some sort of damage control
Quite possible. I don't know. Probably not the best start to say "Try a CDM game....but I have no interest in CDM/Fanball/whatever". If you're going to deceive people already.....I think by and large the fanball community realized it was heading down the tubes. i even think they need to get away from the name Fanball entirely (because of how far it fell). Maybe they are, I have no knowledge of that.

Sorry but closing this. This is not Shark Pool material. And I'm really not sure there is any forum on the site where I want "this company rules" vs "this company sucks" type threads.

Charlie Wiegert of CDM has been a friend of mine for a long time. Paul Charchain that put Fanball where it was before they sold to FUN is also a longtime friend. I have respect for both guys and both companies.

I had no idea that Fanball was ever bought or sold -- all I know is that it started to suck about 2 years ago. I used to check Fanball for football information religiously -- Fanball, KFFL, Rotoworld, Footballguys. Religiously. Then Fanball started to suck -- less information, less entertainment. I haven't gone back since.
